NEW ORLEANS. March 28, 11 o’c’k. £
From the Brazos.
The U. S. steamship Telegraph, Caps.
Anld, arrived at the S. W. Pass on the 27th
instant, at 11 A. M., seventy-two hours from
Brazos Santiago, which p ! ace she left on the
24th inst. On the evening of tin* 251 h en
countered a vif>lent norther and was compel
led to lay to eiiiht hours, receiving no dam
hop, and throughout which she proved her
self a noble sea steamer.
Prom Capt. Anld we learn that no positive
information had been received from Gen. Tay
lor’s camp since the 2d of March. From the
best information obtained if appear- that JSan
la Anna had retired to M:\jeliuala vvrtli the
arinv under his command, where he was en
deavoring to effect a reorganization of his
broken forces. qjid from which place a gas
conading was issued, claim
ing a Buena Vista to the Mexican
arms,
Gen. Taylor had removed his camp from
Buena‘Vista to his former position at Agna
Nneva, and as the Telegraph was casting off
from the landing at Brazos Island, certain in
telligence was received to the effect that |
Gen. Taylor had come through to Ccrralvo |
with 1000 horse, in pursuit of Gen. Urrea, I
who fled in the direction of Victoria upon 1
learning that Gen. Taylor was after him.— ;
The communication between Comargo and j
Monterey may therefore be considered as ;
open and uninterrupted.
Col. Cushing's Regiment of Massachusetts j
volunteers had boon ordered by Gen. Taylor
to remain and occupy Malamoros, all the
other tr.ed regiments being ordered to Agna ;
Nneva. from which place fie wifi shortly take ,
up his line of march for Man Luis Potosi.
The ship Remittance arrived off the Bra- :
zos on the 23d, with four companies of Mas- |
eachusetts volunteers on board. They were i
landed on the morning of (he 24 It. The re- ■
maining companies of the North Carolina Re :
giment fiad arrived, and were being disem- i
barked on (be morning of the 24ih.
Supplies were being pushed forward by I lie i
river boats to Comargo, and wagons, mules,
&c., being hastened forward to replace those
captured and destroyed hy the enemy. All :
excitement had subsided, and tlie Quarter
master’s Department at the Brazos and moifh i
cf the Rio Grande were exerting their ut
most energies to supply the necessary means I
of transportation required for the additional 1
force of Gen. Taylor, and replacing the re- j
cent heavy losses.
Among the passengers by the Telegraph j
are Major Charles 'Thomas, Quartermaster j
U. IS. A., and Mr. A. C. Wakeman, his sec- i
retary, ordered to this place on duty, from ]
Brazos Santiago last and recently from Gen. j
Wool’s division of the army.
i
The above intelligence, in regard to Gen- i
eral Taylor’s movements, is confirmed by a
letter from a responsible source at Comargo, |
from which we make an extract. :

Comaroo, Mexico, March f 9, 1847. i
Editors of the Picayune :—1 havejust seen ;
and conversed with a gentleman direct from
Monterey—his information I think can be re- ;
lied on. lie states that Gen, Taylor has re- 1
turned, since his last battle, to Monterev,
with a portion of cavalry and four pieces of I
light artillery, and left Monterev with about :
1500 in -to look up Gen. Urrea, who is
on ibis s; * offtlre mountains and said to have !
6000 troops—-cavalry and infan'ry. Gen. ,
T. marched in ttie direction of Monte Mo- !
rales, a town about 120 miles south of this, !
and report says that on last Tuesday night
Gen. 'Taylor and liis little band were within
twelve nr fifteen miles of the Mexicans. If
den. T. overtakes them—peace be to their
Rshes. lie whipped Santa Anna on the oth- ;
er side of the mountains and now lie has
come to clear out all this bottom land.
From Vrra Crua.
By the cutler Ewing winch sailed on the
17'h inst., we have our correspondence to the j
15th inst. A continuance of norDiers had j
prevented the operations of landing stores j
and heavy ordinance.
'The Mexicans have born throwing round i
shot and heavy shells at onr lines from the ■
castle, but have done no considerable, if any, ;
harm.
During the night, between the I2fh and
1 3th, a reinforcement of 800 Mexicans en- j
tered the town by the breach north of Gen. j
Twiggs’ position, the investment not being |
there quite complete.
Ti e wound of Lieut. Col. Dickinson, of !
the Palmetto Regiment, is doing well. N<>
other officer than has before been mentioned i
have been killed or wounded.
Communications have passed between (lie j
French and Spanish consuls in Vera Cruz
h ml Gen. Scott. They demand protection, I
&.C., which will be granted as far as possi- ;
b!e.
A schooner, name not known, went on the
beach high and dry, night of the 13th inst.
'l’he vessel which had Col. Harney’s com
mand on hoard went ashore on Blanqmlla
shoal. The Alabama went to her assistance.
It is known that upwards of one hundred 1
men had been taken out of her in safety.— 1
'There were said to he five feet wafer in her
hold. Further particulars by next mail.

Pensacola, March 25, 1847. i
The U. S. sloop of war Decatur, arrived
at this port yesterday, after a very boisterous i
passage of twenty-four days from Norfolk.— i
Owing to the miserable manner in which her
reams had been payed, the ship leaked so |
badly (hat it became necessary, a few days |
out from Norfolk, to scuttle her berth deck; j
and the leak continued throughout the pas- !
sage.
While reefing topsails in a gale, off Grand
Cuyman’s Thomas Proctor, ordinary seaman, 1
fell overboard and was drowned. Lieut. N. j
Collins and a boat's crew promptly volnn- j
tcered for the perilous effort to save him,
but it was deemed impossible for the boat to
live and their noble offer was reluctantly de
clined. In the same gale the ship rolled
away one of her quarter boats—the iron
work giving away.
The Decatur is bound for the Gulf Squad
ron, and will leave here when repaired.

latest DATES from havre, 23.
CHARLESTON, April 2d--- Cotton.— We
stated in our report ofthc 27th ultimo that when
we closed our inquiries on Friday, operations
were partially suspended. It will be recollected
that on the receipt of the telegraphic accounts per
the Hibernia on the Tuesday previous, a demand
prevailed for coastwise shipment, and holders
obtained advanced rates; the non arrival how
ever of the letters, either on Wednesday or
Thursday, kept the market quiet, without any
change in prices. At the close of the week the
private advices by this arrival came to hand, but
t as purchasers were engaged with thetr corres
pondence the market was neglected, as only 100
I bales were reported to have been sold. On Satur
day last near 1500 bales changed hand*;, and
hotdi rs obtained prices that they w< re unable pre
viously to realize. Monday wasya day of some
excitement, near 2700 bales on even
more stringent terms. A good demand also pre
vailed on Tuesday, but the operations were limit
ed to some i 100 bales; owing to the high preten
sions ofsdlers; ami from the same cause the sales
of Wed esday were restricted to 1100 bales, and
yesterday to 1200 bales. It will thus be seen
that in the face of a reduction in prices on the
1 other side, holders have not only been able to
sustain titeir former position, but a material irn
pro 1 c;mnt las been effected in prices, which is
to be attributed to a settled conviction among
| factors generally that the crop is destined to he a
’ very short one. The aggregate sales sinre our
last reach 7*oo bales, against the receipt in the
j same time of 5002 bales. Ihe actual transac
