STEADY PROGRESS OP RADICAL USURPATION
PREDICTIONS WHICH WERE ONCE SCOUTED
NOW FULFILLED—'TENNESSEE TO BE RE
CONSTRUCTED —HUMILIATING POSITION OF
DEMOCRATIC MEMBERS OF CONGRESS.
Washington, December 29, 1869.
lWk*al leaders assume and proceed upon
.'sat, however barefaced their iu-
VW>e Constitution may have been
thA have come far short of what
the people of the North would stand. They
know ffclly the power of impudence and
audacity. Pending the late Presidential
election, It was boldly avowed by them in
political circles that a majority of the peo
ple would not dare to vote for the Demo
cratic nominees, in fear that if they were
elected thev would be unceremoniously set
aside by a" Radical House of Representa
tives, and thus possibly give rise to civil
commotions. In other words, that radical
power is based solely on the timidity of
their opponents.
There is good ground for this philosophic
action of the Radical faction. Years ago in
these letters, the scheme of subjecting the
States, North as well as South, to the un
bridled will of Congress was foreshadowed.
It was also from other and more efficient
sources that the people were warned that
the desootism exercised towards the “eleven
seceded States ” was merely intended as a
means to subjugate the States en masse. And
when it was urged that “ reconstruction ”
meant simply the acquirement of bogus elec
toral votes sufficient to overcome Northern ma
jorities, the suggestion was treated as sen
sational. Tijeremaudingof States solemnly
“ admitted ” to colonial vassalage if they
proved reluctant to submit to the Radical
yoke “ voluntarily,” was also predicted and
met with similar incredulity. This out
rage has been accomplished with an avowal
that the same power exists in respect to Stales
confessedly never out of the Union / What
does all this mean, but the proclamation of
a purpose on the part of the Radicals in
Congress to maintain power at all hazards
• while laughing at resistance ?
I have this moment received reliable in
formation that Tennessee (and any other of
the States lately engaged “in rebellion,”
which shall “ rebel ” against the “ Radical
ticket") will be tlfcated precisely after the
Georgia fashion. With (thus obtained) a
united South voting at the points of Grant’s
bayonets (aud it will be forced to vote to
order), the ruling faction would be able to
continue its despotism, though sustained
by only a fraction of the Northern people!
Undoubtedly, this game will be assayed—
and Northern imbeciles will murmur a dissent,
but It will not exceed a 'whisper. If the
country is ever to be redeemed, It will be by
other and more determined means. An
earnest man, while looking on, can but de
plore the shlllv-shaHf and honeyed terms
in which opposition to the current enormi
ties are coached in Congress. 'Democratic
Senators and Representatives sit in their
seats by sufferance, as it were, and seem to
accept as a favor the privilege of uttering
a syllable of qualified dissent. Better, in
deed, would it be to decline to open their
mouths— better, upon aU such questions, not
even to vote! Protest!
Pacts should always be stated In black
and white. Anything written in red ink of
coarse appears incredible. , } «, -

Wten the pure medicinal restorative, now so wide
ly known aa WOLFE’S •CHIEDAM BUNAPPS,
wn* introduced Into the world under ihe indorsement
of 4 000 leading members of the medical profession
some twen’y years ago, its proprietor was well aware
that he could not wholly escape the penalty attached
to all new and useful preparations. He therefore en
deavored to invest it with strongest possible safe
guards again- t counterfeiters, aud to render all at
tempts to pirate it difficult and dangerous It was
submitted to distinguished chemist: for auah sis, aud
prooouw spirits
tnred. Its purity and properties having bee 11 thus
ascertained, samples of the article were sent to ton
thousand physicians, including all the leading prac
titioners in the United Stales, for purposes of ex
periment. A circular, reane* ing a trial of the prapa
paration and r-port of the result, accompanied each
specimen. Four thousand of the most eminent med
ical men in the Union promptly responded. Then
opinions o! the article were unanimously favorable.
Such a preparation, they said, bad long been wanted
by the profession, as no re’lance could be placed on
the ordinary liquors of commerce, all of which were
more or less adulterated, and therefore unfit for medi
cal purposes. The p*-culia- excellence and strength
of the oil of juniper, which formed one of the principal
ingredients of the Schnapps, together with an un
alloyed character of the alcoholic element, give it, in
the estimation of the faculty, a marked superiority
over every other diffusive stimulant as a diuretic,
tonic and restorative.
The following are a few ot the testimonials to favor
of the Schnapps:
Mr. Udolpho Wolfe, 22 Beaver street, Mew York :
Dbar Sib : 1 feel bound to say that I regard your
Schnapps as betog in every respect pre-eminently
pure, and deserving of medical patronage. At aU
events, it is tbe purest possible article of Holland
Gin, heretofore unobtainable, and as such may he
safely prescribed by physicians.

Cdolpho Wdlft, Esq., Present:
Daaa Sir : I have made a chemical examination of
a sample of your Schiedam Schnapps, with the in
tent of determining if any foreign or injurious sub
stance ha 1 beon added to the simple distilled spirits.
The examination has resulted in the conclusion that
tbe sample contained no poisonons or harmful ad
mlx-nre. I have been unable to discover any trace of
the deleterious substances which are employed to the
adulteration of liquors. I would not hesitate to use
myself, or to recommend to others, for medicinal pur
poses, the Schiedam Schnapps, as an excellent and
unobjectionable variety of Gin.
Very respectfully, yours,
[Signed] CHAS. A. SEELY, Chemist.

Dbar Sir : I have submitted to chemical analysis

from a fresh package in your bonded warehouse, and
find, as before, that the spirituous liquor is free from
injurious ingredients or falsification ; that it has the
marks of being aged ad not recently prepared by
mechanical admixture of alcohol and aromatics.

To Jds. Buddie <6 Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Ghbtlihss : This is to certify that I have been fbr.j
years a sufferer, aud tried all the tonics I have heard {
of or seen advertised, with little or no relief from any
of them. 1 heard Hurley’s Bitters highly spoken of,
aud tried a bottle, with little faith to it hetore I com*
mcnced, and, to my surprise and joy, before I finished
one bottle 1 felt a great deal better, and firmly believe
that one or two occasions it was tbe means of saving ,
and prolonging my life. I conscientiously recommend
them to all sufferers as the best Bitters known, and
advise them always to ask for Dr. T. A. Hu-ley’s.and '
have no other. You can use this as you think proper;
if it will benefit others.
Yours, truly, etc.,
JOHN W. DIXON.

CAROLINA FERTILIZER.
Premiums Offered to the Planters of South and North Carolina,
Georgia and Alabama.
We wish to encourage the movement among Planters to increase the product of
their lands by better cultivation, and by the use of manures.
We think the poor lands of the South can be restored and made to produce abund
antly, while the qrops of good lands can be largely increased by the free use of the
Phosphates so providentially discovered in this State, from which the best of Fertilizers
are now made. POOR AND GOOD land cannot be made to yield equally. We pro
pose to extend an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to all, so far as the nature of the case per
mits. We therefore offer the following premiums, based upon INCREASED PRO
DUCTION over the NATURAL GROWTH of previous years from the same land with
out manure:
PRIZES FOR COTTON.
FIRST PRIZE-A GULLETT GIN OF
40 SAWS, or a Horse or Mule of same
value, and one of Dodge’s celebrated

production from five acres of land.
THIRD PRIZE—A SULKEY CULTIVA

its excellence on the basis of the analyste of Prof. Shepard.
Evidences .of the use of this Fertilizer, of the quantity of laud.cultivated, mode of
cultivation and weight of manure used, as well as of the result, must be furnished, cer
