FRIDAY MORNING, FEB. 4, 1870
Mishaps of Emigrants.— The
Hawkinsville Dispatch publishes a letter
from Capt. Norman McDuffie, who, with
several of his neighbors, recently left Pu
laski county for Texas. We make the fol
lowing extract. Messrs. Feltz aDd Pope
seem to have early experienced the cost of
their emigrant whistle, and doubtless think
they might have made a much more profit
able investment in old Georgia. The letter
bears date, Alexandria, La , January 10th :
Dear Bir : Our little colony is thus far
on the way to the promised land. All well
and in fine spirits, except J. W. Feltz, who
was fleeced of $2,000 in greenbacks at Or
leans. He was led off by a friend to see the
animals, and when they showed the ani
mals they made him show his money.—
They charged him $2,000, and he says to
me, If it had not been for a friend that roped
him iu, they would have takcu all he had.
D. B. Pope, an honest man of my colony,
was also fleeced of $725. He was led off by
a merchant going to the same county that
Pope was. He led Pope off, and handed
him S7OO in brass, for which Pope gave
him all the currency he had. He has not
seen him since.
These are all the mishaps that have hap
pened on our voyage.
To-day, ou this boat (Bart Able) there
are at least 500 emigrants. In that num
ber there Are not more than fifteen negroes.
Our crowd are from Pulaski, Wilcox,
Dooly, Houston, Monroe, Butts, Coweta,
Carroll, Muscogee, Walker, etc.
Not So Bad as Painted.— The Warren
ton Clipper corrects the “ raw-hend-nud
bloody-boues” representations made of
affairs in Warren county. It says:
Several of our exchanges represent our
county as being terror-stricken, citizens
fleeing, etc. No doubt these papers gain
their information from persons travelling
hurriedly through this section, and who
draw largely on' their imagination. Now,
when the facts are to the reverse, we can
see no good to result from misrepresenta
tions. We don’t think any one who has
read the Clipper can accuse us of being the
apologist of the military, but when we find
officers among them who discharge their
duty without allowing partisan feelings to
influence, them, we deem it our duty to
chronicle the fact. Some of the reports
does Major Kline, the commander of this
sub-district, injustice. His conduct and
official acts, so far as we have learned, have
been those of a gentleman and an officer, and
worthy the exemplary consideration of
some of his superiors.
There is some ground for the report that
some of our ciflfcens have left the county,
but eveu these have been enlarged and so
misrepresented that a false impression is
liable. Those that have gone were induced
to leave through other motives than fear of
the law or .terror of the military, and arc
ready, and will return, to answer any charge
brought against them whenever assured
that a trial—either civil or military—will
be granted them, and the prosecutor be
made to prosecute.
The remains of George Peabody were
subjected by Dr. Pavy, a distinguished
English physician, to a novel preservative
process, which consisted in first injecting
dll the arteries with a solution of arsenic
and corosive sublimate; and after the lapse
of twenty-four hours, with a saturated
solution of tanic acid. By these means
the softer -tissues are actually converted
into leather, and decomposition effectually
arrested.

BdT IMPORTANT.—THOSE WHO HAVE
attained to the greatest eminence In the science cf
Medicine, an and who have by a life-long study of, and
experience with, the human organism, obtained great
insight into the origin aad pathology of disease, are
yet, notwiths'ancUng all their profound an i learned
theories, confessedly groping (nthe datkas to
cause of any and all diseases that affect our race. But
this much has been clearly eluc'dated, and is become
an axiom with the learned profession, that by far the
greatest number of our alio ents aro directly traceable
to derangement of the d'gestive functions, and if
“good digestion wait on appetite,'’ health will be the
almost uniform result. Acting upon this axiom, the
inventor of DR. HURLEY’S CELEBRATED
STOMACH BITTERS has been eminently success
fill (judging fronMhe many testimonials that are con
stantly pouring in upon him through the mails and
press), in preparing a remedy to meet and “ nip in the
bud ” all this long list of obscure and distressing de
rangements that r< ndor “ life scarce worth the living."
We are glad to learn that the public here are be
ginning to appreciate these BITTERS upon their in
trinsic merits, and that they can he had everywhere.

To Jas. Huddle <t Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gentlemen ; This is to certify that I have beeu for
years a sufferer, and tried all the tonics 1 have heard
of or seen advertised, with little or do relief fibm any
of them. 1 beard Hurley’s Bitters highly spoken of,
and tried a bottle, with little faith in it before 1 com
menced, and, to my surprise and joy, before I finished
one bottle I felt a great deal better, and firmly believe
that one or two occasions it was the means of saving
and prolonging my life. I conscientiously recommend
them to all sufferers as the best Bitters known, and
advise them always to ask for Dr. T. A. Hu-ley’s, and
have no other. You can use this as yon think proper,
if it will benefit others.

my cough became less severe —the soreness of my

The foregoing analysis oi the Etlwan Fertilizer, No. 1, indicates a high proportion of Soluble
Phosphoric Acid, an indispensable element it* the production of fruitage for Cotton, Corn and
the Cereals generally, nod which, in this condition, acts promptly daring the first year. The
amount of Insoluble Phosphate of Lime which it contains—equal to 10.41 per cent—remains
in the soil, to undergo chemical re action favorable to a succeeding crop. It will rank there
fore, amongst the moat reliable of the class of Phosphate Manures.
- A. MEANS, Inspector.
N. B.—ETIWAN, No. 2, is same as No. 1, with Peruvian Guano added as ammonia.
