WEDNESDAY MORNING!, NOV. 17,1869
Railroad Speculations.—Hamburg to
be Rejuvenated. —The city editor of the
Charleston Courier , writiogfrom Colombia,
to his paper, says: •
“ Your allusions to movements in Geor
gia looking to tapping the Blue Ridge Rail
road at Clayton, has started some of the
interested parties in the Rabnn Gap Road
to consider measures looking to a check to
these Georgia schemes. It is said to be
now a part of the Blue Ridge programme
to continue it from Anderson u. H. to
Hamburg, 8. C., thence along the Savannah
river to a junction with the Port Royal
Road, on the Carolina bank of the river,
by which means, and discriminating rates
against the Clayton-Athens route, the busi
ness can be kept off the Georgia Road, and
given to Hamburg in preference to Au
gusta.
“Os course, there arc parties, the Green
ville Road, for instance, that would oppose
these plans, for interested motives, and it
is supposed that your South Carolina Road
would have something to say on this sub
ject—but here agaiu, surmises are contra
dictory as to the influence of your main
trunk road, for it is asserted in influential
quarters, that a majority of the directors
of the South Carolina Railroad Company
see the real permanent good of their road
and Its central terminal point, Columbia, in
the Ashviile couuection, via Spartanburg
or Greenville, and that while not unfriend
ly to the Blue Ridge Road, fears it in con
nection with Port Royal, should it be built
—while its old connection with the Georgia
Road gives assurance of a Western connec
tion, which, in the past has been a tower
of strength, and likely to increase in the
future. There is now no doubt that the
Ashviile connection will have a powerful
influence in* the coming session of the
Legislature, and Blue Ridge aid can only
be had by swallowing a large dose of State
aid, for at least six railroad companies."
Bob Wagner Killed.— On Sunday
night last, about 12 o’clock, the notorious
negro thief and burglar, Bob Waguer,
slipped the iron shackles from his leg, and
broke loose from the stockade of the Ma
con and Augusta Railroad, and endeavored
to make his escape. He boldly and daring
ly rushed through a squad of “ trusties,”
or those whose time is about out, aud got
into the woods. He was fired upon by the
guard at the time he mnde the break, but
escaped unhurt. Uufortnnately, in shoot
ing at Bob, one of the “ trusties," a negro
named Bob Bacon, was killed by the
guard.
Bob Wagner was pursued about one
mile aud a "half through the woods, with
hounds, and was overtaken near “ Story’s
cut" on the Central Railroad, where he
was again fired upon and shot down, three
bills takiug effect upon his body. He lived*
about fifteen minutes after he fell, and said
he preferred death to going back.
Soon after he Invoke from the stockade
ami during the excitement, Egypt Brown
another notorious scoundrel, sentenced to
|H^HPBIiPnrWffn l 'vr, tnnde a break
for mV-liberty and succeeded In gettiug
away. He, too, was Immediately pursued,
but at the present time it is not known with
what result.
The killing of Bob Bacon is very much
regretted, as his time of service was nearly
out and he bad been an obedient and in
fills! rio»« convict. No one, however, la
meuts the untimely and tragic end of Bob
Wagner. He had" escaped from the peni
tentiary several times, and instead of taking
advantage of his liberty to mend his evil
ways and seek an honest living, he would
return to this community and immediately
renew his villainies. He was a hardened,
desperate and mischievous man, and his
death in the manner above described will
take no one by surprise.
[ Telegraph and Messenger.
The Smartest Girl in Michigan.— At
Port Oneida, on lake Michigan, lives, it Is
said, “ the smartest girl in Michigan.” She
is a German, about seventeen years old,
and the oldest of a family of an even dozen,
living in a little double log cabin on the
shore of the lake. She delights in out door
life and employment, especially boating and
fishing, and for the last three years has
been “ master” of a handsome fishing craft
and a set of gill nets. She puts them out
early in April, and continues them till late
in the Fall. She is out every morning at
daylight, aud again in the evening, except
in the roughest weather. She takes a
younger sister along to help set and draw
nets. She often brings in a couple of huu
dred flue lake trout and whlteflsh at a haul.
She dresses them, tries out the oil, packs
and sends them away to market. Her
August aud September catch amounted to
over SBOO. Besides her fishing receipts, she
lias taken iu over $l7O this season for ber
ries, picked at odd hours by herself and sis
ter. All her money goes to her father.
Month after month he packs it away in old
sacks and stockings uuder his bed; night
after night he guards it with sabre and pis
tol. In all, she is said to have earned him
over $3,000. Os course, the old man is
proud of his girl, and tells of her exploits
with the liveliest twinkle of satisfaction.
Danger and hardships seem unknown to
her. She will go out in any blow, and
come in with full sails. Her white mast
and blue peunou are known by people far
along the coast. Boats salute her in pass
ing; boys swing their hats in proud recog
nition. Without knowing it, Lanie Bor
feine is a heroine.
Monstrosity.— We saw on yesterday, in
our city, oue of the most singular produc
tions in the way of a monstrosity that we
ever before witnessed—a negro child, still
born, whose head, the characteristic fea
ture of deformity, presenting the appear
ance of a goat’s bag strutted with milk.—
The scalp covered with hair, the face
natural, the trunk well developed. The
extremities, from the shoulder to the elbow,
and from the hip to the knee, not more
than half as long as usual.
[ West Point Shield.
Gin House Burnt.— We regret to learn
that the gin house of Col. Wm. Brown, of
Marion county, was destroyed by fire on
Tuesday night last. The building was
probably one of the largest and best of the
kind in the couuty. About forty bales of
cotton were also destroyed. No insurance.
Fire thought to have been caused by a
match dropped in the lint room.
[Americas Republican.
Five hundred dollars reward is offered by
the Agricultural Society of Early county
for the apprehension and delivery to the
sheriff of Early county, with evidence to
convict, the incendiary who fired and
burned the gin house of J. W. Alexander,
Jr., ot that couuty, which burning took
place on Wednesday, 3d of this month.
Iu Jacksonville, Fla., during the last six
months,93 new dwellings hare beenereclpd,
also 2 academies, 21 stares, 16 offices, 8
barns, 16 stables, 6 sheds, 11 shops. Making
a total of 173 buildings erected. One
hundred and twenty-four additions and
repairs have also been made.
Wilson Flonrnoy, the negro accused of
the murder of Dr. Ben. Ayer, of Jefferson
county, has been acquitted. The evidence
against the accused was circumstantial,
but very strong.
Dr. M. F. Stephenson will exhibit at the
Macon Fair a great natural curiosity, in
the shape of a doubled-tailed lizzard.
The West Point Shield says: We under
stand that arrangements are now rally con
summated to establish an iron foundry:
and machine shop, on an extensive scale,
in this city. The building is to occupy 50
by 210 feet.
Mr. Matthew Cook, an old citizen- ol
Madison, and who held the office of Tax
Receiver in Morgan county, died on Thurs
day last, after two days’ illness of pneu
ponla.
