State Items.
The Bapdersville Georgian reports sixty
one members added to the Christian Church
in September.
The Hfivannah News reports that the
negroes ft that city have had a meeting
and pieced support to the Conservative
municipal ticket.
Amonjt the names mentioned for the
mayoral.y of Atlanta is that of Col. Luther
J. Glenn
Ssverd enterprising farmers of Hall
county lave commenced the cultivation of
clover oi an extensive scale.
The D>ugherty Farmer’s Club, says the
Albany .news, will attend the State Fair,
and will <amp on the grounds. Members
of the City will organize messes, and each
mess will tnanage its own domestic iffairs,
and provide its own “ ways and means.”
The Atnmfca Constitution reports that on
Monday evening Treasurer Angier refused
to pay an Executive warrant drawn in
favor of (Ben. L. ,T. Gartrell for $250, for
services rendered in the quo warranto case
of Butt us.(Spencer.
The Wairenton Clipper says it is indebted
to a gentleman, who traveled on a mule,
for AUguSta papers in advance of the mails.
The mail i,gents on the Georgia Railroad
are, to use t mild term, nuisances. There
is not a we?k passes but what our mail is
miscarried.
The Early County News says it is told by
planters t »at at least half the cotton of
that section has been gathered, and that
there will 4ot be a lock of the staple in the
fields by t£e first of November.
We lears that the Templeton Troupe will
make their appearance in Rome early in
November. We hope to have scenery in
our Hall by that time. —Home Commercial.
Should the Troupe make their appearance
in the same role as they did last Summer in
other cities, you will have plenty of
“scenery,”
The Gainesville Air Line Eagle indulges
In a little boasting. It says: Our town is
looking upj and will soon begin to change
her old weat her-beaten and war-worn gar
ments and don the more agreeable and ele
gant drapery of progress. Property is
weekly changing hands, and men of enter
prise and capital are arranging to live and
do bnsttfpstf here. The mountain towns and
the low country are giving up their best
citizens to us ; and as soon as the road is
completed, we will, take position among the
foremost.
Speaking of iron ore,, the Air Line Eagle
says: “This valuable metal abounds in
Hall, Gwinnett, Ilnbevsliaip, White, Banks
ami Lumpkin con min* fnf. best.
Y ” ;, ir. l,< iiyfr“ i <> ' l 'lfi l,, 'iVii The
hemaftw «*fl reach 75 to HQ pet cent., and
the sulpliurets of iron and copper, though
poorer, will, in time, be very valuable from
their abundance and cheap production. All
the counties of Northeast Georgia abound
in iron ores : but those counties situated on
and near the great belt of the primitive
limestone, which traverses the States ol
Georgia and South Carolina, a short dis
tance North of the ithcolumite, or flexible
sandstone, contain a much larger quantity.
The Press and Messenger hears from all
sides of persons coming to the Fair, to be
held in Eutonton on the 2d of November.
The occasion promises to be one of unusual
interest, and will be the means of bringing
together a large number of the citizens of
Middle Georgia. The Secretary "informs
the editor of the Press and Messenger that in
quiry is being made daily by persons wish
ing to exhibit articles. Many want to go
to Eaton ton first, and if they stand the test,
of fair criticism, will then place their
articles on exhibition at Macon. Several
distinguished gentlemen from abroad are
expected to be present, and the Directors
of the State Fair, with their worthy Secre
tary, are to be prominent among them.
A Geological Survey in Georgia.—
We perceive that ltev. Charles Wallace
Howard has been employed by Superin
tendent Hulbert, of the State Road, to
make a thorough survey ot the. southern
slope of Lookout Mountain in search of
iron, coal and petroleum oil. It is said
that Mr. Howard will commence the sur
vey in the neighborhood of Alpine, near the
line of Chattanooga county, Georgia, and
Cherokee, Alabama.
We have always been in favor of a State
Geologist, and have frequently urged the
Legislature to re-establish the office; but,
after a full consideration of the matter at
their last session, they very unwisely re
used to do so. But it seems we have a
State Geologist any way. Mr. Hulbert, of
the State Road, has appointed one “on his
own hook,” and without a particle of au
thority from the Legislature or anybody
else. He and the Governor seem to think
that they have a carte blanche in their re
spective offices to do what they please and
spend the mouey of the State according to
their own good pleasure and in su
preme , contempt of the legislative au
thority. The public money must be
spent hinder appropriations made by law,
and all other plans for disposing of it
are illegal. A Geologist may benefit the
State and develop interests that in time
will be valuable, to the State Road, but
what right lias Mr. Hulbert to appoint
one? The law makes no provision for such
an officer, and he might as well go to work
and build a half dozen branch roads as feed
ers to the main trunk. It would be no
greater usurpation, and yet, why does he
not dare to do it ?
If the Legislature does not put some
check upon Executive license, there is no
tellin" what will become of us. The hard
earned money of tire people is being squan
dered in every imaginable project, on
favorites, and for personal and political
purposes in a manner that bids fair to veri
fy the prophecy of Joe Brown that, “ if
Bullock were elected Governor, he would
bankrupt the State in two years.” As
matter are going on, it will not take that
long; and as to the law, that has long
since’been set aside as of no binding force
upon the Executive,— Savannah Republican.
Superior Couiit, Bartow County
Most of last week'was consumed in dispos
ing of the criminal docket. Mr. Jourdan,
for assaulting the young Griffins, with In
tent to murder, was sentenced to the peni
tentiary for four years. Miss Evans, for
killing James M. Denman, found guilty
of murder and recommended to the mercy
of the court, was sentenced to the peniten
tiary for life time. Wm. Spencer, father of
Green Spencer, who killed Richard Smith,
a few days since, was tried as accessory to
the murder and acquitted.
[SandermUe Georgian.
A Georgian named George Clark, while
in Memphis on Friday, on his way to Texas,
fell among negro thieves who relieved him
of S9O and his blanket, all he had. The
negroes were afterward arrested.

SPECIAL NOTICES.
SOUSE THE SYSTEM.
war IT 18 A SAD THING TO PAB3THROUGH
life only half alive. Yet there are thousands whose
habitual condition is one of languor and debility.
They complain of no specific disease ; they suff:r no
positive pain ; but they have no relish for anything
which affords mental or sensuous pleasure to their
more robust and enargetic fellow beings.
In nine cases out of ten this state of lassitude and
torpor arises from a morbid stomach. Indigestion
destroys the energy of both mind and body. When
the waste of nature is not supplied by a due and
regular assimilation of the food, every organ is starved,
every function is interrupted.
Now, wliat does common sense suggest under these
circumstances of depression ? The system, needs rous
ing and strengthening; not merely for an hour or two,
to sink afterward into a more pitiable condition than
ever, (as it assuredly would do if an ordinary alcho
bolic stimulant were rcsoited to,) but radically and
permanently.
Howls this desirable object to be accomplished?
The answer to this question, founded on the unvary
ing experiences of a quarter of a century, is easily
given: Inftise new vigor into the digestive organs by
a course of HOSTETTKK’S STOMACH BITTERS.
Do not waste time in administering temporary reme
dies, but wake the system up by recuperating the
fountain-head of physical strength and energy, the
great organ upon which all the other organs depend
for their nurture and support.
By the lime that a dozen doses of the great vege.
table tonic and inv’gorant have been taken, ihe feeble
frame of the dyspeptic will begin to feel its benign in
fluence. Appetite will be created, and with anpetite
Ihe capacity to digest what it craves. Persevere until
tile cure is complete—until healthful blood, fit to be
the material of flesh and muscle, boue and nerve, and
brain, flows through the channels of circulation, in
stead of the watery pabulum with which they have
heretofore been imperfectly nourished.
