WEDNESDAY MORNING, 00T. 13,1868
The Death of Me. James Hose. —T*his
worthy representative of old South Caro
lina died yesterday morning, at his resi
dence in this city, in the 77th year of his
age. Mr. Hose was born in this State, and
educated principally Hi England, as was
the custom of the wealthiest families of the
low country. For many years he sate in
the lower house or the State Legislature,
and was for a long period President of the
Southwestern Railroad Bank and a director
of the South Carolina Railroad Company.
In every position to which he was called he
bore himself with quiet dignity and an in
tegrity beyond reproach. Earnest and
pains-taking in the discharge of his every
duty, he was remarkable, even amongst the
gentlemen of the old school, for his cour
tesy, suavity and unswerving fidelity to
priqpiple. Devotedly attached to his na
tive State, he sympathized in her sorrows
and shared in tier pains. Would that lie
could have been spared to behold the day
of the awakening of his beloved South
Carolina from the long sleep of humiliation
and defeat! This was not to lie. The good
man, the faithful citizen, the true friend,
has gone from amongst our people, leaving,
in the record of his quiet and useful life, no
less than in his personal character, a model
worthy to be followed by the younger men,
to whom we now look for the future honor
and renown of the State.
• [Charleston News, \%ih.
Oglethorpe University —The Board
of Trustees, with a fuller attendance than
usual, met on the Gth iust. in this city.
They resolved that the institution ought to
be reorganized and sustained. They were
informed that if the college would be re
moved to Atlanta, that city and county
would contribute $40,000 iu property or
money. After discussion, it was resolved
that the question of removal to Atlanta be
referred to the Synods at their next meet
ing, and if the above sum in money or
property should be contributed by the city
and community of Atlanta by the time,
and two or three Synods of Georgia, South
Carolina and Alabama should so order, Che
institution should be removed to that city.
Dr. Cunningham, of LaGrange, Ga., whs
elected President by a unanimous vof .
Professor Smith is the incumbent of the
Alabama professorship. Professor Lane
having resigned the chair of Mathematics
and Astronomy, Rev. G. W. Petrie was
elected to the same. Mr. S. Bates was
elected to the professorship of Ancient
Languages. The honorary degree of D. D.
was conferred oil Rev. James E. Evans, of
the M. E. Conference, uiul that of LL. D.
on Hon. Washington Poe, of Macon, Ga.
The Board then adjourned, subject, to
the call of tin* President, Hon. E. A. Nis
bet.—AT icon Telegraph.
v A Prospective Suit Against the Geor
gia Railroad. —The Atlanta Era, of yes
terday, says:
“For quite a number of years the city
lias been trying to obtain ail enlargment of
the culvert under the Georgia Railroad, on
Butler street. The street is a very import
ant one, and much used, while the culvert
is too narrow to admit of the passage of
more than one vehicle at a time. President
King, of the Georgia Road, declines to have
the culvert interfered with, and lias refused
to open it or give the consent of the road
to its opening. The City Council has de
cided that the widening of the culvert is a
necessity, and has raised a special commit
tee, which is directed to proceed with the
work. Judge King has been notified that
the work will be commenced on the 15th
inst., and that suit for damages will be
commenced against the corporation of
which lie is the head. In all probability
he will sue out an injunction to prevent
Council from proceeding with the work.
It seems therefore that, whether the culvert
is opened or not, there is likely to be a law
suit iu regard to it.”
Astounding Phenomenon. —About the
hour of 1, p. in., yesterday, the 6th insfc.,
the community was startled by a terrific
explosion in a direction apparently north
west from this, accompanied by a dense
volume of smoke. One gentleman com
pared the.report to tiie simultaneous dis
charge of a park of artillery, and distinctly
saw the column of smoke which rose in the
quarter from which the sound proceeded.
The explosion was heard by two-thirds
of our citizens, and some assert that the
shock of an earthquake was plainly felt.
Addison, an intelligent colored man in
the employment of Mr. William 11. Tirooks,
says he was at Beall’s mill when the event
occurred, and, in company with a wldte
man, saw what resembled a sheet of flame
descend from t in; heavens towards Lump
kin, northwest of Cuthbert, and heard at
the same time a terrific explosion.
The true solution of the mystery may be
found, perhaps, in the sudden projection
from the moon, or some other heavenly
body, of a vast ajrolite or metalic mass in a
state of fusion, which doubtless lies deeply
embedded in the bosom of mother earth.
We shall anxiously await developments.
[ Cuthbert Appeal, 7th.
A New Freight Line to be Estab
lished. —Our cit y was visited on Thursday
by a railroad delegation, to Inspect the
river steamers of the Barnett Line, with a
view to their purchase. The result is that
they have virtually bought all the boats
that run to Columbus, except the two
steamers of the Central Line—in all, some
seven first-class steamers. The intention
is to run them in connection with the line
of steamers to New Orleans, and also with
the railroad now in process of completion
to the river.
The delegation consisted of Captain Mc-
Donald, of the C. S. A., son of ex-Gov.
McD, of this State, President; Major
Burns, of New York, Engineer, and Col.
D. P. Holland, Legal Adviser of the Jack
sonville and Mobile Railroad, now run
ning from Jacksonville, Fla., and Savan
nah to Quincy, the ulterior aim of which is
to connect with Mobile and New Orleans
and a Southern Paeiflc railroad. They
were accompanied by Mr. Barnett, chief
owner of the boat line. They left here for
Albany, to examine the steamer Jackson,
now on the Flint river.
The Uempany proposes to be ready to
take freight from Columbus by the 15th of
November. — Columbus Sun.
The Duel.—A rumor is prevalent here
tq-ijight that the much-talkpd-of duel be
tween Colonel Mosby and Colonel Boyd,
military sheriff of Fauquier county, Va.,
took place to-day, and that both were
plightly wounded.
{Data, in Baltimore Sun of 9th. '
A Vienna paper says: “ Bismarck’s dis
ease, as the French papers said some time
ago, is simply delirium tremens. He can
not hold a pen in the morning, and he has
to take strong stimulants in order to over
come his nervousness. He can never make
a speech in Parliament without previously
taking strong doses of Cognac brandy.”
