FEIDAY MORNING, JULY 23,1869
Good Advice. —Let our possessions be
what they may—-marble palaces, broad
lands, magnificent plate, or caskets of “ pre
cious stones”—they all sink in the lpalance
against Heaven’s great boon, HEALTH,
acnd they cannot be enjoyed without it. —
And yet h<\w little is it valued, and how
carelessly preserved. The laws of nature
cannot be violated with impunity. Night
revelry, luxurious living, irregularity of
meals, and a disordered appetite, will
gradually destroy the power and activity
of the stomach. How many ladies and
gentlemen eat and drink disease at late
suppers, and arise in the morning with
headache, loss of appetite, feeling languid
and unrefreshed. There can l>e no medical
remedy that will turn lead into food, or
poisoned drinks into nutriment, but medi
cal science can assist nature, supply ex
hausted fluids, and to a great extent Correct
the effects of disease. In all cases such as
the above, we recommend Plantation
Bitters. You will* And them just the
.thing—at the same time a most delicious
tonic and appetizer.

Redness, Sunburn, Tan, Freckles, Blotch

ADDRESS.
By Hon. Henry W. Hilliard, LL. D., of
Augusta, Georgia.
BENEDICTION.
The last composition on the list was not
read, owing to a request from the father of
the young lg.dy, who, in principle, is op
posed to the practice. But it was pro
nounced publicly, by President Bonnell, to
be a choice production, and many express
ed great regret at being deprived of the
privilege of hearing it.
The other compositions were read with
fluency and grace, and, in point of literary
merit, rank fully as high as any we have
ever heard on a similar occasion. This
tflass has in no wise lowered the high
standard which has been erected in former
days by the graduates of this institution.
We congratulate the young ladies in that
they have sustained the well earned reputa
tion of their Alma Mater.

The address of Hon. Henry W. Hilliard
was one of the finest productions that we
have ever listened to. The distinguished
orator introduced his subject by relating
the well known anecdote of Galileo, who,
alter being compelled to rpcanfc the opin
ions he had so vigorously defended, ex
claimed, in a burst of indignation, “ And
still the world moves!” He spoke of the
immense progress which the world has
made in science and art, in social and po
litical economy, and opined that it is still
in its youth, and js destined to reach a far
greater stage of advancement than it has
ever vet attained.
Refering to the state of our country, he
spoke in an encouraging manner. The
usurpers who now hold sway over us can
not remain in power forever, but must dis
appear before the onward march of liberty,
like the fallen angels before the flaming
sword of Abdiei. He does not despair of
the republic, but hopes for relief, not from
consolidation or imperialism, but from a
return of those better days when the Con
stitution was (he extreme law of the land.
His concluding remarks to the graduating
class was appropriate and striking. He
advised them, if a suitor should scud to any
of them like Jacob of old, ten camels
loaded with precious gifts, they should
inquire after his character and intellect.
If satisfied as to these, he should be ac
cepted ; but if he were devoid of wealth and
were, found to be a worthy man, they should
say to him as did the maiden of Mespo
tamia;' “I wilp'go.”
But it is impossible to give anything like
a fair idea of this truly eloquent address;
It should have been heard to be appre
ciated. It was listened to with rapt atten
tion, was frequently applauded, and adds
another laurel to the already large chaplet
which adorns the brow of the distinguished
statesman.

A New Enemy op Cotton.— Col. J. W.
Booth, of the Winona (Mississippi) Demo
crat, gave us, yesterday, a rather graphic
description of anew and heretofore un
known enemy to cotton, which has appear
ed upon his plantation and others in Carroll
county. The monster is about the size of
a fire fly, but there the similarity ceases.
It has a small trunk like a young elephant,
and munches the cotton forms like a hungry
j— mule at a fodder stack. The Colonel, on
visiting his place the other day,
the invader in great force, and concluded
to catch a few of them to put in a bottle
and bring them to Memphis, but they were
not to be bottled. He chased the whole
triiie for an hour, without capturing one of
them, and gave it up in disgust, after
breaking dowii an acre or so of cotton.
The new anatomy lis constructed with a
spring in his back, after the fashion of that
famous bug classically defined as a jack
snapper, by which It is enabled to jump six
or eight feet with the celerity of a flea. It
seems to have been built for jumping cotton
rows. Thus far none of them have been
taken alive. The only one caught was
dead and had his back broken. Cotton has
beed considerably damaged in that region
by the new fashioned jack-snapper.

SUMMEB PERILS—HOW TO ESCAPE THEM.
It will not do to trifle with the health in hot
weather. Vigor oozes through the *kin at every pore,
and it is by physical vigor only that unhealthy influ
ences can be baffle* *nd lepeiied., elements
are evaporated in perspiration. Ihfeiifeheat convett*
a man into a self-acting pnmp, and the moisture that
U pumpe l out of him is derived from the well-springs
of life within him. There is great need, therefore,
that these sources of physical strength should be in a
condition to bear, without danger or inconvenience,
the extraordinary drain. If they are not in such a con
dition, the individual becomes languid and low spirited.
The main thing is to keep the digestive apparatus
in good working trim ; tor if the stomach, the purvey
or of the system, does it duty thorough y, the liver,
the bowels, the brain, and the nervous system, being
duly nurtured, will be likely to do (heirs. In view oi
these facts, it is manifest that a powerful and whole
some vegetable tonic like HOS i’RTI'ER’B STOM
ACH BITTERS is especially required at this en
feebling season. It-is the most admirable of all cor
rectives and iuvigorants, and for this reason : it docs
not overstimulate the system. The proportions of
aperient, tonic and stimulating' components are so
judiciously gra lusted, that the processes of invigora
tion and purification go on simuflaneously, and no un
due excitement is created in the circulation or the
brain. All unraedicated stimulants, however pure,
excite the pulse and the rervous system. Their ex
hilarat ng effect is temporary, and when it passes off
the physical and metdal depression they were em
ployed to remove returns in an aggravated form. But
this is jot the case when HOSTETTER’S BITTERS
are taken a s’omachic and nervine. The medicinal
herbs, roots and gums with winch they arc impreg
nated, neutralize the excitingjprincipleof the rye spirit
which forms tluir has s, and which isin itself the most
Wholesome of all the vaiieties of alcohol.

Hurley’s Sarsaparilla and Potash
Maintains the secretions, especially thsc of the
shin and kidneys, increases nu rilion, and allays
raotbid irritability of the nervous and circulating
systems. Hence an admirable remedy for debility
during or alter a mercurial course, and for the nml(i
furious variety of symptoms which arise, when the
health is broken down, as well as by the disease a*
by its remedy. For Scrofula, it is the most certain
cure.
DISEASED KIDNEYS,
If neglected, are almost certain to end fatally, some
times the patient dies of exhaustion and obstinate
vomiting; sometimes of suppression of urine and
coma; sometimes In a sudden tit of severe shivering ;
■ and sometimes of a . rapid attack of acute inflamma
tion. In the treatment, the golden rule must be ob
served. so forcibly stated by Dr. Prout, that modera
tion in the quantity is of quite ns much consequence
as attention to the quality of food. Os alcoholic
liquors, sound sherry of the drier kinds or small
quantics of brandy or Hollands and water are the best.
In the medical treatment. HURLEY’S COMPOUND
SARSAPARILLA AND POTASH has proved
highly beneficial from its vegetable alkali principles,
which entering into the blood, possesses the property
of abstracting from it a quantity fit nitrogenous mat
ter suUlcient for its conversion into liipputic acid, anr.
in this very soluble form is -readily excreted, and ex
pels disease from the kidneys. It may therefore be
given with confidence that it will limit, if not cure,
the disease.

■Jjf* THE
Six Great Remedies
OF THE AGE.
PURIFY YOUR BLOOD
HURLiY’SJA&SAF&IILLI.
o F ALL the remedies that have heen discover
ed durins; the present age for the “ thousand Ills that
flesh is heir to,” none equal this wonderful prepara
tion. Only 15 years have elapsed since the discover
er (who spent a decade in studying, experimenting
aud perfecting it,) first introduced it to the public,
and it is already recognized by the most eminent phy
sicians in ail parts of the country to be the most sur
prising and effective remedy for certain diseases of
which they have knowledge.
All other Compounds or Syrups of this Root have
hitherto failed to command the sanction of the Facul
ty, because, on being tested, they have been fonnl to
contain noxious ingredients, which neutralise the
good effects of the Sarsaparilla, and oftentimes injure
the health of the patient. It is not-so with Hurley’s
preparation.
This is the pure and genuine extract of the root, and
will, on trial, be found to effect a certain and perfect
cure of the following complaints :
Affections of the Bones, Habitual Costive
ness, Debility, Diseases of tbe Kid
neys. Dlspepsia, Kryslpells, Female
Irregiilarities. Fistula, all Skin
Diseases, Diver Coinnlal»*-
fula, or King’s JEvil,
" syphilis, and all
Impurities of
the Blood.
Hurley’s Ague Tonic.
PERFECTLY RELIABLE.
The only remedy for Chills and Fever, or Agne and
Fever, that is or can be depended upon is’ HUR
LEY’S AGUE TONIC. There have lieen thousands
cured by using it who have tried the usual remedies
without benefit.
WORTHY OF ATTENTION.
To Dr. Thot. A. Hurley :
I hereby certify that during last year I was at! ach
ed with the Ague whilst in Vicksburg, Miss.’ and
used several popular medicines with butiemporary
relief. On reaching home the disease returned in a
worse type, if possitdo, when my medical attendant
ordered'Quinine in large doses—frequently as high as
dO g.-ains per day, and which must have cost me near
ly SIOO. X consulted Dr. Smith, of Louisville, and
found he prescribed quinine and arsenic combined,
which I refused to take, preferring to let the disease
hike its course. I was almost bloodlesc, extremely
exhausted, and piononnced with enlarged Liver and
Spieen. About this time the advertisement of Hur
ley’s Ague Tonic appeared in a city paper, and I de
termined to give it a trial. I did so, ana havo no rea
son to regret it. One hottie restored me completely,
and since that time I have seen nearly a hundred
cases in which it acted with equally happy results,
and would certainly recommend it as preferable to
any other tonic before the public.

HURLEY’S
Popular Worm Candy.
As this is really a specific for Worms, and the host
and most palatable form to give to children, it is not
surprising that it is fast taking tbe place of all other
preparations for worms—it being perfectly tasteless,
ana any child will take it.

To Jat. £uddle dt Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gkntlumsn: This is to certify that I have been
fur years a sufl'erer, and have tried all the Tonics I
have of or seen advertised, with little or no re
lief from any or x heard your Hurley Bitters
highly spoken of, and trlea » with little faith
in it before I commenced, and to my nnd
joy, befbre I finished one bottle, I felt a great deal
better, and firmly believe that on one or two occasions
it was the means of saving and prolonging ray life. I
conscientiously recommend them to all sufferers as
the best Bitters known, and advise them always to ask
for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and have no other. You can
use this as you think proper, if it wilt benefit others.
Yours, truly, Ac.,
JOHN W. DIXON.

DR. SEABROOK’S
GUxer of Pyrophosphate of Iron
and Calisaya.
This elegant combination possesses all the tonic
properties of Peruvian Bark and Iron, without the
disagreeable taste and bad effects of. either, separate
ly or in other preparations, of these valuable medi
cines. It should he taken in all cases when a gentle
tonic impression is required after convalescence from
rivsbs or debilitating diseases, or in those distress
ing irregularities peculiar to females. No female
should be without it, if liable to such diseases, for
nothing can well take its place.
