No Alarm Given, and the Police Non Est ■ On Sunday morning, between four and five o’clock, the stable of CoL .Maxwell, in this city, was discovered to be on fire, and the colored man had barely time to get the hor.^eq out before the building was reduced tc, ashes. There were not over a dozen persons on baud, and the people generally, even the immediate neighbors, knew nothing of it"tor several hours afterward The strange prrt of the affair ,is, that while we have a police whose duty it is to be on the watch and give the alarin, yet no alarm was given, and the vigilant members oi tlu.t efficient (?) body were •u blissful ignorance of the occurrence. Of what servic * ore our present police men? Why are we taxed to feed and clothe a set of wachmen, who are eter nally remiss in their duty? In the name of tli€ citizens we demand . he removal of those men. We have to pay taxes, and in return we demand pro tection of life and property. We want good men, capable men. and sober men.
