the country , which, in a measure, d fy c.oinpe i.ion. But
lie.re the case is different. Baltimore, standing as t does
on the 1 o tier of (he Soutneru States, is yet near one gh
to tile great commercial, literary and political ‘-miKirium,
to be in< ludod in the neighborhood of great American
cities, and to enjoy all the advantages, as a radiating
point, whieo arc possessed by either Philadelphia, Boston
i r.V w York. A paper issued from Baltimore has all the
fa. ilities for obtaining ihe latest literary in elligence, as
well as the current literature of the day', foreign and do
: mystic, that are enjoyed by the journals of the North' rn
| cities. The Western Continent is as large, as cheap,
and can he better adapted to the wan , and tastes of South
ern readers, than those Northern papers w hich now draw
bo large an amount of their patronage from the Souther
public.
Entertaining these views, we have looked with confi
dence to the success of the Continent. Eight month's
j experience has tended to strengthen thatconfidcnce, mid
1 now we enter upon its publication with a firm conviction
! that all that is necessary to secure for it a circulation
! equal 10 that of its N inborn cotemporaries, is a faithful
; and energetic devotion of our best abilities to make it a
i useful and enter anting Finally Journal. It is our de
} sig n to make the Wes rcVts Continent emphatically a
! Southern family paper, that may be read with interest
i and profit by every member of a Southern family.
| With this view, we shall draw for oar literary de.part
j mein, from the best sources.such muter as will interest
! and emeitain the mind, without offending the taste or
■ orrupting the morals of our readers.
Pams will be taken to give, the atest intelligence on al
; subjects of interest to the general reader, to the exclu
: oiouofthe vast amount of local matter, such as personal
: gossip, police reports, theatrical and other criticisms,
! w Inch make up so large apo lion ofthe staple of some of
i the popular weekbes of the North. In a word, though
1 we shall endeavor t" make oar paper interesting to all,
! onr chief aim shall be to adapt it to the wants and tastes
! of the (wmpie ofthe South and South-Wo-t. upon whom,
j ami these of our own city who are disposed so sustain
j such a journal, we must mainly depend for support.
R lying more upon the intrinsic merits of our paper, I
I than on any promises we might make in a prospectus! !
i we will close by appealing to the readers of the South i
i and West for a share of that patronage which they so j
; liberally bestow upon the overgrown weeklies oi' the j
j North.

TO NEGLECT USING THE GENUINE
DR. TAYLOR’S BALSAM OF LIVERWORT.
375 Bowery, N. Y.
MUST those be who have Pulmonary Consumption,
or any affection of the Lungs. Liver or Chest,
| after reading ihe following letter, Just received from a
I m st respectable inhabitant of Westchester Couuty |
j NewY’oik.
Tarrytowm, Aug. 9, 1>44.
Dear Doctor—ls is difficult to find w ords to express the
gratitude which 1 feel towards you for the interest you
havetak n to relieve me in my distress. In the year
' Ifi-id 1 contracted a heavy cold, which finally settled on
| my lungs; in a lew mouths after I commenced coughing
and laising offensive matter, winch smell very bad'.
Having heard that Sherman's Lozenges were good for a
cough 1 tried a few boxes of them, but they had not the
leas t dice ton me, 1 then called in the best physic jan in the
; place, whoa tended me a few months, but without sue
cess; I then saw an advertisement in one ofthe cny
papersof Wislar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry, ol which j
| pur based three bottles, at thccorner of Fulton and Nas
{ sau streets, but I could not perceiv e t e least beneficial
i effect from it, ou the contrary 1 think it was a great in- 1
I jury to me. rSlioi tly after using it I coiumcnce.il raising i
1 blood in large quantities; 1 was taken down sick ai.d
; confined to the hou-e for three months, during which j
lime 1 lost my appetiieandf.il away very fast; 1 was j
| then induced to consult Dr. Curtis of New York, (one of |
! the best physicians in the city,) but he could do me no I
! good. I again became worse, and was confined to the
j house all last winter and spring, and I gave up all hope of
j ever getting any better, as I again raised blood and ray
cough was very severe, together with a pain in my brea.-t
j and under the shoulder blade. Mv friends now cave t*.p
! all hopeof my recovering, and thought every day was
i the last. About this time I heard of your BALSAM OF
: LIVERWORT being good for consumption, but I was
like many others, ’id was fearful that it might be a regu
lar humbug; i however finally consented to trv it, as t
thought it could make me no worse. My brother then
purchased a bottle of it at 375 Bowery, N. Y. and I com
menced taking it, and by the time 1 had used one hotde
full I could sleep all night, and in the morning Iliad an
appetite for my breakfast. Istill keep on taking it and
find great benefit from it—the pain in my breast istmtire
lygo.ie.and f rube no more blood. Within the last two
months I have gained in weight >ix pounds and much in
streng h. I would therefore advise all who have any
alloc iouof the Lungs or Liver to try the Genuine Dr.
Taylor’s Balsam of Liverwort, for I truly believe it to
bethe best remedy in existence for diseases of the Lungs
; or Liver. Should any one doubt the above statement re
lative to your valuable medicine, lot h.m call on me, and
1 will convince them of its virtue.
Yours respectfully, I)E REVERE.
