State Items.
There are now some 200,000 bricks per
day m inufactured in and near Atlanta,
and the supply does not equal the demand.
The Covington Examiner represents
crops in that vicinity in a favorable condi
tion, except in some localities, where the
grass rales the cotton.
The Israelites of Atlanta have purchased
the Second Market House, for $7,250, as a
site for the erection of anew synagogue.
The wheat crop of Troup county is turn
ing out belter than expected. Farmers
are astonished at the turn out of the thresh
ings.
The Trustees ol Oglethorpe College have
purchased the Lyons House in Atlanta, for
the use of the College, at a cost of $20,000.
This ignores the donation of land by Col.
Holcombe as a buiidlug site for the College.
Last Monday afternoon a tornado visited
the farm of Chas. A. Peabody, in Lee coun
ty, about four miles from Columbus, which
tore up oats and cotton by the roots, aud
played havoc with the timber.*
Last Sunday afternoon the depot in
Thomson was struck by lightning, aud one
wall of the ticket office was terribly shat
tered, and the plastering and splinters
thrown all over the building. Strange to
say, however, nothing in the depot was
injured save the wall.
The Herman Livingston left Savannah on
Thursday with the largest cargo she has
ever taken from that port, and a very re
makable one for this season of the year* It
consisted of 1,531 bales cotton, 25 bales
wool, 17 bales waste, 50 casks clay, 130
hides, 85 barrels watermelons, 317 packages
vegetables, and 173 packages of merchan
dise. She also took 58 cabin and 3 steerage
passengers.
The destructive tornado, which destroy
ed the cottou gin buildings of W. G. Clem
ons & Cos., opposite Chandler’s mill, twen
tv-flve miles east of Columbus, resulted in
jfie breaking of the tjilgtj of a colored
wqrkman in the factory by the falling of a
jiraber. It is also reported that at appoint
tijree miles west of Chandler’s mill a cabin
was blown down and a woman and two or
three children killed.
The Covington Enterprise reports that
on Monday afternoon last j), very destruc
tive 4aM storm passed oyer the southern
portion of Newton county, injuring the
prospect for the growing crop of corn and
potton at least from one-third to a half on
the plantations which were in its course,
fhc same evening another cloijd visited
the vicinity of the Georgia Railroad bridge
pver the Alcova, though it was not so de
structive in as that which passed
farther South.
The Hawkiusville Dispatch reports the
arrest, on last Sunday, near Gum Swamp,
of a young man with several aliases, but
lately known as Charles Roberson, who
was charged with robbing, on the 24th ult.,
Mr. John Buchanan, of Irwin county, of
between $350 and SSOO In silver. He had
lived with Mr. 8., and had got married at
his house only four days previous to the
theft. About slßl of the stolen money was
recovered, and the prisoner remanded to
Irwin county, the place where the offense
Was committed, for examination.

The Old Master and h;s Former
Slave. —Amos McMullen and Bill Hum
phreys (colored) were sentenced Monday to
the penitentiary for two years each. After
Renos’ sentence had been passed upon him,
|ie went to Col. McMullen, his old faster,
and asked him for money. 'Tears at opce
filled the old man’s eyes, and he responded
liberally to the request of his former slavp.
This is a simple illustration of the attach
ment still existing in the breast of the old
Southern master for the negro that is now
sought to be used as an instrument for his
destruction. —Greenville (Ala) Advocate.
A Woman Wins a Medical Prize.— lt
is recorded as a significant fact that while
some of the doctors are disputing whether
women have intellect enough to master the
principles of medical practice, one of the
latter sex has carried off the prizes offered
by the NeW York Medical Gazette for the
best clinical reports. These articles were
gent in signed by the initials, M. M. W.,

Dr. Lawrence— Dear Sir: Your Koskoo

general health greahy improved. It certainly
saved her much suffering, and perhaps her life
I regard Koskoo a specific for all scrofulous
