1 have maturely considered your
suggestion to “ wisely unite in efforts
to restore Louisiana to her former po

indicates a desire for practical recon

Finding nothing to take hold of except

It I appreciate the principles of the
Democratic party, its prominent fea
tures oppose list* enfranchisement of
the colored man, and deny the right

except by the Slates individually.- ■
These two features haven tendency to
exclude Southern men I t orn that party ;
for the colored man is already enfran
chised here, aud we cannot seek alli
ance Ax'ith a party that Avonld restrict
his rights. The exclusive right, of the
States to legislate upon suffrage will
make the enfranchisement of the blacks,
whether for better or for worse, a fix
ture amongst us. It appears, therefore,
that those xvliocry loudest against this
new order of things as a public calamity,
are those whose principles would fix it
upon us without a remedy. Hence it
becomes us to insist that suffrage should
be extended in all of the States and
tally sted. Lite people of the North
should adopt xvhat, they have forced
upon us ; and if it be proven to he a
mistake, they should remove it by the
remedy under republican principles of
uniform laws; upon suffrage.
