POBK PACKINO AND THE PROVISION Trade. —At all the packiug points in the West the hog slaughter business Is being conducted with activity. At Chicago, up to the 19th inst., 93.279 head had been killed; at Bt. Louis, 17,000 head; at Mil waukee 22,000, and at Louisville the total Hinonut slaughtered up to the 24th inst. amounts to 56,204 head, against 60,000 head at a corresponding date last season. Os the market at other points, the follow ing extracts will be a reflex. The Cincin nati Gazette, of Thursday, the 24th, says: The market for hogs opened at a decline of 25 cents, the whole range of prices be ing s6@6 50, gross, but very little sold at the inside figure, nearly ail the hogs ar riving being heavy, very few lots averag ing tinder 225 lbs , gross, and most of them running up to 300 lbs. and over. Most of the sales were made at $6 25(36 50, gross. At the Covington yards, this afternoon, Hie receipts were 50 cars, and large arri vals are expected at all the roads. The following is from the Chicago Times of Tuesday: “The supply of hogs was abont 9,000 head, including those left over from the preceding week’s market. Packers entered the yard with the determination of forcing prices down, and hence iu place of opera ting they squandered the large part of the forenoon in filibustering, leaving shippers to do the buying. Os course, such condi tion of affairs seemed to weaken the market, yet sellers seemed determined to hold over or sell at full prices, and, as the receipts were notexce sive, they managed to work off a large portion of it at $6(36 75 for good to choice lots, and $6(36 75 for skippers coarse mixed lots and fair bacon grades.— In a few instances selected lots crossed the scales at $6 80(36 95, yet tbe bulk of the sales were within the range of $6 25 3 6 75. Packers declare they cannot and will not operate at present figures. They point to the ruling figures paid at other markets as an evidence of the unjust exactions of sell, era. No one can tell what shape the market will take within the next forty eight hours. To go np seems impossible, and yet it may not go down; all will de pend upon the receipts.” Death of an Old Resident of Marion. —The Marion (S. C.)
