Atmospheric Brake—Remarkable Ex
periments on the Chicago and Nobth
westbhn Railroad.— A large party, com
posed mainly of prominent railroad officials,
took an excursion yesterday afternoon on
the Galena division of the Chicago and
Northwestern Railroad for the purpose of
testing an atmospheric brake invented by
George Westlnghouse, Jr., of Pittsburg.
The train, consisting-of a powerful loco
motive and six fine passeuger cars of the
Pennsylvania Railroad, was brought here
at the suggestion of the Superintendent of
the Northwestern Road, expressly to ex
hibit the improvement to our railway men
(of whom a large number were present.)
The brake, which was subjected to the
most thorough tests, worked to the perfect
satisfaction of all present, who declared
that its equal had not been seen. The
heavy train was put under headway at the
rate of thirty miles an hour, and stopped
within a distance of eighty feet more thau its
length In nineteen seconds after the brake
.was applied. Another trial was even more
successful, the train makiug nearly forty
miles an hoar, and being stopped withlu
the leugth of about seven cars, or some three
hundred and fifty feet, in eighteen seconds,
without jerking, the track too, being rather
slippery.
This invention, which seems destined to
be ot incalculable benefit in preventing dis
asters, and thus saving life and property,
may be described as follows:
An air-pump attached to the locomo
tive, and operated by steam from the boiler,
fills a reservoir directly under the foot-board
with air compressed. The pump is self
acting. When the air-pressure in the reser
voir is equal to the steam-pressure in tht|
boiler, the pump ceases to act. When auy
of the air is used, so that the air-pressure i*r
decreased, it commences pumping again.
This reservoir communicates, by means of
an iron pipe like a gas-pipe, with aiuifon
cylinder undereach car,in which is aipton
working like a steam piston. This piston
moves a lever, which operates the braxes
in the ordinary way. The iron pipes
the cars are connected between the sars by
rubber hose with ingenious brass couplings.
When the brake is to be applied, the engi
neer simply turns a cock, which Qpens the
way for the compressed air to operate ot*
the pistons, which apply the brakes lnstan»
taneonsly and simultaneously on each truck
of every cas\
The brake has been in use for some weeks
on the Pennsylvania Central Railroad with
such success that it will probably be adopt
ed. It costs about SIOO a car to apply the
apparatus.— Chicago Post, 20 th.
More Outlawry 7n Kentucky—A
Regular Pitched Battle Fought—
Heavy Robbery, &c.— Louisville, November
28.—A desperate character named Cooper,
who had been whipped by a party of regu
lators in Pnlaski county, caused the arrest
of some of his neighbors, whom he accused
of the whipping. Saturday morning was
fixed for the trial, and Cooper and his
friends ent, , ; and Somerset, the county seat,
ftruudtj t.V‘ ve'-h; Here the accused party,
confederates, equally strong, euguged in a
quarrel, which culminated in a regular
pitched battle. One hundred and fifty
shots were fired, resulting in the.killing of
three men, named Dodd, Duntou.ituri Wil
’lam Pleasants, and the mortal wounding of
one, James Pleasants.
The fight was abated by mutuaPconsent,
both parses being out of ammunition.
Shortly after, each party (having recruited
its forces) were about to re-enter the lawn,
but armed citizens warned them off.
The jewelry store of Solomon R. Blesen- 1
thal, on Market street, near First, in this
city, was robbed this morning of gold and
silver watches, diamond rings and pins, to
the value of $6,000 or SB,OOO. No clue to
the robbers.
Death of Major Anthony Porter.—
As public journalists it is our sad duty to
chronicle the death of one of Savannah’s
oldest and most honored citizeus, the sever
ing of another link in the chain of human
experiences which bind the present to the
past. The subject of this hurried sketch
was itoru in Green county, Ga, nl 1798, and
was consequently seventy-one years of age
when called from the field of earthly useful
ness to the sure reward of a long life well
spent and marked with many deeds of pri
vate charity and public beuefaction. In
1816 he removed to this city, and for many
years was connected with the Georgia State
Bank, and, as its honored President, identi
fied with its interests and widely known
Aid respected throughout the State. A
quiet, unobtrusive citizen, a suave and
genial gentleman, he was alike honored and
esteemed in business life and beloved in the
social circle. His death occurred at seven
o’clock yesterday evening.

Railroad Lobbyists at the Legisla
ture of South Carolina.— A correspond
ent of the Charleston News, writing from
Columbia, says:
There are between fifty aud sixty rail
road lobbyists here at present, representing
the Spartanburg and Union, Greenville and
Columbia, Georgia Central, Cheraw and
Darlington, South Carolina Central, York,
Blue Ridge, Port Royal Wilmington and
Manchester, Georgetown, Northeastern,
and Charleston aud Savannah Railroads.
The representatives of all, excepting the
two last named, are here to have Leslie’s
bill refusing the aid of the State to railroads
repealed, aud it is reported held a caucus
lastt night and agreed to work together.—
They have an immense sum of money.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.-—s.
Louis, November 29.—A young man named
J. R. Peeler, who has been studying for the
ministry at Lebanon, 111., exhorting in that
vicinity the past year, was arrested at Le
banon on Friday last, on the charge of
stealing twenty-two hundred dollars in
bonds, belonging to one of the Professors
Qf McKendree College. The matter was
brought to light by evidence received from
& house of ill-fame in St. Louis, where, it
is alleged, he was a frequent visitor. He
confessed his guilt last evening, and during
the night made his escape. He has not
since been heard of.
Death of J. C. Janney. —The Columbia
(S. C.) Phcenix, of yesterday, says :
We regret to anuounce the sudden
death, on Tuesday night, of Mr. James C.
Janney, for many years a resident of this
city, and well known as the proprietor of
Janney’s Hotel. He was engaged in the
jury room during a portion of Tuesday, and
about 4. p. m., while at home, was taken
with paralysis, we believe, and died about
12 o'clock. Mr. Janhey was a native of
Londonn county, Va., and was fifty eight
years of age.
Longevity in Georgia.—A correspond
ent, writing to the Savannah News from
Black>hear, Ga., under date of November
30th, says : “ Mrs. Elizabeth Hearington
was born in Barnwell District, S. C., A. D.
1747, the 12th day of January of said year,
and departed this life on the 20th of No
vember, 1869, at the residence of her son
in-law. W. G. Rigging of Pierce county,
Ga. She enjoyed good health, and walked
without any help to within a few days of
her death. She lived 122 years, 10 months
and 8 days, according to my calculations.”
Lynch Law in South Carolina.—Sa
muel Jefferson, one of the hands on the
plantation of Mr. William Gregg, was de
tected In a theft of cotton by his fellow la
borers. They were justly indignant at his
depravity, and held a lynch court, when it
wu decided that the culprit should receive
twelve lashes on the bate back. They
were laid on by muscular arms, and justice
was appease 1, as all concerned were color
ed, aud they conceded that they had a per
fect right to whip each other.

Mr. £. T. Jt. Chadwick :
Dear Bib: This is to certify that I bought from
you, by your recommendation, a bottle of Hurley’s
Ague Tonic, and it cured two cases of fever and ague
of fifteen months’ standing. I cheerfully recommend
Hurley’s Tonic to the public generally.
Respectfully, yours, JOHN B, WRIGHT.

To Or. Thai. A. Burlty :
Bib : 1 deem it an act of justice to you to state that
in tbe month ol February last I had a severe attack
cf inflammatory rheumatism, which completely pros

afflicted. I was so reduced that It was with the great
ost difficulty that I con'd walk. I procured some of
yonr Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com
menced taxing it. I found that I began to improve—
my cough became lets severe—the soreness of my
lungs and breast gradually subsided—my rheumatic
pains less acu'e. I attribute this mainly to your Bar
saparllla. I have now been taking it for over two
months; have taken in all five bottles. Its effects
have been most satifactory to me, and I advise others
similarly afflicted to give you a trial.
