FRIDAY MORNING. APRIL 1,1870
Colonization in North Carolina.—
The Nov York Post reports from that city
an effort to effect a settlement ,in Hyde
county, thirty miles northeast of Wash
ington, N. 0., Which lies between and bor
ders the Punso and Alligator rivers, and
the canals of tne same name constructed in
their neighborhood. The tract purchased
by the company comprises 50,000 acres.
The laud is sold to colonists at $5 an acre,
but to avoid monopolies, not more than
200 acres are sold to one person. Twenty
five per cent, of the purchase money is paid
in cash, and the balance in five years.
The title has been given, by the State of
North Carolina.
Five thousand acres have thus far been
sold to fifty families, whose heads have ta
ken an average of one hundred acres each.
They aro from Brooklyn, Newark, New
Haven and New York City. Few are
farmers. They comprise mechanics, store
keepers and clerks. A party of six men
went last week to erect a building for the
reception of the pioneers, and about twen
ty-five more leave this evening in the
schooner Hattie Low, from pier 36 East
ylver, to aid In the various preparatory op
erations. No women or children will go
at present.
The company have erected a saw mill,
from which they furnish lumber to set
tlers at sl2 a.thousand feet, and shingles at
from $4 to $5 a thousand. It is the inten
tion of the company to rnn the Hattie Low
regularly between New York city and the
settlement. The Pungo river is found to
be the most navigable of the two border
ing streams. It affords a depth of nine
feet at the dock.
Reign of Terror in North Carolina.
—The Wilmington Journal says the reign
of terror in Robeson couuty still continues.
From authentic advices just received we
learn that . Henry Berry Lowry and his
gang of outlaws and murderers are still
disturbing the good people of that county
in « manner which beggars all description.
Their depredations are committed in so
bold and outrageous a manner that there is
no guarantee of safety, and human life is
continually in jeopardy. Citizens have ac
tually grown afraid to venture from home,
and so great is the danger that it is found
almost impossible to bring the militia of
the county into actual service. Quiet and
inoffensive men are shot at, both at their
homes and on the highways, and even in
the town of Lumberton few'feel safe.—
Barns and cribs .all over the country are
robbed of their contents, and private dwell
ings are entered afid ransacked with impu
nity, and in ohe or two instances robbers
have been discovered under beds in the
chambers of residences. For several nights
recently the whole town of Lumberton has
been under arms; and there is no certainty
on going to sleep at night that one does
not have his throat cut ere morning.
Business of the Georgia Road.—Dur
ing the past week the business of the Geor

due to the energy and ability of General

Gshtlbmbv : This is to certify that I have been for
years a sufferer, and tried all the tonics I have heard
of or seen advertised, with little or no relief from any
of them. 1 beard Hurley’s BitUrs highly spoken of,
and tried a bottle, with little faith in it belore I com
menced, and, to my surprise and joy, before I finished
one bottle I felt a great deal better, and firmly believe
that one or two occasions it wa» the means of saving
and prolonging mv life. I conscientiously recommend
tbem to all sufferers as the best Bitters known, »nd
advise them always to ask for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and
have no other. You can use this as you think proper,
If it will benefit others.

To Dr. That. A. Hurley:
Sir : I deem It an act ol justice to you to slate that
in the month oi February last 1 had a severe attack
of Inflammatory rheumatism, which completely pros

afflicted. I was so reduced that tt was with the great

your Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com
menced taxing it. I found that 1 began to improve—
my cough became less severe—the soreness of my
lnngs and breast gradually subsided—my rheumatic
pains less acute. I attribute this mainly to your Sar
saparilla. I have now been taking it for over two
months; have taken in all five bottles. Its effects
have been most sati factory to me, and I advise others
similarly afflicted to give you a trial.

DISEASES OF THE BLOOD.
“ The life of the flesh is in the blood,” is a
Scriptural maxim that science proves to be
true. The people talk of bad blood, as the
cause of many diseases, and like many popular
opinions this of bad blood is louuded in truth.
The symptoms of bad blood are usually quite
plain—bad Digestion—causes imperfect nutri
tior and consequently the calculation is feeble,
the soft tissues lose their tone and elasticity,
and the tongue becomes pale, broad, aud fre
quently covered with a pasty, white coat. This
condition soon shows itself in roughness of the
skin, then in eruptive and ulcerative dis
eases, and when long continued, results in
serious lesions of the Brain, Liver, Lungs, cr
urinary apparatus. Much, very much, suffer
ing is caused by impure blood. It is estimated
by some that one-flfth of the human family are
affected with scrofula in some form.
When the Blood is pure you are not so lia
ble to any disease. Many imparities of the
Biood arise from impure diseases of large cities.
Eradicate every impurity from the fountain of
life, and good spirits, fair skin and vital
strength will return to yon.

Is a remedy ol Wonderful Efficacy in the cure
ot diseases of the Kidneys and Bladder. In
these Affections it is as near a specific as any
remedy can be. It does its work kindly, silent
ly and surely. The Relief which it affords is
bath certain and perceptible.
DISEASES OF THE KIDNEYS AND
BLADDER.
Persons unacquainted with the structure and
functions of the Kidneys cannot estimate the
importance of their healthy action.
Regular and sufficient action of the Kidneys
is as important, nay, even more so, than regu
larity of the bowels. The Kidneys remove
from the Blood those effete nmtteis which, if
permitted to i emaiu, would speedily destroy
file. A total suspension of the urinary dis
charges will occasion death from thirty-six to
forty-eight hours.'
When the Urine is voided in small quanti
ties at the time, or when there is a disposition
to Urinate more frequently than natural, or
when the Urine is high colored or scalding,
with weakness in the small of the back, It
should not be trifled with or delayed, but Kos
koo should be taken at once to remedy the dif
ficulty, before a lesion of the organs takes
place. Most of the diseases of the Bladder
originate from those of the Kidneys, the Urine
being imperfectly secreted in the Kidneys
prow irritating to the Bladder and Urinary
passages. When we recollect that medicine
never reaches tho Kidneys except through the
general circulation of the Blood, we see how
necessary it is to keep the Fountain of Lile
Pure.

Almost nine-tenths ot our people suffer from

to its concomitant evils ol mental depression,

health. Thousands are suffering to-day with
broken-down ' nervous systems, and, unfortu
nately, tobacco, alcohol, late honrs, over-work,
mental and are causing diseases of
the nervous system to increase at a fearful
ratio.
The symptoms to which diseases of the nerv
ous system give rise may be stated as follows :
A dull, heavy feeling in the head, sometimes
more or less severe pain or headache: Periodi
cal Headache, Dizziness, Noises or Ringing in
the Hc-id ; Confusion of Ideas; Temporary Loss
of Memory; Dejection of Spirits; Starting

ETIWAN GUANOS,
SOLUBLE MANTJBEB.
- AND
SULPHURIC ACID,
MANUFACTURED at CJIA}RDK?3TON.
XJ NDBR THE DIRECTION OF Dk. N. A. PRATT, CHEMIST FOR THE SULPHURIC
ACID AND SUPERPHOSPHATE COMPANY.
SOLUBLE PHOSPHORIC ACID, in the form of SOLUBLE PHOSPHATE OF LIM E, or
DISSOLVED BONE PHOSPHATE, is the basis of all good Fertilizers, and thews are valuable
in the ratio of Solnbie Phosphoric Acid which is in them.
The immense deposits ofPhospbatic Guanos which were discovered in 1887, in South Caro
lina, by Dr. PRATT, consists mainly of Insoluble Phosphate of Lime, which is made available as
a Fertilizer by being ground to powder, and reduced by Snlpburic Acid to such a condition- as
to its insoluble phoßphato soluble ip water, and thus.ruade capable of being taken up by
growing plants. The insoluble phosphate inland in any Commercial Fertilizer is of no more
value to the plant than the original phosphati rock. The greater the proportion of this soluble
phosphate Which any fertilizer contains, the lfess the quantity required per a re, and consequent
ly the Cheapest Fertilizer is that cbnttiining toe highest per centage of 8o!nble Phosphate.
Impressed with these troths,'the SULPHURIC ACID AND SUPERPHOSPHATE COM
PANY" have erected at Charleston the first extensive Acid Chambers South of Baltimore, and
are able to offer to Planters tho HIGHEST PER CENTAGE OF SQLUBLE PHOSPHATE OF
LIME known iu auy market.
Their Fertilisers are offered under two forms :
1. ETIWAN, No. I.—PURE SOLUBLE PHOSPHATE, guaranteed to contain U per cent
of Dissolved Bone Phosphate of Lime, S6O per ton ; 10 per cent, discount for cash.
3. EHWAN, No. SUPERPHOSPHATE, guaranteed to contain 20 per
cent, of Dissolved Bone Phosphate, and I}4 to 3 per cent, of Ammonia, with a sufficient ad
dition of Peruvian Guano to adapt it to ail crops, S7O per ton; Iff per cent, discount for cash.

A. MEANS, Inspector, Savannah, Chatham county, Ga.
The foregoing analysis of the Etiwan Fertilizer, No. 1, indicates a high proportion of Solubta
Phosphoric Acid, an indispensable elemeut in the of fruitage for Cotton, Corn and
the Cereals generally, and which, in this condition, actß promptly during the first yeas. The
amount of Insoluble Phosphate of Lime which it cootaioAi-equal to 10.41 per cent—remains
in the soil, to undergo chemical re action favorable to a.succeeding crop. It wilipank, there
fore, amongst the most reliable of the class of Phosphate Manures.
-A.. bnc.A.JSj'isS, Inspector.
N. B.—ETIWAN, No. 2, is same as No. 1, with Peruvian Guano added a» ammonia.
IST. A. Y'K.A.Xr, Chemist.
WE ALSO OFFER
DISSOLVED BONE, of high grade, for Planters or Manufacturers, who may desire to
mix into auy other compost, and we suggest that this is the best and cheapest method for man
ufacturers to transport the Sulphuric Acid contained in the mixture. Will be sold at a fixed
rate for each per centage.
