Jn Chicago the inexorable degrees of fashion make it imperative on dogs of good family to wear black and fed promenade blankets, and to have the leading strings attached to the left side of the collar. ®ri-U)celUn .Constitutionalist. (Prom the Wilmington, (N. C.) Journal. A Day of Retribution in the Old North State. One of the most striking features of the late State Fair, none the less pleasing, how ever, because so plainly manifest was the marked change in the character of the people present. Carpet-baggers and scalawags were at a discount, and for the first time since the war, showed some sign of con sciousness of their own utter vileness and moral leprosy, or at least, a consciousness of the detestation with which they are universally regarded by the true people of North Carolina. It was a good thing to be a North Carolinian and to be there.— The reunion of old friends was, Indeed, most pleasant. The personal gratification, however, though great, was not the only cause for congratulations in the meeting of friends who, since their last parting, had been confined In vile, filthy dungeons, aud had even been subjected to the halter itself, who had indeed, been subjected to every danger to which life, liberty and property could be exposed. Ninety days prior thereto. W. W. lloldeu was, by the help of Richmond M. Pearson and on the in stigation of John Pool, an absolute irre sponsible monarch in North Carolina. By authority of this criminal, W. W. Holden, men were arrested and deprived of proper ty, and put in jail or hung, as to him or his minions seemed best. The same guil ty. traitorous, usurping criminal, W. W. Holden, was upon the fair ground, aud yet, in spite of all his fresh crimes anil sur rounded by his st.il 1 smarting victims, he was unharmed ! The only vengeance tak en upon him was to leave him to the soli tary compauionship of his own upbraiding conscience, too low, too degraded, too de spised for even sycophantic flattery to fawn upon!, What a commentary upon the law-abiding character of the people of North Carolina! Chief Justice Pearson and Senator John Pool were uot present to support their compeer in villainy. If there had been honor among villains gen erally, as there is said to be among thieves, Chief Justice Pearson and Senator Pool would uot. have allowed Gov Holden to bear alone the brunt of the defeat in the late battle against honor and patriotism, and sworn duty which they had made com mon cause. Squares. 1 Weak. 2 Week*. J» Weeks. I Month. !2 Montis. 1 3 Months -4 Months, jf. Month* But though our people were thus quiet and peaceable and law-abiding, it is by no means_to be Interred that it is their inten tion to allow these guilty wretches to es cape punishment. John Pool may be be yond our reach. His infamy can, however, be made manifest to the world by a.resolu tion of our Legislature reciting all his high crimes and misdemeanors, and asking him, for the honor of North Carolina, to resign his place as Senator. He will not resign, nor wIH bis compeers of the United States Senate convict, him on impeachment or expel him, although the necessary proof might he piled mountain high, hut we can forever disgrace him before the whole American people. Chief Justice Pearson -has, it is said, been publicly intoxicated, and this alone is sufficient to insure certain conviction and speedy punishment. His other crimes will not. tend to raise up friends to protect him. Governor Holden’s fate is fixed. It is the unchangeable verdict of the people that, he be driven from the Governor’s chair, and declare 1 forever incapable of holding office iu North Carolina. It seems to be the universal sentiment that our great August victory-would not be complete ; that the peace and quiet that lias r< -<•»*»t,ty prevailed wdm.Tnol the porma mently assured, unless all these things were done. There was a general feeling that the dawn of anew era of law and confidence was at hand. It was the exist ence of this feeling that brought to Raleigh so many real representative North Caro linians, many of t hem who on the day of election felt Uiat any attempt to exercise the right of suffrage would tie resisted by bayonets; some of them men who were actually in prison, alt of them men who, upon the oaths of perjured negroes and no less perjured white men, or without any oath at all, were liable to be arrested and hung-by the neck until dead, or until it pleased Holden’s soldiers to cut them down. These were the men who, in three short months, could assemble in the broad light of day at the capital of the Stale and under t he very eye of the Governor, anti congratu late each other, and denounce in plain, un measured terms the tyranny of the Gov ernor and his accomplices In crime, and openly to declaretheir purpose to take such trn ans as the law placed in their hands to Insure the merited punishment. This on the one side. Oil the other it must tie borne iu mind that, Bergen was actually in jail, and Kirk in the custody of the law, and Holden powerless to lift even so much ns the weight ot his finger in their defense! What a con trast ! Verily it was a good thing to be there! Carpet-baggers and scalawags, your punishment draweth nigh k Had we ever doubted the intelligence or the courage of the people, or their capacity for self government, we could never do so again. Had we ever lost, faith in a Democratic form of government it would now be firmly re-established. The Grand Central Hotel.— Among the .most striding types of the progress of the age is the development of palatial hotel enterprises. New York has just nshere I in anew triumph in this particular. The G rand Cejitpil Hotel, situated on Broadway, midway between the up town and down town hotels, rears its magnificent marble front and swallows up almost an entire block. Only opened, as it were, on yester day, it has become already crowded with guests from every part of the couu ry. As vou enter its magnificent portals, the bril liant coup (V util exceeds any thing yet pro duced in this country or the world. One becomes absolutely confused with the sur rounding magnificence. It has to be seen to be appreciated. The Grand Central bears about the same relation to other first class- hotels as'the Great Eastern did to other first-class ocean steamers. With be tween one and two hundred rooms more than any other hotel on this-continent, the Grand Central is the colossus of the age.— In all the appointments everything is fully np to the mark for a first class New York city hotel. The carpets, furniture, parlors, linen; and ali the et cetera , are gorgeous. The genial proprietor, Mr. 11. L. Powers, of hotel renown, whose remarkable ad ministrative qualities eminently fit him to preside over this modern Coliseum, and all his numerous corps of assistants, are most attentive, polite and kind, and appear to rub the Vast establishment with natural ease and system. Already the Southern element is concentrating at this house, where one is almost certain to meet with friends and acquaintances without the trouble of going around in the search to the other hotels. To enter upon a minute description of this new wonder of the world would be fatiguing, from the inexhausti bility of detail. Suffice to say, that those who favor the immense establishment with their patronage, cannot fail to be pleased witli the genuine courtesy extended, and to re tain agreeable remembrances of the uni form and polite civilities showered upon them. The price of board at this hotel is exceedingly moderate, ranging from three to four dollars per day, according to loca tion of room. TAKE IT, TAKE IT ON, AND KEEP A taking it. Reduce the dose so it acts as a gen eral laxaiive, and continue it on regularly. It is a tonic, and will strengthen you. It took a long time to confirm your disease, and you can’t get well in a day. Simmons’ Liver Reg ulator, if persisted in, will cure the most stub born Liver Disease. There is no failure about it. nov2o ts See advertisement of Dr. Butts’ Dispensary, beaded, Book for the MiIIion—MARRIAGE GUIDE—in another column. It should be read by all. je3-d*wly SPECIAL NOTICES.
