A distinguished Methodist Minister and
prominent Temperance Lecturer once re
marked that go where he would, froth one
end of the country to the other, he hardly
ever failed to find Plantation Bittkrs,
and while he condemned the practice of
using these Bitters too freely, he could not
conscientiously say that he would discard
them from the side-board, for he had him
self experienced beneficial results from their
use, and that, from a long and close obser
vation, he was convinced that when used
moderately, and as a medicine exclusively,
they were all that was recommended. At
the same time he warned his hearers not to
pull the cork too often, for they were iar
too pleasant a tonic to trifle with.

The Coming Cotton Crop.— The Jack
son (Miss.) Clarion , noticing the specula
i tions of Northern papers In regard to the
coming cotton crop, sayfc:
“ It will be observed that speculators, or
writers in their interest, have commenced
the old game of predicting a large increase
in the supply of the staple We are told
that the price is stimulating production,
and that a considerable addition will be
made to the acreage heretofore (since the
war) employed in its cuitufe. Consequent
ly, wiseacres are already predicting that
the next crop will reach 3,000,000 bales—
probably 3,500,000 !• This originates solely
in the imaginations of the writers. The
breadth of land devoted co cotton tills sea
son will not exceed that of last year. We
certain that it will not equal it. It is
the experience of almost every planter that
fewer laborers are engaged in its produc
tion than were thus employed last year.—
Tim remunerative prices of cotton last
season left a large number of frepdmen
with means at its close to set up for them
selves after a fashion. This they have done,
with insufficient teams and tools, and un
der circumstances generally not-favorable

to large crops of cotton which, moreover,
they are not ambitious to raise. Be
sides, since 1865, the crop prospects at this
period of the season, have not been so un
favorable as at the present season, in the
section whence the supply is mainly drawn.
Tlie excessive rains have damaged them
immensely. When they commenced falling,
two weeks ago, in consequence of the pre
vious inclement weather, many planters had
not bttt their seed In the gronnd. And in
the instances where they had come up, the
young plant has been killed, or washed
away by the flood. Consequently it may
be said, that now in the early part of May,
the time wjieu ordinary cotton receives its
first working, it lias yet to be planted.—
Owing to the Wet weather two weeks of the
most valuable time to planters have been
entirely lost. The crop has been thrown
back at least three weeks. And everybody
knows how Important time is in saving the
drhfrfrom the• ravages of the insect. To
make matters worse, there Is a great
scarcity of seed in the country; and many
planters who have jost their stands will
find it difficult to obtain another supply.—
From this data It will be seen how stupidly
absurd and unreasonable is the prediction
that the next crop will exceed the produc
tion of last year. The present prospects
compel the belief that is will be vastly
diminished.

Savannah, Skidaway and SfaWSard
Railroad. —A meeting of the stockholders
of the Savannah, Skidaway and Seaboard
.Railroad was held at the Exchange Long-
Room yesterday. At the election of direc
tors to control the affairs of the Road for
the ensuing year, there were 863 shares of
stock represented out of 1,176 stockholders.
The gentlemen who were elected as direc
tors are Joseph S. Clagliorn, George W.
Wylly, Octavus Cohen and J. W. Latlirop
(members of the old board), Henry Brigham,
C. IT. Way, A. J. Brady, A. M. Sloan and
Thomas M. Norwood. Col. W. R. Symons
declined a re-election as director. There- -
port of the present energetic President,
together with those of the Treasurer and
Engineer, were read. The reports show the
road to be in a highly flourishing condition,
with every prospect of its completion to
the Isle of Hope by the first, of July or
thereabout. The ten gentlemen who re
cently subscribed $5,000 each towards the
construction of the road have paid $25,000
for iron, chairs and spikes sufficient to
complete the work to the Isle of Hope, and
a sufficiency of passenger coaches have
already been ordered, which will be In
readiness by the time the road is finished
to that point.— Savannah Advertiser.
Death of an Old Citizen. —lt is with
deep regret that we announce the death of
Mr. David Bell. He .died at .Louisville a
dav or two since, and was there buried.
Mr. Beil was 93 years of age at the time
of his death, and during hia ion" life has
enjoyed the respect and love of ail who
have known him. He was one of the
first members of the Savannah Volunteer
Guards, and appeared in the ranks when
ever the company paraded until a few years
ai?o, when the feebleness of age prevented.
Ilis dying request was that the guards
should bury him. He came from Ireland to
Savannah in 1790—then being fourteen
years of age. Peace to his ashes.

Universalist Preacher. —Dr. L F. W.
Andrews, long a Georgia editor in Macon,
Americas, and elsewhere, recently honored
by Governor Bullock as guano inspector,
has turned Universalist preacher, and is
traveling out West under the banner of
that branch of the church militant. We
can sympathize with the Doctor in his faith
to some extent. For country editors there
surely ought not to be any future punish
ment ; tltey get a plenty on this earth. On
the other hand, however, if there’s no hell
for delinquent subscribers, there ought to
be. So on striking a balance, we conclude
to stick to the orthodox theory, that there
is not only a hell hereafter, but the hottest
kind of one for all the workers of iniquity
who die without repeating. —Griffin Star.
Large Haul of Rock Fisn.—A corres

feet in length. There were twenty-five fish
th it would average twenty-five pounds each,
besides a large number weighing from five
to ten pounds each.

To Jas. Ruddle tt Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gentlemen : This Is to certify that 1 have been
for yean a sufferer, and have tried all the Tonics I
havehe*rdof or seen advertised, with littlM>r«o re
lief from any of them. I heard your Hurley Bitters
highly spoken of, and tried a bottle, with little faith
in it before I commenced, and to rny surprise mid
joy, before 1 finished one bottle, I felt a great deal
better, and firmly believe that on one or two occasion*
it was tbe means of saving and prolonging my life. I
conscientiously recommend them to aM sufferers as
the best Bitters known, and advise ttiem always to ask
for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and have no other. You can
use this as you think proper, if it will benefit others.
Yours, truly, &c.,
JOHN W. DIXON.
