The Daily Loyal Georgian. AUGUSTA, GA., JULY 2J. 1867. Yesterday was (lie warmest day within two weeks past. The new Steam Fire Kngine “ Ga zelle” was again put on trial yesterday afternoon near the Globe Hotel. The walks on either side the street were lined with spectators to witness the operations of the engine. There were evident sings of satisfaction with theresuls of the trial, and we know not how an unlavo-tahle impression could have been gotten. The engine is capable of throwing a large compact stream to the bight of any store or residence in the city. A good stock of good engines, kept ready in good repair, constitute a safe guard to a city of more value than ! qudraple their real cos'. It is economy j even when the city is in ;; low state of finance to keep up a well regulated complete Fire Engine and Hose appa ratus. The corner Stone of the now store j to be reared just opposite us by Mr. W. B. Griffin, was laid yesterday after-; noon, with rcremoni/. The box de posited contained the city papers, a stamp, and, we are U hl, some liquid. The stone was laid under the grate inspection of two or three locals, after which all felt dry and went over to | s. We hardly know tow to interpret j the auspices under which the building is begun. We hope the auguries are favorable to a good and worthy super str uctrc. Notice. A public meeting will he hold at the | Court House, in the city of Columbus, on the first Saturday in August—the yd day. ( All Republicans who are in favor of sustaining the measures of Congress, and the policy of the Radical Union Republican party are invited to attend. Business of a political character will he attended to, and a Union Club organized in each county in this sec tion. G. W. A'umjitN, President Union Repub. Club. CoLt'&iiiL's, July 20, I*o7. We find the following news (?) in the A. Y. Tribune of the 10th. Our friends will be pleased to know that our strength is so well l 'in hand:'' By Telegraph to the Tribune. Acc.ust.x, July 18.- There is one Union Bopublican dub in this city, numbering 400 white and 1,000 colored voters. Foster Blod gett, the Mayor, is said to he President of this dub. Philadelphia has 96,983 manufactur ing operatives, whose gross earnings yearly are §135,907,777. In the num ber of her employees, that city is over 16,000 ahead of New York, and far ahead of any other American fitly. A gentleman who has j ust completed j an extensive tour through the southern j part of Illinois, says that all the wheat south of the Ohio and Mississippi rail road has been harvested. The berry is large and plump, and the crop re markably heavy. It has not been touched by bug or rot. The Common Council of New Or leans'have adopted a resolution pro- ] viding common school education for ; colored children, and appropriating sixty thousand dollars for the maintain anco of tiie same.
