Condition op Affairs in South Caro
lina. —The Charleston News, of yesterday,
contains the following special dispatches
from Washington and Columbia:
Washington, October 26. —T0-day, a
delegation sent by Governor Scott, consist
insr of State Treasurer Parker and State
Auditor Tomlinson, had an interview with
President Grant.
The President, after listening to the ac
counts given by Messrs. Parker and Tom
linson of the disturbance at Laurens, re
plied that he had already notified Governor
Scott, bv telegraph, that he should have all
the troops he wanted for South Carolina.
Senator T. J. Robertson, who Was also
sent on by Governor Scott, urges that more
troops be furnished, and charges that the
troubles arise from the attempts of the Re
formers to destroy the ballot boxes.
Columbia, October 26— Rumors which
reach this city from the counties of Union
and Chester indicate that the Laurens
troubles are extending towards Chester.
Governor Scott gives further assurances
ot his intention to disarm all the State
troops, but the order has not yet been
issued.
Grant's Late Present. —The corre
spondent of the Baltimore Gazette speaks
ot a hog that was sent to the President,
from somewhere in the West, by some
“loil” admirer ot that functionary. Here
is the writer’s account of the animal and its
journeyings:
“ It was sent to his Excellency, as ap
pears upon a review of the mass of papers
before me, from Kentucky, through the
Post Office Department, and was returned
through the same source to Jesse Grant, at
Covington, not many miles from where it
was pigged, at an expense to the United
States of some S2,CjO. 4nd this is what is
called “ economy ” in the Radical journals.
If 1 am pushed upon this point, I will giv*
names, and am rather anxious to bo
* pushed.’ ”
Shot.— We understand a difficulty oc
curred at Georgetown, Ga., on Monday
last, between R. J. Moses. Jr., a young
lawyer from this city, and Maj J. T. Flewel
len, a planter of Qnitman county, in which
the former was shot and slightly wounded

About a Baby Show.
now THE MATTER WAS MANAGED IN MEM
PHIS—^TWENTY-FOUR MOTHERS COMPETE
FOB THE PRIZE.
To give an idea of bow a “ Baby* Show”
is done «p, we copy the following from the.
Memphis Avalanche, of the 15th instant,
describing a baby show recently held in
that city: It may that the numerous
doting mothers and paps, of our city will
desire JtQ get up a similar parade of infantry,
as a sequel to ouf present grand exposition
of agricultural products, mechanical in
genuity and art creations, hence we present
the following schedule upon which it might
be run:
Afler nurses and babies had ail been col
lected in rear of the judges’ stand, the
Secretary called them into the arena in the
order in which they had been entered, and
Ihe babies belonging to the twenty-seven
Indies were carried into the ring for the in
spection of the bachelor judges. Ringed
in front of the northern grand stand stood
the nurses, with their little charges in their
arms or in petite carriages, and the sight
was a peculiar one. There were babies of
all kinds, and of all ages, that is to say. of
a’ 1 months undej; twelve, for Wheeler,
Dickens & Cos., in presenting the beautiful
little perambulator, had distinctly bar
gained that it should be presented “ to the
finest baby under one year o and on exhibi
tion at this Fair.” The blue-eyed blondes
were in the majority, although there were
many brunettes, dark-colored and placid.
The boys seemed to be livelier than the
girls, and laughed and “ crowed’’ in a man
ner that was delightful to behold. The
mammas tried every subterfuge to make
their babies smile, laugh and crow, and
sundry comfits and cakes were called into
requisition. One blue-eyed lad of about ten
mouths was very attractive, and his ( flirts
to swallow a scarlet worsted ball four
inclies-in diameter excited universal ad
miration. The task of the Judges was no
ordinary one, but they faced the music like
men, and gazed the juveniles nearly out’of
countenance while examining their “points.”
Health, strength, “ heft” and good looks
were all taken into account, and the judges
moved silently and steadily along the line,
their every motion and every v\ord being
eagerly watched by nurse, papa and mamma
-Bome of the babi- s started at the portly
figure of Mr. Hamilton, as he marched at
the head of his forces, and looked as if they
had a slight glimmering of what it was ail
about, and they looked up smilingly, while
others presented sombre faces, with tears
in their eyes and mouths all a-pout. It
was indeed an interesting sight, and many
broke through the rope-guards and eagerly
rushed into the ring, as if to look upon a
baby was not an everyday occurrence.
After the judges had carefully scanned the
groups, they retired for consultation, and
then ordered the following babies, accord
ing to numbers as given above, to be sepa
rated from the geueral group : Nos 3,4, 6,
19, 25 and 26, belonging lespectivcly to
Mrs. J.’O. Johnson, Mrs. R. W. Ainslic,
Mrs. Johu Mi cln 11, Mrs. L. McGuire,Mrs.
H. Cavan and Mrs. Joseph Musso.” The
judges took another fond look at the fortu
nate half dozen, and again retired for con
sultation. They seemed to have nC-arl/all
agreed on the same baby, for the consulta
tion was brief, and Dr. Perkins, the super
intendent of the areua, came forward, took
little Mary Ainslie in Ids arfns, attached
to her right arm the bine’ fibhon, pjaced
her In the prize baby carriage, and Col. J.
G. Ballentlue, grand marshal, gallantly
wheeled

Mr. Rowers lives near Columbus, Ohio,
arid has cultivated a consuming affection
for pets. Among other pleasing attractions
which this peculiar characteristic has addl
ed to Mr. Bowers’ homestead is a bear.
Mr. Bowers had a six years’ old sou the
other day, but the little fellow attempted
to establish fraternal relations with the
other pet, and the creature, in a sort of
playful ecstacy, reduced the child to fiddle
strings, or something of about equal di
mensions. The Bowers that kucw that
bear will know him no more. In fact, Mt.
Bowers can’t bear pets of any kind any
more, and would probably dispose of his
choice collection of pinthers, polecats, rat
terriers, rattlesnakes and things at a ridicu
lous sacrifice.

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
NOR PVBIPYISG THE BtOOW.
The reputation this cx-
cellent medicine enjoys,
is derived from its cures,
Wk many of which are truly
p*lls=sSp marvellous. Inveterate
rfr . Haas 7 cases of Scrofulous dis
nr ,m ease, where the system
seemed saturated with
corruption, have been
BSe2s*_J' a purified and cured by it.
ro *JJ lon9 a fi < ' c t'°ns and
lous contamination until
they were painfully afflicting, have been radically
cured in such great numbers in almost every sec
tion of tho country, that the public scarcely need to
be informed of its virtues or uses.
Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt
tenant of the organism undermines the constitution,
andinvites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, either on the
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber,
cles may be suddenly deposited in the lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in the liver, or it ’ shows
its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer
ations on some part of the body. Hence the occa
sional use of a bottle of this Sarsaparilla is ad
visable, even whep no active symptoms of disease
appear. Persons afflicted with the following com
plaints generally find immediate relief, and, al
length, cure, by the use of this SARSAPARXZ
XA: St. Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipelas,
Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Bead, Ringworm,
Sore Eyes, Sore Ears, and other eruptions ov
visible forms of Sct'ofulous disease. Also in the
more concealed forms, as Dyspepsia, Dropsy,
Heart Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, Feurafgia,
and the various Ulcerous affections of the muscu
lar and nervous systems.
Syphilis or Venereal and Mercurial Diseases
are cured by it, though a long time is required for
subduing these obstinate maladies by any medicine.
But long continued use of this medicine will cure
the complaint. Leucorrhtea or Whites, Uterine
Ulcerations, and Female Diseases, are com
monly soon relieved and ultimately cured by its
purifying and invigorating effect. Minute Direc
tions for each case are found in our Almanac, sup
plied gratis. Rheumatism and Gout, when
