,tfyuterioua nui Sappo*ei Marder. We have been informed through a re liable source, that during last week, a parcel of genteel clothing was found con cealed in the 12tli‘ district of Meriwether county. Among other at tides was u shirt and undershirt, considerably stained with hlood, with a luroe cut across Iho abdomen on the left side and a bullet hole penetrating the right side, in the re gion of the navel, the cut and hole cor responding in both garments. Tiiere was some fine jewelry wrapped op with the clothing, consisting of breastpin, shirt studs, &c. Tl e name of‘lL fl. Chil ton” was marked on the shirt. The pre sumption is, that a foul murder has been committed on a person by that name. It is further stated that a gentleman by that name passed through some time ago on his wav to New Orleans, and lost a trunk in that neighborhood, and was expected to return about this time in pursuit of his property. —Grijjin {Geo) Jeffersonian, 10M inst. Counterfeiters Arrested. We leai n iroin a letter tuai we have seen from a correspondent of the Bank of Charles ton, residing in N tshville, (Tenn,) that ‘die had succeeded in arresting and convicting pome 10 or 12 counterfeiters in that county, among'l whom were some of the most noto rious and expert swindlers, as well as the most extensive operators in spurious money in the United S.ales. With some twenty other philes, finished and unfinished, is the Eight Dollar plate of the Bank of Charleston. ' an impression taken from which a; compan es the letter, and is now in our possession. It is the sic simile of the counterfeits of that denomination which we have heretofore noticed. We also learn that two other parties— probably of the same gang —have been taken up and arc now in jail in North Carolina— one in Stokes, tlie other in Ashe county. The exertions of those engaged in ferreting out t/iOsC depredators leave been, we are in formed, handsomely remunerated, and they deserve, in addition, the thanks of the com munity generally. — Charleston ( Courier , 12 th. The European news is anxiously looked for.— No sign of the steamer yet. MONTGOMERY. Feb. O.—Colfon.—TUc mar ket here is dull and inactive. The news of the decline of Icin the Mobile market, lias produced its effect here. There is very little doing, and that little at a decline. We hear of no sales high er titan 11c. APALACHICOLA, FEB. 6.—Cotton—Tele graphic news of the arrival of the “Hibernia’* reached us on Tuesday, but in consequence of the non-urrfval of the letters and circulars till yester day, there was but little done, Tuesday, Wednes day, or Thursday. The few sales made were at iiregular prices generally however at 4 to }c. ad vance. Yesterday after the mail was distrihm »d, on active demand sprung up. and rising 20 0 bales changed hands, principally taken by "tie operator. The advance on prices, previous to the arrival of the steamer, is foil ic.; 104 for Good .Middling, be ing about the prices paid yesterday. To-day there is a pause in the market, the sales only amounting to a few hundred hales. On hand ami on ship board not cleared 37,972 hales. Freights. —V easels continue very scarce, the ar rivals from sea this week being confined to a cou ple of schooners, one of which has been taken for Baltimore at 1 1-J6c. Cleared in the same time 6565 hales—making an addition to stock of 789:1 hales, and leaving on band, inclusive ©f all on shipboard not cleared on the sih instant, a stuck of 207.507 bales. the day of making up our Inst report, the I Baltimore papers came to hin 1 by mail, contain ing a telegraphic summary of the accounts by the Hibernia, but in so meagre and uncertain a shape 1 that they had the effect to suspend all bo-mess in j I the cotton market, and we left all parlies most 1 anxiously looking for reliable advices through the I commercial circulars and correspondence. On t | Wednesday both buyers and sellers were still kept i in suspense, the mail having failed beyond Cliai les i ton, ami only two or three lots, amounting in all ’ i to some 1200 hales, were disposed of. at a cocside ; i rahle decline from previous prices, the ma ket he | log unsettled by the delay in the transmission of : i ilie foreign advices, and by the apprehension, gen t crally entertained, that they would prove much I I-ss encouraging lhaft had been confidently expect ! cd. On Thursday morning the mail came through, ’ { bringing the commercial circulars and correspon dence. Notwithstanding the- favorable com.dex . ion of these accounts, compared with what was apprehended on receipt ofthe telegraphic stimma t i ry, the correspondence was distributed at so late j an li >tir in the (iay that very few parties appeared to be prepared to enter the market, and the sales were restricted to a few lots, embracing only about 1200 hales, at irregular rales, but stilt considera bly in favor of buyers, compared with the Ir.msac ’ tions which look place immediately after the ar > rival of the Themis. Yesterday if was supposed that the market would open with some activity, hut the day passed away without any business of i much importance being transacted, only about | 2000 hale- having changed hands, so far as we j could learn. We understand that there were of ! fers to some extent in the morning, on the part of exporters, hut at rates below what holders seemed willing to accept.and subsequently the advanced rates claimed for freight (eqnil to about per lb) so unsettled the views of all parties that the day closed without any established market, and v\e find it necessary to'omit quotations altogether, tiie few transactions that have taken place being at such irregular rates as to fnrni-fi no reliable guid* for arranging a new scale of prices. 1 lie. tola! sales of the past three days have barely reached j 4400 hales, and fur the week only 54(H) bales.
