Verbarium—A Home Amusement.

A GOOD GAME.
There is a simple and very interesting
play to which our young folks have given
the name of “ Verbarium,” and which lias
had a remarkable effect within our observa
tion in stimulating the faculty of language
in many somewhat sluggish brains. A
number of persons—the more the merrier—
are provided with pencils, and a word
chosen as the Verbarium, which each writes
at the head of his sheet. The object of the
game is to draw out the vast number of
words which lie folded up, as it were, in
the verbarium, and this is accomplished,
amid much excitement and amusement, in
the following manner: Let us suppose, for
instance, that the word chosen is “treason.”
One of the company is appointed time
keeper ; and the signal being given, each
writes as rapidly as possible all the words
beginning with a “T,” which can be spelled
with the letters of the verbarium.
At the end of the two minutes the time
keeper calls “ Time !” and the eager pencils
arc obliged to stop. The company then
read, in order, the words they have written.
As each word is read, those who have not
written it call out “ No,” and those who
have it cross it out from their lists, and
place opposite to it a number of credits
equal to the number of defaulters. If three
persons, for instance, fail to have the word
“tea,” the rest take three credits. Two
minutes are then devoted to words begin
ning with “ R,” aud so on until the whole
verbarium is exhausted, when each player
counts the aggregate number of credits, aud
the one who has the largest number is de
clared the winner.
The possibilities of fun in this game do
not all appear from a dry description like
the foregoing.
The lamentations of those who, in their
zealous pursuits of complicated anagrams,
have overlooked the simplest combinations;
the shouts of laughter that attend the de
feat of an attempt to impose triumphantly
some word that “ isn’t in it;” the appeals
to the dictionary to settle disputed ques
tions, and a hundred other lively little in
cidents of the game, render it the most
popular with old and young that has ever
been introduced into the parlor.
To illustrate the extensive range of lan
guage which this simple amusement covers,
it is only necessary to say that not less
than one hundred words may be derived in
this way from “ treason,” which is, after
all, not a good verbarium.
Try Verbarium, and you will find it in
fallibly successful as a means of amuse
ment, while it is, as we have pointed out,
highly useful.
After giving the game here described
something of a trial, I can endorse it as
not only entertaining but exceedingly use
ful. For one thing, it furnishes excellent
lessons in spelling, which, in the multitude
of studies iu our schools at the present
(lay, is by far too much overlooked.
The principle of |<he game, too, is suscep
tible of variation. For instance, suppose
you introduce to your circle of family or
friends any word of two or three syllables,
letting it be one pretty fairly sprinkled
with vowels, and then all set to work—and
the little ones will be very likely to prove
smarter at It than the larger and older ones
—and see how many words each can dig
out of it in a given time, say ten, or fifteen
or twenty minutes—adopting, or not, a sys
tem of rewards for proficiencies and pun
ishments for delinquencies in bad spelling
and other shortcomings, as may be prefer
ed.
I must confess I was somewhat skeptical
as to there being as many as 100 words
“ folded up,” as the writer above asserts, in
the word “ treasonso we set to work
(myself and little ones) the other evening
to test it, and were soon satisfied of the
truth of the assertion, for it was not long
before eighty words responded to our exer
tions ; aud if the plurals of words and the
duplicating or repeating of letters in the
same word had been allowed, the number
could doubtless have been extended to
almost any limit. Here are over eighty
words given at random, as they were taken
merely as an example, and we concluded
that if, as the writer above assserts, “ treas
on” is not, after all, a good “ verbarium,”
then “the range of language which this
simple amusement covers” must indeed be
‘‘ extensive.”

Mr. R. T. R. Chadwick :

To I>r. TUox. A. Hurley:
But: I deem it an net of justice to you to state that
in the month ot February last 1 had a severe attack
of inflammatory rheumatism, which completely pros

afflicted. I was so reduced that it was with the great

your Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com

my cough became less severe —the soreness of my

pains less acu’e. I attribute this mainly to yonr far

months; wife ta*«n in all live bottles. Its effects
have boeriftiost satlfactory to me, and I advise others
Similarly afflicted to give you a trial.
