The Galveston News mentions that on the
eveningofthe3lst ult. aGerman by the name
of Benccke, who was stopping at the Union
House of Mr. Herlarher, while occupied in
endeavoring to discharge Ids gun exploded
four caps without effect. On li ving the fifth
cap tiie gun went off and the Joad of shot
entered the abdomen of a brother of Mr.
JJerlacher. The unfortunate man died of the
wound next morning. Mr. Benecke has been
committed for trial in the District Court.
The U. S. steamer Maria Burt, put into
Galveston indistresson the 7th inst. She was
bound for the Brazos. According to the Ci
vilian’s report she had a narrow escape from
the violence of a norther she encountered on
the 6th inst. She owed tier safely to her
staunchness. Sue would take in a supply of
fuel and proceed to her destination.
Tl»e S'ackct Ship Xew York.
From a letter to the consignee in this
city, under date of the 12ih inst. we learn
that this vessel was in the same position
us before reported, hut with every prospect
of her being got ofF. The necessary as
iistance, in apparatus, &c., was hourly
expected from New." York. Her cargo
was about being removed to Beaufort,
iTi
North-Carolina, and from thence would
he shipped to this port with all possible
despatch. The letter further adds that
nothing would he sold, but all sent for
ward.
A passenger in the Wilmington boat,
arrived yesterday, who left New York
on Wednesday last, confirms the above
intelligence, expressing the opinion thrt
she will be got ofTif Ihe weather is favor
able. The agents of the underwriters
had doubtless arranged as to the amount
of salvage to he paid. The goods are
dated to he in as good order as could ho
desired. A flywheel belonging to a steam

JURY.
Richmond Superior Court —lst weeh — Jan. Term.
The Grand Jury for the first week, January
Term, eighteen hundred and forty-seven, have
been unable, by pressure of business, to visit and
examine the Poor House or the state of the Books
of the County Clerk. They are able, however,
to report that a Committee of their body have ex
amined the Jail, and find that building kept in
good order and the prisoners in a comfortable situ
ation. But they would call the attention of the
proper authorities to the had condition of the roof,
the gutters and the window sash of the building.
The Committee appointed to examine the Books
and Accounts of the County Treasurer have per
formed that duty, and report the Books kept with
perfect neatness and the accounts correct. The
amount received from all sources since the last
term of the Court in June, 1846,is §5,629 47, and
the disbursements ''all with proper vouchers) $5,-
338 10. ’Hie balance of §291 37 stands to the
credit of the County Treasurer, in the Bank of
Augusta, astyipears by the certificate of the Cash
ier thereof.
The Committee appointed to examine the state
of the Roads and Bridges in the County, have not
been able to make a personal examination of this
matter, hut believe from enquiry that the Roads
are in as pood order as could be reasonably ex
pected at this season of the year. They report the
Bridge over Butler's Creek, on the Louisville Road
to be in very bad order, and in a condition dan
gerous to the public travel, and recommend that
tiie Inferior Court have this Bridge put in imme
diate repair.
In taking leave of His Honor Judge Gamble, the
Grand Jury sincerely regret that the slate of his
health compels him to resign the high station
w hich lie has filled with so much impartiality and,
dignity, while presiding as Judge of tills Court;
and are in hopes that by retiring from its arduous
duties, his health may again he fully restored. We
also return thanks to John J. R. Flournoy, Attoney
General, for the courtesy and ability, with which he
has discharged the duties devolving on him.

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 13. Cotton. —Arrived

stock of 2374 bales, and leaving on hand, inclu
sive of all on shiuboard not cleared on the 12th
in>t., a stock of 107,5% bales.
Our last report closed on Friday, which being
a holiday, very .-title business was done, though
I we remarked iliat there were indications of a firm
er feeling on the part of holders, notwithstanding
| a material accumulation of stock. On Saturday
I quite an active inquiry sprung up, and during the
j day some 7890 bales were disposed of, a portion on
speculation, but the greater part on English and
Northern account, and priees closed at an improvc
! ment of an *to a ?<“• upon tHe rales which were
j paid a day or two previous. On Monday there
; was comparatively but little done, attributable .in
; some measure, perhaps, to the entire failure of the
! mail two days in succession, and transactions were
' restricted to about 3200 bales, taken mostly for the
| North, prices remaining full and firm. Yesterday
the back mails came through, but the day was far
! advanced before the letters were distributed, and
; the accounts from the North not proving cncour
j a 2 ing buyers inn ui tested little disposition to operate
j freely at the full rates claimed by holders, though
; there was, nevertheless, a larger business done
I than on the day previous, the sales reaching about
4390 bales, and very full prices were maintained,
notwithstanding some increase in the amount on
sale. The business of the three days sums np 15,300
bales, the greater part of winch has been taken for
England and the North, with some parcels on
speculation, and lor the Continent of Europe; and
the gradual stu!i*nmg of the market has brought
prices back to within a fraction ofthe highest point
point reached immediately receipt ofthe Cambria's
advices, as will he seen by reference to annexed
quotations, which have been amended to conform
as nearly as possible to tiie altered position ofthe
] market, though th ■ prevalence of a good deal of
; irregularity renders it. difficult to quote with strict
I accuracy'. The receipts are again falling off, and
! this circumstance tends to strengthen the market.
