MOKTUING, NOV. 5. 1869
State Items.
An interesting anrl peculiarly promising
little boy, the child of Mr. Joseph Clisby,
editor of the Macon Telegraph, died on
Monday night.
There is to be an exhibition of steam
plowing at, the State Pair.
The Atlanta Era reports that a Are oc
curred in Carroll county last Thursday
night, which destroyed the store of Messrs.
Bonner & Son, together with their entire
stock of goods. Their loss was about three
thousand dollars. The Are is believed to
have been the work of an incendiary.
At a very late hour on Tuesday night,
says the Atlanta Era , the Rolling Mill was
discovered to be on Are. The Are was dis
covered In time, however, to extinguish it
before ranch damage was done. It origi
nated on the outside of a portion of the
building used for a blacksmith shop, hence
the impression that it was an attempted in
cendiarism.
The Rome Courier says: Rev. C. W.
Howard has just returned from his search
for coal and iron, and reports several very
important discoveries. His report will be
published in pamphlet.
The Savannah News says: The first in
stalment of 16 horses, band wagon, and a
quantity of tent equipments for Stone &
Murray’s Circus, arrived by the steamship
Herman Livingston, from New York, on
Sunday evening last. The balance of the
stock, with the members of the company,
will arrive by the General Barnes on Sun
day next.
The Albany News, of Tuesday, says: On
Friday night last the gin house of Mrs.
Towns, near that city, was destroyed by
lire. Wagon tracks were discovered, and
traced to the abode of a negro, where cot
ton, supposed to be stolen from the gin by
the incendiary, was found. Two negroes
were arrested on the charge of stealing the
cottou, some six or eight bales, and then
firing the gin house The evidence is cir
cumstantial, but strongenough to leave no
doubt of the guilt of the negroes.
Johu Swan, Esq., of Greene county, pre
sented the Greensboro Herald with a couple
of stalks of ribbon cane which measured
eight feet in length.-
The farmers of Greene county are suffer
ing from the incursions of thieves into their
fields, who steal corn from the stalk.
The Herald says that real estate in Greene
county has been greatly euhanced for the
last six months. Lands that twelve months
ago would not bring more than $3 to $5
per acre, are how held at from $lO to sls.
On Tuesday, sale day, says the Greens
boro Herald , the town lot belonging to the
estate of Hon. Y. P. King, deceased, was bid
in by Judge E. L. King, at $1,650. The
Sanders plantation north of Greensboro’,
containing eleven or twelve hundred acres,
sold for a fraction over $2 per t acre.
The Rome Fair commenced on Wednes
day morning, with indications of great suc
cess.
Gen. Ransom, of North Carolina, who
was with Gen. Lee after the surrender at
Appomattox, in a late address,*said; “ On
the morning after the surrender, the armies
still occupying the positions of the day be
fore, several officers and gentlemen had as
sembled at the tent of Gen. Lee, on a small
eminence in the woods. I shall never for
get the group. It was the first and only
time I ever saw that great and good man
show emotion; it seemed as if his heart
would break. The eye which had gazed
like the angel on the red lightning of a
battle was wet with a patriot’s tear, dim
with a soldier’s grief. The conversation
was a sorrowful one, for it related to the
surrender, when at length Gen. Gordon,
as well as I recollect, said: ‘ Well, Gen.
Lee, what must we do now?’ Well do I
remember Gen. Lee’s face, as lighting up
from gloom, he said: ‘ I can only say to
you, gentlemen, what I wrote to Mrs. Lee
this morning: we must cultivate and
strengthen our virtue. Human virtue
ought at least to be equal to human
calamity.’ ”
The Key West Dispatch says: “ Every
arrival from Havana brings a number of
Cubans— males, females and children.—
They have introduced a style, npt .hereto
fore In vogue with us, of permitting their
young children of both sexes to go entirely
nudei” The Dispatch don’t; admire the new
fashion.

The only remedy for Chills aud Fever, or Ague and
Fever, that is or can be depended upon is HUR
LEY’S AGUE TONIC. There have been thousands

Without benefit.
The following certificate from a reliable citizen of
Mississippi speaks for itself:
Mbbidu s, Miss., Oct. 13,1868.
Jfr. Btf Y. R. Chadwick :
DbakSir: This Is to certify that I bought fri ra
you, by your recommendation, a bottle of Hurley’s
Ague Tonic, and it cured two cases of fever and asue
ortifteerr-months’ standing. I cheerfully recommend
Hurley’s Tonic to the public generally.
Respectfully, yours, JOHN B. WRIGHT.

To Vr. Thos. A. Hurley:
Sib : I deem it an act of justice to yon to state that
in the month of February last I bad a severe attack
( f inflammatory rheumatism, which completely pros
trated mo. At the same time my lungs weie much
iifllictcd. I was no reduced that it was with the great
est difficulty that I could walk. I procured some of
your Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com
menced taking it. I found that 1 began to improve—
my cough became less severe—the sorenesß of my
lungs and breast gradually subsided—my rheumatic
pains less acute. I attribute this mainly to your Sar
saparilla. I have now been taking it for over two
months; have taken in all five bottles. Its effects
have been most satifactory to me. and I advise others
similarly aillictcd to give you a trial.

Popular Worm Candy.
As this is really a specific for Worms, and the best
and most palatable form to give to children, it is not
surprising that it is last taking the place ot ail other
preparations for worms—if being perfectly tasteless,
s'ld any child will take it.
Messrs Janies Ruddle <9 Cos. :
Gentlemen : It gives me great pleasure to say,
after using ail the other worm remedies known to me,
with but partial success to my children, 1 was advised
to try Dr T. A. Harley’s, and since using it my chil
dren have become Wi II aud healthy. The children
would eat it ad i lie time, it is so pleasant, if we would
let them. I believe it is one of tbe best and safest
remedies known, and as such, recommend it to one
and all. Jab. W. TRAVIS.

When living in your city I used several bottles of
DR. SBABUOOK’H INFANT SOOTHING SYR
UP, and found it to do my child more good, and it
would rust better after using it, than any other reme
dy I ever tried. I can say with confidence, it is the

you would get the Druggists here to Keep it. If any
one does, please let me know; if not, send me one
