The proceedings of the railroad
mooting at Talbotton on the 3d in*!-, will
l>o found in this paper. In them a meet
ing of the counties of Coweta, Merri weth
er, Marion, Schley, and Somter,
. p tasted to l*e had by committee at Geneva
on tho loth of June, to oonfer on the*mb
ject of building a railroad from New nan
to Amorieua. The people of Sumter
ihnuld feel great interest and (lo nil in '
ihair power to help build up this road, us
it will bring them nearer to the grain and
provision markets of tho Middle and
Western States, and thereby greatly re
duce their price. Wo believe meetings
.ne to be held in tho other counties
named favorable to this load, and onr
people should also consider tho benefit
to 1*3 derived and take such steps as are
necessary to secure it to themselves.

On Thursday last the Sunday
School picnic took place at Magnolia
Dell, and proved to lx* a very pleasant
affair.' The Albany Schools were in at
tendance, and were hospitably treated.
The Smithville Schools were alro in at
tendance.
It was announced by Judge Ansley that
there would he no regular programme,
but that all should endeavor to pass the
day as agreeably ns. possible. Pretty
aoou pleasant groupcs were scattered all
over the Dell, and the chfldron entered
into all the mewy sports ol childhood
with youthful alacrity.
The occasion was also enlivened by the
presence of tho Americus band, whose
sweet music added three fold to the
pleasure of the occasion.
BgL. Intellectual superiority occasions
little difference in matters of conduct—
Nature guarantees a general similarity of
actions. Opinions and fancies, whether
more or less, within the province of hu
man control, and an identity of which is
not essential to the purpose of existence,
admit of an indefinite variety. Bnt there
is one subject on which all unite, and that
is, that TV, A. Cook & Co. sell the cheap
est Drugs and Medicines of anrfhonsc in
Americus. npril 23- lw

The Fatal Sanrr—It Causes tub
Death of Six Persons.—From a physi
cian practicing in Kentucky, we obtain
the following details of a singularly tragic
story:
“A short time ago a white man living
jar Hopkinsville had an attack of small
pox. He was not very neat in his habits
or else he had poor noising, as he did not
change his shirt daring his entire illness.
When convalescent, ho gave the garment
to a negro woman, with the injunction to
bmyitdeep in the ground, for fear of
communicating the dreadful disease to
others. But aunty was of a utilitarian
turn, and thought it a sin to throw away
so good a shirt while there was many
backs to cover. So she subjected it to a
careless sort of washing; and presented it
to her husband, who appeared at church
next Sunday in all the gloiy of a ‘biled
shirt* The next day he wr* seized with
small-pox, and died soon after—and so
did five others, who successfully came in-
