Citizen of Tuesday last says aa
larue quantity of stock was
thrown upon that market on the day be
fore—especially . mules, and thinks there
were about one thousand mules offered.—
Good stock ran ns high as $165 ; yearlings
SIOO. Cattle brought about 6 cents. We
quote a few interesting paragraphs from
the Citizen: »
Phil Kidd sold a good many cattle, mostly
of inferior grades. Best two-year olds
brought 5% cents. The demand was limit
ed—farmers generally being supplied.—
Mules brought good prices. Two year olds
from $l5O to $l6O ; yearlings, first class,
$lO5 per head.
George W. Hamilton reports about 500
cattle on the market. Sold 80 head two
year olds at S6O 30; SO head, ordinary, SSO.
Mules, 40 head yearlings $95 50 ; 45 two
year olds, withdrawn at $l5O ; 30 colts, $Bl.
Horses, common, brought from SSO tosllo.
No fine horses offered.
A. W. Lydick sold good two-year old
cattle from 5% to 6 cents ; darlings, from
S3O to SSO per head. Mules—yearlings,
from SBO to $135. Horses, plugs, from SSO
to SIOO.
At C. C. Skillman’s stables three lots of
mules were sold as follows : 22 head at
$l6O ;21 head at $130; 9 head, $l4O. Sev
eral ‘-orses brought from S7O to $l5O.
There was also some sharp trading done
privately on the ‘streets. We saw one man
buy 18 head of mules and sell them agaiu
in a few minutes at a profit of sl2 50 on
the head.
Crops in Northeast Georgia. —From
extensive personal observation and careful
inquiry, we think we can safely assume
that, unfavorable as have been the seasons,
the people of Northeast Georgia will not
only be able to subsist themselves until
another crop is made, but also furnish a
considerable surplus of some products.—
The corn crop is turning out much better
than was anticipated, and in the mountain
there is an unusually heavy
"""mass,” which will save largely in the
fattening of hogs. In some counties there
will be corn to spare, while nearly all of
them will make a surplus of pork, and
numbers of beef cattle have already
been "Sold. •
We were pleased to observe that the
quantity of small grain sown, which is al
ready green in the fields, is much larger
than usual. It is to the manifest interest
of farmers, now that labor is scarce and
unreliable, to increase largely their small
grain crops and commence the growing of
clover and the grassea— Athem Watchman, .»
Take Care of Your Pocket Books.—
As justification of this precautionary ad
vice to such of our citizens as design visit
ing the State Fair at Macon, we extract
the following from the Journal and Messen
ger : ■ .
“ We have it from good authority that a
party of thirty-five New York sharpers
have made their advent iu Georgia. Some
of them are now working the Rome Pair,
greatly to their own advantage; others are
giving the Atlantans » touch of their ras
cally qualities ; while the advance guard
has already arrived here, and we know it
will not be long ere we shall be called upon
to chronicle some of their exploits. It is
evident to those posted that the whole of
this gang will rendezvous here during the
State Fair, and ply their nefarious calling
to the best advantage.” 5
Rabun. —We spent a week in the ancient
dominion of Rabun, during the sitting of
the Superior Court, and were pleased to
find that her patriotic citizens had got
upon their feet again, and their material
condition had greatly improved within the
past three years. We fbund the people
jubilant over the prospect of the construc
tion of the Bine Ridge and Northeastern
Railroads. The work on the Blub Ridge
Road has been resumed, and a small force
is now working at the tunnel at the “ Sad
dle,” under the direction of Mr. Steers, ah
eminently energetic sub-contractor, who
has had large experience in railroad con
struction. ; '
With the railroad facilities now pro
jected, we are not surprised that new life
Should be infused into all kinds of business
in the up-country. We shall not be at all
surprised to see two lines of railway from
Clayton to the seaboard in foil operation
wo years hence.— Athens Watchman.
