Cot. Ames’ Circus and Menagerie.—
The grand cavalcade of Ames’ circus and
menagerie, comprised of a superb display
of horse flesh, glittering paraphernalia, bril
liant wagons, camels in ornamental over
coats, led by a band-chariot of accomplished
musicians, was the sensation yesterday
afternoon, and served to quicken the desire
ever active among our. circus-goers to wel
come this mammoth exhibition now on its
third visit to Augusta.
The immense pavilion, last night, was
thronged, evidencing the confidence felt that
the exhibition would measure the full de
gree of excellence promised.
The inspection of the menagerie, prior to
the exercises of the ling, afforded tliF
utmost satisfaction to the large concourse.
The collection of animals is large and of
the most striking interest. The little lion
whelps came in for a large share of admi
ration.
The circus programme was full in variety
and excellent in all the appointments, aud
was executed in the most graceful, daring
and grand manner by the accomplished
riders, acrobats and gymnasts constituting
the array of talent which Col. Ames has
combined in the make-up of the great show
with which lie is delighting the Southern
people. That excellent pair of Clowns,
Happy Jack Lawton and George Murray,
contributed a perpetual flow of good humor
and meiiiiaciit The double somersault
leaps of Messrs, A. Gonzales and Win. Wil
son were more than grand in their execu
tion. The riding of Mr. Fred D. Barclay
Wasa decided feature In the entertainment,
his horse-back somersaults winning de
served applause.
As usual, the daring performance of Herr
Lengel with Ills animal pets concentrated
the interest of the entire assemblage.
Without the space to detail the numerous
other attractions, we can only say that the
entire exhibition is meritorious, and will
please alike the children, tha ladies and the
gentlemen who inay attend.
Per formauces this afternoon and to
night. Os course, all Augusta and his wife
and children will not miss this opportunity
to witness one of the best exhibitions of the
character which is now travelling.

OHKflt' I>Kt,F.fIATK9 ANO THE TOURNAMENT
Kn hi in’s. —The joint committees from City
Council, Fair Association and Board of
Trade, have appointed committees on the
various departments connected with the
forthcoming ball. These gentlemen have
gone to work with avlm and energy worthy
of the occasion. 'l'hecommittees on prem
ises, decorations, supper, Invitations, mu
sic, &c., have not been idle, and already
each department is thoroughly organized.
We will astonish some of our readers when
we say that the cost of this entertainment
will not tall short of ten thousand dollars.
But the several bodies having the matter
in charge have concluded to tender to our
guests upon the occasion an entertainment
that shall not Be eclipsed, iu point of style
and elegance, by any ever held in our State.
We are glad that this is the desire of the
gentlemen in charge of the affair, as we
want to show our visitors what Augusta
can do when she tries. Our reputation in
one respect is sure to be sustained —that is
the proverbial celebrity of our city for
smiting the hearts of all visitors with her
display of fair women, to say nothing of
her brave men. The ball comes off Thurs
day night, the 27tli.
The New Dredge Boat. —The dredge
boat in process of construction at the canal
basin for the past two months, is almost
completed, and will soon be ready to com
mence operations in dredging the canal, a
work of the greatest importance to the
manufacturing interests of the city, In view
of the largely increased volume of water
which a thorough dredging of the canal
will secure. AH the machinery, and the
engine requisite for the operations of the
boat, has been placed lu position, and it
only remains to complete the rigging of the
crane, already hoisted into its place. The
boat is of the most substantial build, and.
has been constructed by Mr. B. M. Doug
lass, of Connecticut, who gives evidence of
enlarged experience and consummate skill iu
this class of work. It is in contemplation
to have a test trial of the machine on next
Tuesday or Wednesday, in presence of his
Honor Mavor Allen, members of the City
Council, and others interested, in order to
develop its capacity for the work for which
it is designed.
Death of an Old Citizen. It is om
melancholy province, this morniug, to an
nounce the death of au old and highly in
spected citizen of Augnsta, Mr. Isaac 1.
Heard, who died at his residence in this
city yesterday morning. For many years
Mr. Heard has been prominently connected
with the commercial interests of Augusta
as a cotton a ud*com mission merchant, and
enjoyed the highest confidence and esteem
of a large circle of friends, for his sterling
commercial integrity and excelent Christian
qualities. He had been in extreme feeble
health for several months previous to his
death, suffering from disease of the heart.

Tribute to Gen. U. E. Lee.— By order
of Chief Euglueer Bryson, at the request of
bis Honor Mayor Allen, the different fire
bells iu the city will be tolled at Intervals
of five minutes, between the hours of 10,
a - m.,aud 12, m,, to-day, In respect to the
memory of Gen. R. E. Lee. ;
Hte H4ior Mayor Alien also requests
the citizens to close their respective places
of business duriug the day, and that the
bells of chnrche3 and other public build
ings be tolled from 10 o’clock, a. m., to
12 o’clock, m.
This well conceived and appropriate
testimonial will, we feel assured, be re
ligiously observed by our citizens in the
consecration of a day to the memory of our
departed soldier chieftain and noble ex
emplar of Christian virtue, whose death has
stricken the hearts of the Southern people
with such overwhelming grief.
Outrageous Conduct of a Jail Guard.
—A dispatch to the Charleston New i states
that on Wednesday, at Edgefield Court

A. Glover, but foitunately the shot failed
to take effect. Mr. Glover, in self-defense,
fired four shots at the negro, hitting three
times ami severely wounding him. The
militia afterwards made threats of violence
against Mr. Glover’s friends. The whites
dared them to art, but. they declined doing
so.

A Falsehood.
There was an article, taken from
the Tarboro (North Carolina) South
erner, published in the Constitutionalist
of last Tuesday morning, which stated that
the ticket agent of DeHaven’s circus had
“ knowingly and deliberately palmed off at
this place (Tarboro) and Rocky Mount an
immeuse amount of counterfeit money of
all denominations." This statement is an
unmitigated lie, and the writer of the article
was either grossly Imposed upon by some
malignant scoundrel, or else has been
guilty of knowingly publishing a vile
slander upon au upright and honorable
gentleman. Dellaven’s circus remained
for four or five days within striking distance
of Tarboro, and had there been any truth In
the statement published a week afterwards
certainly the party charged with passing
such au immense amount of counterfeit
money would have been arrested. The
fact that DeHaven’s circus did not adver
tise in the Southerner may have had some
thing to do with the publication of the
lying paragraph. The ticket agent of our
company Is George W. Zebold, a young
man from Cincinnati, of the highest char
acter and responsibility, and, iu that city,
It would be entirely unnecessary to contra
dict such a slander. The Mayor and other
prominent gentlemen of Cincinnati will
vouch for his good character wheuevercall-.
ed upon. A number of advertising cards
for this circus and the St. James Hotel in
Washington, which are gratuitously dis
tributed, aud which could not deceive a
five years’old child, furnished the only
foundation for the publication of this in
famous falsehood.
C. McCumbeb,
General Agent DeHaven’s Circus.
