Officer, Vlusician or Private in the Army ofthe
Lulled States in Mexico, or of any post or place
on the frontier of the United Slates bordering on
Mexico, will pass free in the mails if alter the

CITY ELECTION.
The annual Election of Mayor and three Mem
bers of Council for each Ward, to serve for the
ensuing year, will be held on Monday, the 12th
April, 1847, at the several places hereafter desig
nated. The Polls will he opened at 10 o'clock,
A. M. and closed at 2 o’clock, P. M.
After the polls are closed, tire Managers will
meet at the place of holding the election in Ward
No. 2, to add the votes given in the several M ards
for Mayor, and declare the person having the high
est number of votes duly elected.

COTTON.— Our last review left the market
with the Hibernia’s advices just at hand per tele
graph. but they were so unsatisfactory that both
buyers and sellers appeared to show but little dis
position to operate until the letters came through.
The failure of the mails p evented the letters reach
ing this city before Saturday evening, and when
received, being of a discouraging nature, showing
a decline in the Liverpool market of full i a Id.
since the departure of the last steamer, our market
became quite unsettled and opened on Monday
morning with but a limited demand from purcha

GROCERIES—We have had a qni -t market in
the Grocery line this w'eek; nnr merchants, how- ;
ever,are kept busily engaged in receiving and open- j
ing tlieir goods, and at the present moment their I
slock of all descriptions is good and w ell assorted.
CORN.—There I<as been a better demand for j
( «>rn this week, and prices have an upward ten
d ncy. Sales have been reported to ns of about
2000 bushels, loose and in sacks, at 65c fur loose i
and 70c fur sacks.
B\Co\.—The receipts this week have been
heavier than for some weeks past, and prices have !
declined. Sales hive been reported to ns of about :
35.0 )0 lbs at prices ranging from 8 to 81c the hog
round.
FLOUR.—There lias been a good enquiry for
Georgia Flour, and about 2)0 bids have been dis
posed of at £si a 5i per hbl.
SUGARS—The market is now well supplied
with New Orleans, and prices have a downward *
tendency.
MOLASSES.—A sale, of 20 hhds. of Cuba has
been made this week from wharf, at 27c. p-r gal.
SALT.—Good stuck on hand and retailing from
stores at 40 to 45 cents per bushel, according to |
qua ntity.

APALACHICOLA, March 23.— Cotton.—' The
receipts during the past week amount to NCI)
bales, and the exports to 3390, leaving the stock
on hand, including all on shipboard not cleared, of
32.039 bales, against 26,649 bales same use last
year.
We left the market at the close of our last week*
ly report wi h quite an active inquiry lor cotton,
the sales of the preceding da v niflonnting to 644
hales at an advance of fc, making a total advance j
during the week of |c. The week under review
commenced with a very moderate inquiry for cot i
ton. the activity which prevailed *>n Monday 1 av- ;
trig entirely subsided on Tuesday—the sales of the i
day only amounting to 52 hales. Late Tuesday
evening we received by an arrival direct, accounts i
from New Orleans to the 12th inst., w hich being !
very favorable for cotton, holders advanced their |
asking prices full fc on Wednesday, which ad- j
\ mice, in tlie sales that took place, amounting to
252 bales,‘hey were enabled to realize. Thursday
