Failure of the Cambria** The Express train with the mails for the Cam bria, which was dispatched Irom New \ ork on Sunday morning, did not arrive at Greenport until 11 o’clock on Sunday night, and the boat did not leave Greenport for Norwich until Monday morn ing, and would therefore he 100 late for the steam er. This will he a great disappointment in t he present commercial crisis. [communicated! <;c«. l>avi«l Ij. Twisg", C. 8. A. The exhibition of a magnificent sword in | this city, lobe presented to Gen. Twiggs by the citizens of Augusta, and Richmond coun ty, is the occasion of this brief biographical notice of him. lie is the third son of Gen. John Twiggs, of revolutionary memory, and was born at the family residence in this county. (Rich mond,) in 1790, After a brief sojourn in Franklin College at Athens, he entered the office of the present venerable head of the Augusta Bar, Gen. Flournoy. In 1812, with the first notice of the last war against Great Britain, lie obtained a Lieutenant’s commis sion through his lather’s influence, and has ! row served thirty-five years in the United , Slates Army; and past through every variety I of climate, exposure and disease. During t the late war, as it is still termed, he was | confined to the sea-board of tin's State, being posted at Savannah, Darien, St. Mary’s, &<-• | He afterwards served with Gen. Jackson in the Indian campaign, and ever afterwards se cured the esteem and friendship of this great | captain. To Capt. Twiggs was assigned the duty of receiving the surrender of Fort St. Marks. Gen. Jackson, then President, give to j Lieut. Col. Twiggs the command of the tnili- ; tary expedition against Black Hawk, when j the cholera in 1 332, arrested it at Green Bay. J In 1833, during the days of nullification, he j by the order of the President, was in com- | mind at the Arsenal near Augusta. Col. I . i Twiggs accompanied Gen. Gaines, as second in command, when he marched from Tampa Bay to Fori King in Florida, after the mas- 1 tsacre of Maj. Dade’s column. He was also in the battle at the cove of Withlacoochee, when Gen. Gaines was surrounded by the Indians. Soon after this, he was advanced from Lieut. Col. of the 4th Infantry, to full Colonel of the 2d Regt. of Dragoons, and served with it under Gen. Scott during his campaign in Florida. He was second to Gen. Taylor at the battle of Palo Alto on the Blb of May, and commanded the right wing of the army on that memorable occa sion. Col. Twiggs gave the order by which the enemy’s last effort on that day was ar rested, by Ridgely’s battery firing upon the Mexican cavalry. On the 9th, at llesactf tie la Palma, our army never deployed into line, but he conducted the entire movements of the right wing, to the salisfaclion of the com mander-in-chief. At Monterey, he was once more second to Gen. Taylor in the regular army, and was ordered with his division to make a diversion in favor of Gen. Worth, who was to conduct the main attack. This diversion, as is recollected, proved to be by far the heaviest affair, and Gen. Twiggs’ di vision suffered severely. Gen. Twiggs is nor a graduate of West, Point—most if not all the letter writers in the army are from that school; hence little is paid by them of him. He is, again.much too independent in his words and actions, ever to become a popular man. But this officer has been appreciated by Gen. Taylor and Presi dent Polk, as he was by Gen. Jackson; and now his own fellow citizens, those of Augus ta and Richmond county, have had a most elegant sword manufactured to be presented to him, for his long, efficient and gallant ser vices to his country. His character mav be defined to be, a reckless independence alike of superiors and inferiors, a severe discipli narian, unflinching determination, the strict est honesty and a good heart. 1 I'scapc of Francis D. $ The individual who has obtained an infamous notoriety and been convicted of forgery and embezzlement on several in dictments, succeeded in making his escape from the parish prison lasi evening. His absence was discovered about 9 o’clock, and immediately made known to .Mr. Wagner, [be U. S. marshal, who at once notified the police and offered a reward of SIOOO for bis apprehension. We heard of ibe affair quite late last evening, but could not ascertain from any source upon which we could place reliance the modus operandi of the escape, and forbear to give currency to the rumors and surim-es that were indulged. A thorough investigation into the affair will of cour.-e immediately he instituted, and every means taken to retake him.— N. O. Picayune , 23//t ult. Volunteer*, A report has been in circulation for j some time past, that the barracks below' } this city were closed to the volunteers by ! order of the Secretary of War, We ; have no doubt that litis report originated | with persons w ho designed by such dirty ! means to injure the democratic adminis- ! (ration in the eyes of our fellow citizens, : and in particular of the friends and rela tionsofthe volunteers. We have author ity for saying, that ibis report is entirely false and unfounded. No order for ex cluding the volunteers from the barracks was ever issued by the Secretary of War, or by any bead of a bureau of the War Department. The second Mississippi regiment of volunteers has been, in a manner, put hors du combat, by being forced to encamp on Ihe battle ground, tip to their knees in mud and water, in the most tempestuous weather that has been witnessed in this quarter of the country for many years. The responsibility f?r this dreadful calamity rests somewhere —but not with the head of the War De partment.—N. O. Cour.y 28 th ult. W* are requested* to announce It. 1). One of the m >st important discoveries of the age, in ameliorating the. condition of this large class of suflferering humanity, con umptives, is Dr. Wistar’s Balsam of \\ ild Cherry. M hat lime cs tubli-■ h"s and consecrates, w hat experience adopts and confirms, wScat all men in all places unite in saying is good and valuable, is so, no doubt. A popularity of this sort fixes in society its roots so deep and so strong, that lime cannot destroy it. — 'ldle success which lias attended this medicine fur I several yea r s past, ha? overcome the prejudices of all respectable and sensible men, and the article has taken a stand among the fir.-t class of discove ries and blessings of the age; and when resorted to in season, eradicates the diseases for which il i recommended. We cut the following from the Bellows' Fulls Gazelle, of January, 1846. WIST AR ’S BA L-S AM. —Notwithstanding our aversion to pulling, as many do, everything that comes along in the shape of Patent Medicines, and the fact that we scarcely ever take medicines of any kind, yet we ieel that we should be doing injustice to the community by withholding longer the favorable opinion we have of IV isLir s Bal sam, in cases of colds and pulmonary complaints. Having witnessed its good effects in several in stances, we believe it to bean excellent article.
