A distinguished Methodist Minister and
prominent Temperance Lecturer once re
marked that go where lie would; from one
.end of the country to the other, he hardly
ever failed to find Plantation Bitters,
and while lie condemned the practice of
using these Bitters too freely, he could not
conscientiously say that he would discard
them from the side-board, for he had him
self experienced beneficial results from their
use, and that, from a long and close obser
vation, he was convinced that when used
moderately, and as a medicine exclusively,
they were all that was recommended. At
the same time he warned his hearers not to
pull the cork too often, for they were far
too pleasant a tonic to trifle with.

There are supposed to be 40,000 Christians
in Japan, who have to practice their reli

crucified or decapitated. Sometimes twen

and then drowned, like kittens, with stones
around their necks. All attempts at con
version are strictly forbidden by treaty,
and salvation of the soul has been followed
by so disagreeable consequences to the
body, of late, that the missionaries think it
more merciful to refuse instruction than to
give it.

Bad on Cotton. —We are having anoth
er season of uncommonly cool nights for
May, and the unhealthy appearance of cot
ton on sandy lands continues. Indeed the
young plants droop and wilt more and
more, and the indications are at this time
very discouraging. We know of one plant
er in the immediate vicinity of Columbus
who has stopped work in a field of about
thirty acres of cotton, determined to wait
and see whether half a “stand” will sur
vive this weather and the present sickly
condition of the crop, before he spends any
more labor on it. If the dying out of the
plant continues, he will plow up the cotton
and plant corn instead. We presume that
quite a number of planters, though they
have not actually suspended working their
cotton, are equally uncertain whether the
“ stand ” that is to be left them will pay
the expense of cultivation.

WnAT the Young Men are Doing.—
An exchange- says: ‘“What are all the
youijg men in our country doing ? There
are none anywhere learning trades.’ They
are all playing ball, or learning to ride on
velocipedes.” •
Some of onr young men are driving the
plow. We know some who own broad cot
ton fields, and have bank accounts, who
regard It no disgrace to walk the furrow
and turn row for row with their hired freed
men; and, to their credit be it said, there
are very few in Dougherty following idle
ness for a livelihood.. Loafers have a hard
time in Albany, for the working man alone
is respected, and society requires all its
members to assist in supplying the means
of subsistence and social enjoyment.

Ma.rriei> His Mother-in-Law.—A case
Is going the rounds of the newspipers of a
man who married his mother. This is hor
rible enough ; but only suppose it had been
his mother-in-law ! —Chicago Times.
To this, the Detroit Free Press makes an
swer:
“ Horrible ” as it may seem, there is such
a case at Lansing, in this State, where a
man wedlocked and has, for several years,
been living witli his mother-in-law—the
daughter, his wife, Mkving died—and, arido
from wearing the look of a “ hen-pecked ”
Benedict,-he seems happy and contented.
Human nature is mighty eccentric in some
localities.
TnAT Monster Fisn.—Mr. W. R. Bunk
ley, keeper of the Light House on Little
Cumberland Island, informs us that he saw
the monster fish spoken of some time ago
by the Charleston papers. He says it would
measure twenty-five leet in length, sixteen
feet in width, fourteen feet over water, and
describes it as covered with dark skin, re
sembling India rubber, the feet or flipper of
a yellow cast. Mr. B. thinks the tide and
wiud pressed it up Dover river, and is on
the lookout with a view of securing the
prize of SI,OOO that has been offered for its
capture.— Bimnswick Appeal, 14/A

To Jas. Ruddle and Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gentlemen: This is to certify that I have been
for years a sufferer, and have tried all the Tonics I
have heard of or seen advertised, with little or no re
lief from any of them. I heard vonr Hurley Bitters
highly spoken of, and tried a bottle, with little fait h
in it before I commenced, and to my surprise and
idy, before I finished one bottle, I felt a great deal
better, and firmly believe that on one or two occasions
it Was the means of saving and proiongirg my lite. I
conscientiously recommend them to ad suflerers as
the best Bitters known, and advise them always to ask
for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and liave no oilier. You can
übc tliis as you think proper, if it will benefit others.
Yours, truly, Ac.,
