FRIDAY MORNING, MAR. 11, 1870
fFrom the Savannah Republican.
. Destructive Conflagration.
FIVE HUNDRED BALES OF COTTON BURNED.
About twelve o’clock last night, a Are
broke out in the store occupied by Messrs.
L. J. Guilmartin & Cos., commission mer
chants, cn Bay street, north side, between
Bull and Whitaker. The flames seemed to
spread quite rapidly, and in a short time
the whole interior of the building was on
Are. There were about five hundred bales
of cotton stored in the building, the great
er portion of which was doubtless de
stroyed or damaged by water.
Messrs. Guilmartin & Cos. arc insured in
R. H. Footman & Co.’s Agency, but to
what amount we could not learn. The
buildiutris one of the old Planters’ Bank
property, but recently purchased by
Messrs. Wilcox, Gibbs & Cos. The build
ing was fully covered by insurance.
The Are is supposed to have been the
work of an incendiary; matches having
been found at the door opening on River
street.
At oue time there was considerable appre
hension that the store formerly occupied
by Wm. M. Davidsou, in which, was stored
a number of buggies and a few barrels of
flour, would share the some fate, as it was
on flre| but the almost superhuman efforts
of our gallant firemen confined the flames
to the store of Messrs. Guilmartin & 00.
The store of Habersham & Cos. seemed at
one time to be in danger, as the wind was
blowing in that direction, but a few well
directed streams of water kept the fire from
extending any further that way.
The late hour at which we write pre
cludes the possibility of getting at the
exact loss sustained, but we will endeavor
to give it in our next issue. Messrs. Guil
martin & Cos. have the entire sympathy of
of our citizens, and it is sincerely hoped
that they will,.before many days, be able
to resume their business.
As we go to press, the fire is still burning,
but no further danger is apprehended.
Destructive Fire. —We regret to learn
that two stores in Lexington village, occu
pied by Messrs. Meetz, Caughman'& Cos.,
were totally destroyed by an incendiary
fire yesterday morning, about 4 o’clock.—
The stores were well stocked with goods,
and the loss will doubtless be heavy, as
they were only partially insured.
[ Columbia (8. 0.) Phctnix.
Fruit. —Upon a close examination, we
find the greater part of fruit in bloom at
the late freeze In February entirely de
stroyed. The greatest loss to us in this
section is the Summer peach. Taking our
own orchard as a test, we And very early
peaches now in full bloom and uninjured ;
Summer peach, blooms most dying or dead,
and but little fruit living; very late peaches
a little better. Other standard fruits not
blooming (with the exception of one silly
pear tree that never has paid for its room)
at the freeze, and hence not killed. The
common plum generally bids defiance to
cold weather. These we have not exam
ined. Should we be spared killing frosts
the present month there will be fruit enough
for all. —Central Georgian.
Death Before Matrimony. —A German
named Henry Hei merle, a resident of Hud
son, Hew York, was to have been married
to Amelia Klaussmann last Saturday even
ing, all the arrangements having been com
pleted tending to that happy result. The
friends and minister were In attendance at

the party separated. The next morning
the following note was found on the table

DISEASES OF THE KIDNEYS. AND
BLADDER.
Persons unacquainted with the structure and
functions of the Kidneys cannot estimate the
importance ol their healthy action.
Regular and sufficient action of the Kidneys
is as important, nay, even more so, than regu
larity of the bowels. The Kidneys remove
from the Blood those ettete matters which, if
permitted to remain, would speedily destroy
life. A total snspension of the urinary dis
charges will occasion death from thirty-six to
forty-eight hours.
When the Urine is voided in smull quanti

to Urinate more frequently than natural, or
when Hie Urine is high colored or scalding,
with weakness in the small of the back, it
should not be trifled with or delayed, but Kos

ETIWAN GUANOS'
SOLUBLE MANTJKEB.
AND
SULPHURIC ACID,
MANUFACTURED AT CHARLESTON.
r.'WS'*-;'*..' C; | . • , . ..
TJ NDER THE DIRECTION OF Dr. N. A. PRATT, CHEMIST FOR THE SULPHURIC
ACID AND SUPERPHOSPHATE COMPANY.
SOLUBLE PHOSPHORIC ACID, in the form of SOLUBLE PHOSPHATE OF LIME, or
DISSOLVED BONE PHOBPHATE, is the basis of all good Fertilisers, and these are valuable
ii the ratio of Soluble Phosphoric Acid which is in them.
The immense deposits of Phosphatic Guanos which ware discovered in 1867, in South Caro
lina, by Dr. PRATT, consists mainly of Insoluble Phosphate of Lime, which is made available as
a Fertiliser by being ground to powder, and reduced by Snlphuric Acid to such a condition as
t> l make its insoluble phosphate soluble in water, a.ud 'thus made capable of being taken up by
g -owing plants. The insoluble phosphate found in any Commercial Fertilizer is of no more
v due to the plant than the original phosphate rock. The greater the proportion of thl6 soluble
pjosphate which any fertilizer contains, the less the quantity required per a.'re, and consequent
b the cheapest Fertilizer is that Containing the highest par centage of Soluble Phosphate.
Impressed with these truths, the SULPHURIC ACID AND SUPERPHOSPHATE COM
PANY have erected at Charleston the first extensive Acid Chambers South of Baltimore, and
i e able to offer to Planters the HIGHEST PER CENTAGE OF SOLUBLE PHOSPHATE OF
L tME known in any market.
Their Fertilizers are offered under two forms :
1. ETIWAN, No.’ I.—PURE SOLUBLE PHOSPHATE, guaranteed to contain 34 per cent
oi Dissolved Boae Phosphate of Lime, S6O per ton; 10 per cent, discount for cash.
2. ETIWAN, No. 2. PERUVIAN SUPERPHOSPHATE, guaranteed to contain 20 pei
c> Dt. of Dissolved Bone Phosphate, and 1% to 3 per cent, of Ammonia, with a sufficient ad
d:iion of Peruvian Guano to adapt it to all crops, £7O per ton; 10 per cent, discount for cash.

A. MEANB, Inspector, Savannah, Chatham county , Ga.
The foregoing analysis of the Etiwan Fertilizer, No. 1, indicates a high proportion of Solu,b&
Phosphoric Acid, an indispensable element in the production of fruitage for Cotton, Corn and
thCereals generally, and which, in this condition, acts promptly during the first year. The
amount at Insoluble Phosphate of Lime which it pontains—equal to 10.41 per cent—remains
in the soil, to undergo chemical re action favorable to a succeeding crop. It will rank, there
fore, amongst the most reliable of the class of Phosphate Mannres.
A. MEANS, Inspector.
Nl B. -ETIWAN, No. 2, is same as No. 1, with Peruvian Gnano added as ammonia.
IJV. A. PRATT, Chemist.
. WE ALSO OFFER
DISSOLVED BONE, of high grade, lor Plapters or Manufacturers, who may desire to
mix into any other compost, and we suggest that this is the best and cheapest mothod for man
ufacturers to transport the Sulphuric Acid contained in the mixture. Will be soIU at a fixed
rate for each per centage. j. _ _
