SPARTANBURG.
A_ personal difficulty occurred on our
streetsaboufc dark Monday evening between.
Henry Alley, and a negro named Munn
Thomson, which resulted' in the shooting
of Thomson in the foot fey Alley. The
wound, though serious, is not considered
dangerous.
Bishop Davis preached at the Church of
the Advent last Sunday to a large congre
gation, and administered the rite of con
firmation to one candidate. Much to the
regret of the congregation, the Bishop was
unable, on account of ill health, to conclude
-mis discourse.
The election last Monday for iutendaut
and wardens passed <4f quietly, resulting
in the election of the “dry ticket,’ by a
handsome majority. The successful can
didates were, for InTendant—J. H. Evins ;
Wardens—J. W. Carlisle, George Cofield.
There was a unanimous vote in fimit* of
ratifying the subscriptions of $50,000 made
by the Council to the Air Line..
A colored man named Frank Burnett
was killed on Tuesday night, about ten
o’clock, in the rear of the brick blacksmith
•shop on Main street. The shot which caused
his death was heard by a large number of
our citizens. Those who first reached him
found him living, but unconscious and
unable to speak. He died in a few min
utes.
Nothing positive has yet been developed
ns to the murderer. All the circumstances
indicate a premeditated, cold-blooded mur
der, and we trust the guilty parties will
soon be brought to justice.— Ornette.
The quiet of our town was broken last
Thursday night, by tlu: alarm of fire,
caused by the burning of Mr. Miles Lee’s
kitchen. The dwelling house was greatly
endangered by its proximity to the fire,
but escaped without damage. The kitchen
and its entire contents were consumed, ag
gregating a loss of several hundred dol
lars.—Spur in n.

Baptist Church, situated in the upper pass
o<’ Greenville county, twenty four miles

ship was small.
OCONEE.
The public buildings in Walhalla are
being pushed vapidly forward. The jail 1
can be completed in two weeks after the.
necessary lumber is oblaiued. The lower
story is now finished and ready for occupa
tion, bill, the oak plank for flooring and
ceiling the prison rooms has not yet been
prepared. This is to be put up rough aud
will ta.ke' but a slidrt time, and then
county can Stive the expense of transporting •
prisoners to jail in another county.' The
building OT flic court house was com
menced on Thursday last. The outer and
partition walls have been raised to the top
ol the sleepers on the first floor. The foun
dation is three brick thick, and the wall
above two brick. The passage walls iu the
lower story are one and a half brick, and
the partition walls one brick thick. The
lower story will contain seven rooms. The
court room will be a large and commodious
one, sixty by forty feet, arranged with ele
vated seats iu Hie back end, under which
two jury rooms will be cutoff. The inte
rior arrangements are after the style of the
old court house, which, we believe, every
Judge pronounced the most convenient and
best arranged court house in the State. The
contractors expect, with ordinary weather,
to complete the walls iu four weeks, and
entertain no fears but the building will lie
so far toward completion by the second
Monday in November as to he used by the
court.

We learn that two colored women on
Mr. Richardson’s plantation, near Allen
dale, a few days ago, ran a race in picking
cotton on a bet of five dollars. At the
close of the day one had picked four hun
dred pounds and the other four hundred
and one and a half pounds.
We are informed by Mr. McMillan, rail
road agent at this place, that up to Sep
tember 17,1868, he had received thirty-two
bates of cotton for shipment to Ohariestou.
Up to the same time'thisyear he lias receiv
ed two hnudred and eighty-five bales.
from all parts of the county we learn
that the rqs| is spreading to such an ex
tent that some planters wiitehave nearly
their whole cotton crops gathered by the
Ist of October. When we consider that the
picking season usually extends into the
mouth of December, this will satisfy us of
the great falling off iu the cotton crop of
1869.
