[Correspondent e of the Baltimore Nu?/.] Mew York, Feb. 2S, 9 P. M. W e have had stormy and squally weather in abundance, and the atmosphere is becoming quite chilly. There were sales yesterday of prime Genesee brands at $7, and of Baltimore and Georgetown at $6 624. N. ( OLUMBUS, March I. Cotton. —The trans actions in the cotton market since onr last have been extremely light; there seems to he no dispo sition on the part of planters to offer the crops in store at thedepre>sed prices. The stock on hand here is, it will he seen, 17,396 against 18,428 bales last year; then chffflv owned by the planters; and now it is generally supposed that there is but4or SUOO hales unsold. The news per Cambria bas had no effect in New York, upon , cotton, as orices were firm at those current prior** to her arrival. We quote 8 to 9;c. MOBILE, Feh. 27.— Collon. —The receipts since last Friday are 16,645 bales, and ihe exjtoris 4.U36. • Tbe stock on hand and on shipboard not cleared is | 175,277 bales, against 177,024 bales same nine last I year. The market closed on Friday last with a good deal of heaviness; middling cottons were quoted at 94 a 10c, and the Liverpool accounts to the 19ih Jan. were but imperfectly reported. They were received in full the next day however, and buyers and sellers meeting rather more freely, 2500 bales changed bands at a small reduction on our last quotations. The transactions of Mum ay were more limited, factors reluctantly assenting to tlie { further concessions demanded, and many of them i refusing to offer llieir samples. About J5l)0 bales changed bands at rather easier rates. Un Tues day there was a more general attendance, and some 3000 bales were tanen, middlings averaging j about Die. The mail of Wednesday brought un favorable accounts of the condition of the .V York market, and about 2500 bales were disposed of at rates a little more in favor of the buyer. 'The mar ket opened on Thursday with a good inquiry, but towards the close of the day it stiffened tip so as to limit the. sales to 2000 bales. The sales yester day reached only 800 hales, buyers and sellers awaiting the news from Europe to the 4th Februa- : ry, now fully due. Some of the. largest holders re fuse to otfer their stocks. Tbe low rates of exchange, the advancing freights, and the drooping aspect of must of the do- ; raestic markets, have exerted an influence in de- 1 pressing prices, and limiting transactions here to I some 12900 bales. If there ever was a t ime w ben more than ordina ry firmness w as required on the part of the holders of this article, it is the present. A brief glance at the present aspect of the trade in it, will suffice to show this. Those whose interest it is to get up a j panic, to cry “wolf,” in order to buy cheap, to re duce prices within their orders and scales of ad- I vances, will seize upon the present moment to depress them, and alarm the holder, to w horn we would say, before becoming a dupe to the panic which English spinners and English commission houses, with the small fry that take their cue from them, are endeavoring to create, pause and look around you, and profit by the experience of past years—of last spring, under the depression caused by the breaking out of the Mexican war. Act with the firmness that.then characterised many of the holders of Gotten, and ships and orders will both come to the relief of the South.
