pains, and thy Plantation Bitters gave
me health, likened only unto the vigor of
youth. And upon such as are afflicted
with liver complaint, with sour stomach,
with general debility and dyspeptic pains,
in all parts of the land, did these Bitters
produce astonishing cures.

The Fisrhielto, of Turin, caricatures the
elections in France by representing Napo
leon and the Prince Imperial seated in the
Chariot of Blate, driven on a rough road
by Liberty, and drawn by three horses
(Legitimists, Orieanists, Republicans) and
and a mule (Clericalism.) The latter lias
stumbled and is being trodden under loot
by the three horses. Napoleon appears to
lie sadly frightened, and with one hand
nervously grasps the seat, while the other
is holding the Imperial Crowii upon his
son’s head. Motto—“ The road is rough ;
either let Liberty take the reins.or risk be
ing upset.”
The Paris corrcspondet of the London
Daily News mentions that by way of pre
caution the guard at the Tuileries has been
increased by 500 men, who sleep fully ac

close at hand. The troops, too, have been
kept to their barracks.
The Illustration, of Paris, publishes an
engraving of a gr'eat spreading tree-near
Cairo, under which, according to tradition*
Joseph and Mary and the infant Jesus took
shelter during the flight into Egypt. The
tree, whiqji stands on ground belonging to
the Isthmus of Suez Canal Company, was
marked to be ent down, but the Empress
Euarene has purchased it standing, and uow
pays a keeper to watch it.
A letter from Turkey says that some time

“The Fourth Duke of TJiorndale’s dead
—very sad thing—only two nights ago,”
said an enthusiastic short-horn breeder to
a quiet neighbor On the London Corn Ex
change. “ Dear me!—l never, heard of
him—l hope the nvxt-man’s a conserva
tive,” was the response, and its uttcrer was
rather disgusted with the explanation that
the deceased peer was only a dark roan
bull. ■
This is what the Etiglisjt girls are to
wear at the races: Dress of mauve poult
de-eoie, with a long train, trimmed around
the bottom with a pinked-out flounce The

Cotton.— Speculators in cotton (says the
Memphis Appeal) are already busy predict
ing the extent of the next crop ; and, like
all of their kindred are “ going it bliud”
with a perfect looseness. In the face of
tacts that are every day coming to light,
proving that there is not so great a breadth
ol' land under cultivation this as last year,
and tiiat not more lliau one-fourth, the num
ber of hands employed in 18158 are now en
gaged in agricultural labor of any kind,
these fellows continue to write foolish and
ridiculous letters about a 3,000,000 bale
crop, some of the more unreliable carrying
their figures as high as 3,500,000. It is
nothing to these wise acres that the bottom
land* have been inundated apd the hill sides
been washed by heavy rains, compelling,»in
most instances, replowing, aml» [replant
ing. If the ground is not ready and fertile,
their imaginations are ; and to prove it,
they make figures to order and beyond the
hopes, anticipations, or conceptions of the
poor planters who have digged and delved,
at cotton planting all their lives. These
persons are also oblivioifs to the existence
of press and telegraph. They anticipate
the one, and.possess more information than
the other. In a word they are equal to any.
emergency of the season or their calling,
and will manufacture a crop as readily as
their compeers of the gold board would a
bogus dispatch to sustain a combination
against “government” or gold. But we,
can assure them their efforts will prove
abortive. The multiplicity of agricultural
publications at tlfc South, and the means
adopted by the daily press of these States,
to keep the world posted as to the cotton
prospects, supersedes the necessity of the
old-fashioned circular which it, lias long
since been found was too often the media of
erroneous views and ignorant speculations,
such as arc now gaining currency in regard
to the crop of this year. The planter and
the merchant arc thoroughly posted, and
will continue to depend upon the only re
liable avenues of public intelligence for in
formation as to the future of cotton, which,
from all quarters, we learn is anything but
as promising as at this time last year.
Personal.— Mr. Charles Morgan, the pur
chaser of the New Orleans, Opelousas and
Great Western Railroad, at the sum of two
millions and fifty thousand dollars, which
he is to extend to the river Sabine at a cost of
two millions of dollars more, is now a resi
dent of New York. He was born in Clin
ton, Conn., in 1795.. In early life he went
into business in New York, imported fruit
from the West Indies, auil finally enlarged
until he became a very extensive and weal
thy shipping merchant. lie was the founder
of the extensive “ Morgan Irou Works ” in
New York. He started the first steamship
line between New York and Charleston,
and the first from New Orleans to Texas.
He is a quiet business man, seeking no pub
lic position or notoriety, and Ims amassed a
great fortune by his own industry and busi
ness talent.
Maine Giants. —A Turner correspondent
of the Lewiston Jourrud says that a man
died recently iD that town of almost giant
proportions. He was,six feet four inches
high and weighed three hundred pounds.—
Ills name was J</hn Keene. He was buried
beside the rdraain* of his father, whose
name was John, wITo died at the same age
(80years), and he also leaves a son John,'
who is six feet six Inches in height. The
boanis of which his coflin was made were
sawed by himself from the same log which
furnished the boards for his father’s coffin
twenty-seven years ago. Tliere are few logs
of sufficient size to furnish’ whole boards for
such a coffin.
