O&ITUST those be who have Pulmonary Consumption,
T.* fll or any atlection of the Lungs, lover ftr Chest,
after reading ihe following letter, just received from a j
in si respectable inhabitant of Westchester County
New Yoi k.
Tarrytown, Aug. 9, fd.
Dear Doctor—lt is difficult to (iml words to express the
gratitude w hich f feel towards you for the interest you
have taken to relieve me in my distress. In the year
18-lg 1 contracted a heavy cold, which dually settled on
my lungs! in a lew months after 1 commenced coughing
and raising offensive matter, which smelt very bad.
Having heard that Sherman’s Lozenges were good for a
cough 1 tried a few boxes of them, but they had not the
least elf et in me. I then called in the best physic;ian m the
i place, who a tended me a few months, but without sin;
j cess; I then saw an advertisement in one of the city
papersof Wislar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry, of which 1
pur based three bottles, at the corner of Fulton and Nas-
I sau streets, but I could not perceive ti.e least beneficial
effect from it, on the contrary f think it was a great in
jury to me. Shortly after using it I commenced raising
| blood in large quantities; I was taken down sick and
confined to the iiou.se for three months, during which
tune I lost my appetiie, and f II away very fast; I was
then induced to consult Dr. Curlis of New York, (one of
; the best physiJans in the city,) but he could do me no
; good. 1 again became worse, and was confined to the
; house all last winter and spring, and I gave up all hope of
ever getting any better, as 1 again raised blood and my
cough was very severe; together with a pain in my breast
I and uuder the shoulder blade. M v friends now gave up
all hopcof my recovering, and thought every day was
the last. A Imut this time i heard of your BALAA M OF
JaIVERAVOKT bring good for consumption, but I was
| like many others, ■'•ui was fearful that it might be a regu
lar humbug; 1 however finally consented to try it, as 1
j thought it could make me no worse. My brother then
■ purchased a bottle of it at 375 Bowery, N. V. and f coin
; menced taking it, and by the time I had used one bottle j
full I could sleep all night, and in tlie morning I itad an ■
appetite for tm hreakfa-st. I'till keep on taking it and ■
I find great benefit from it —tbepaiuiu my breast isentire- ;
IlygOi.e.and 1 raise no more blood. W ithin the last two
months I have gained in weight six pounds and much in ,
j strong h. 1 would therefore advise all who have any
| affec ion of the Lungs or Liver to try the Genuine Dr. :
1 Taylor’s Balsam of Liverwort, for I truly believe it to
bethe best reinedy in existence for diseases of the Lungs
or Liver. Should any one doubt thy ibove statement re

have long i fgardi-d it as a most humiliating re
V V ticctioii upon the south, that no professedly neu

paper could not be supported at the immediate. South,
; and though mu wholly unsuccessful, our i xperience has
i laiigat us that the papers of this class published in tin
large Northern cities, possess advantages over those of
t eoinitrv, which, in a measure, dfy romped Jon. Hut
here the case is different. Bultanore. standing as t does
on the I n tier of tin* Southern - afes. is \t: near enough
j to the great commercial, literary and political eaiporiuni, i
to ti,- ini bided in the neightmrhood of great American
cities, and to enjoy all the adva tagis. as a radiating
point, winch are possess-d by tuber Bmladelphia, Boston

facilities lor obtaining the latcsl literary iicelligence, as
well as the current literature of the day , foreign and do- ;
nvstic, that are enjoyed by the journals -.1 the North-tii
cities. The Western Continent is as large, as cheap,
and can be better adapted to the wan s and tastes of South
ern readers, than those Northern papers which now draw
so large an amount of their patronage from the Southern
public.
Entertaining these views,’we have looked with confi
dence to the suctess of the Continent. Eight month’s
I experience has tended to strengthen ibatconfidence, and
now «-f enter upon its publication with a firm conviction
that all that is necessary to secure fur it a circulation
equal to tiiat of its N irtbern cotetnporarics, is a faithful
and energetic devotion of oar best abilities to niaae it a
useful and entertaining Family Journal. It is our de
sign to make the Western Continent emphatically a i
Southern family paper, that may be read with interest
and profit by every member of a Southern family.—
With this view, we shall draw for our Hierary depart
ment. from the best sources.such in itter as will interest
and entertain the inJid, without offending the tade or
orrupting tlie morals of our readers.
Pal ns w 111 be taken to give the at *--t intelligence on al

sion of the vast amount oflocal matter, such as personal
gossip, police reports, theatrical and other ciiticisms,

! the popular weeklies of the North. In a word, though
| we shall endeavor to make our paper interesting to all,
| our chief aim shall be to adapt it to the wants and tastes
i of the people of the .South and South-West, upon whom,
| and these of our own city who are disposed to sustain
j such a journal, we must mainly depend for support,
j R lying more upon the intrinsic merits of our paper,
; than on any promises we might make in a prospectus,
