In your admit .able lettq}’ of the Kith ultimo, you remark that “our clou ts at reconstruction -will lie vain and use less unless we embark in the cute! pri*e with the sinetrity of purpose which will command success.'’ The spirit which inspired the above paragraph, together with the fact that thousands of brave soldiers are still ready to follow their leader wherever he may see lit to call them, has embold ened me to 1 '.tend to you an invita tion to a! tend a mass meeting in La in yc-Ue ritju; l . re, to-morrow evening, at which the 1 1011. Henry Wilson, a dis tinguished Under in'the Republican party will address the citizens of New Orleans. As Soldier.-;, we were opposed to each oilier during the lab war; but a citizens may xx-e not wisely unite in efforts to restort: Louisiana to her i'or t mer position in the Union through the f part v now in power, and which in .til probability will retain power for mmiv years to come ? ■ If you accept, I shall be glad to hear your vit ws on the con dition of public nft'rirs. Practical men can surely distinguish between practical r< construction ami reconcilia- Juouas tui abstract question. I will I endeavor, liowever, with renewed e»- Iprgy, to meet your wishes in the mat ■ er. ’ The serious diUiculty that I ap- 1 I rebend is the want of that wisdom I hich is necessary for the great work. I shall he happy to work in any harness ■ jat promises relief to our distressed ■ eople aud harmony to the nation. It ft tatters not whether I bear the mantle Bf Mr. Davis or the mantle of Mr. B'mmer, so that T may help to bring glory of “peace and good will to ■ •ard men.” H 1 shall set- out by assuming a propo- HVtou, tiiat l hold to be self-evident, Bin: The highest of human laws is IBlte law that is established by appeal jB" arms. ■ The great principles that divided po- Btieal parties prior to the Avar were thoroughly discussed by out wisest [atesmeii. When argument was cx ■tusted resort was had to compromise. ■V lien compromise ax’as unavailing, fiseussion xvas renexyetl, and c\j>c<Ti ents were sought, but none could be found to suit the emergency. Appeal w 1. finally made to the sword to de termine which of the claims was the firm; ronsh action of constitutionailaw. lie sword has decided in favor of the >rth, and xvhat they claimed as prin >les ceased to be principles, raid have come laAv. The views that we hold rse to be principles because they arc posed to law. It is, therefore, our ty to abandon ideas that are obsolete, and conform to the requirements of The military bill, and amendments, epeace off rings. We should accept cm as such, and jdace ourselves up them as the starting point If mi Much to meet future political issues as ■Likcot'iU ; Southern men, I naturally Bight alliance with the Democratii B’ . ’> v . .! vvas opposed to the Rcptihlican party. l!ut as far as L can judge, there is nothing tangi ble about it, except tlie issues thatxx ere staked upon the war and there lost. Finding nothing to take hold of except prejudice, xvhich cannet be xvorked in to good for any one, it is proper and right that I should seek some stand point from xvhich good may lie done. It I appreciate the principles of the Democratic party, its prominent fea tures oppose list* enfranchisement of the colored man, and deny the right legislate upon the subject of suffrage, except by the Slates individually.- ■ These two features haven tendency to exclude Southern men I t orn that party ; for the colored man is already enfran chised here, aud we cannot seek alli ance Ax'ith a party that Avonld restrict his rights. The exclusive right, of the States to legislate upon suffrage will make the enfranchisement of the blacks, whether for better or for worse, a fix ture amongst us. It appears, therefore, that those xvliocry loudest against this new order of things as a public calamity, are those whose principles would fix it upon us without a remedy. Hence it becomes us to insist that suffrage should be extended in all of the States and tally sted. Lite people of the North should adopt xvhat, they have forced upon us ; and if it be proven to he a mistake, they should remove it by the remedy under republican principles of uniform laws; upon suffrage. If every man iti the country will meet the ct is, • with a proper appreciation of opr condition, aud come fairly up to his responsibilities, on to-inorvoxv the sun will smile upon a h tppy people, out fields will again begin to yield iitcit increase, our railroads and rivers will teem with abundant commerce, out tyxvus tui'.i cities xvlll resound with the tumult of trade, aid we shall be invigoratoil by tic blessings of Al mighty God. ! am, sir, rcspei t l l illy, Vour most ohh serv’t, J.V.XIKS LoNCSTKKoT.
