The Albany, (Ga.) Patriot of the 17ih inst.
says—“ Gen. James Hamilton is preparing
to ship a of corn from this place to Ap
alachicola, and from thence to Europe. It
was produced at his plantation a few miles
from Albany. It is put up in neat 2 bushel
earks. This is the first shipment of grain
which has been attempted from this section,
but if the European prices continue as at
present, it will not be the last. We can af
ford to raise corn at fifty cents per bushel.”
Tho*o Privateers.
The New York Commercial of Thursday,
says;—“We have obtained positive and speci
fic information concerning those three email*
armed btcaui brigs, which one of our English
correspondents was induced to consider -M ex i *
can privateers. They have been built in
England for the Government of .Manilla, which
contracted for them two years ago. Their
object is to cruise againot the Souloo and
Borneo piratical prahus, and to facilitate
communication between Manila and the
provinces and adjacent islands, &c. Home
negotiations for the construction and c
qnipment of these vessels took place about
three years ago with a gentleman in tin's
citv, but fell through in consequence of a
change in the government of Manilla.”

Now York was visited on the evening of
the 18th inst. with a fall of snow, and up to
3 o’clock on the morning of the I9ih the
ground was covered to the depth of three
inches.
CrTwenty-five thousand dollars have been
subscribed in New York city, fur the relief
of the sufferers in Ireland.

The Baltimore Hun of the 2Ulli inst. says.—
“ There teems to be no doubt entertained in
New York, of the truth of the statement that
the speculators have arranged expresses from
Halifax, at the expense it is raid of .$5,000*
toobtiii the news by the Cambria, in ad
vance of the press. It would be well, thcre
fore.for dealers to be on their guard, lest they
may be led to sell or buy at prices which a
knowledge of the news would lead them to
regret. The steamer has now been out six
teen days, and may be momentarily expect
«d, as the Boston Telegraph is in order.”
o*The Srate Treasury of Pennsylvania is
short about $200,000 of the sum requisite to
pay the February interest on the Stale debt.
The Governor asked the Legislature to au
thorize a temporary loan to make it up,which
was granted.
O’Captains Wilson and Duggan, and their
two companies of volunteers from Edgecombe
rountv, N. C. sailed from Srnilhvilie on Mon
day, 15th instant, on board the schr. E. S.
Powell. They are bound for Brazos San
tiago.

MOBILE. Feb. 17. Cotton —Our last report
J left the market in a sinking condition, under the
( influence of movement in freights and
j the pressure of money matters. The .-ante condi
| lion offbings has prevailed this week —only ifpo>-
j sibietbe incumbrances have increased. The mar
! kel continued to decline till Saturday last, when
middling cottons were quoted at 1U a 10* c. For
I the last two or three days, however, the market
has assumed more steadiness, am! it must be noted,
i the transactions are small—only such parties offer
j ing their stocks as are compelled or instructed to
j sell at the present prices. The sales this week, as
has been the case the last two weeks, embrace to
a considerable extent, re .-ales, which, as they are
, positive transactions, we are not authorized to
; omit. We give the estimated daily transactions
as follows: Wednesday 1000, Thursday 20 0. ITi- i
day 2000, Saturday 1200, .Monday 2000, and yes

I us a verv imperfect and unsatisfactory outline of
I the foreign accounts by steamer Sarah Sands, at
j New York, conveyed by magnetic telegraph to
Baltimore. The effect of this intelligence, as a
matter of course, has been the suspension of all
operations in our market till we are in possession
of details. We, have only heard of sales to the ex
tent of 450 hales, at yesterday’s prices.
In freights we have to note the engagement to
day of bark 11 uma for Ghent, full at 2c. We hear
of no other new operations. The rate last paid to
Havre was 2c.
