they would bear something—a rose-leaf pla
ced upon them would make our triumph
most complete. Is it sufficient that we give
excellent advice to those who ‘‘the primrose
paths of dalliance tread;’’ is it sufficient that
we steep them to the very lips in apothegan
and moral exhortation? No, there yet wants
something to crown the labour—the rose-leaf
of example. We may hastily pass an object
of chanty, and with our best wishes to alle
viate the sufferings of the unfortunate, suffer
not ourselves to take the trouble of retracing
our path to confront the petitioner. Oh,
what are charitable feelings, although over
flowing the heart, unless they bear upon
them something else than theoretical benevo
lence!—let us place upon them the odorous
rose-leaf of practice. When the bigotry, the
persecution, the uncharitableness of mankind
is poured down on some devoted head. let us
not mingle in the overwhelming torrent; let
us not add to its strength, but yield up a
sweet and cheering offering, the rose-leaf of
compassion. When we feel ourselves sink
ing beneath the waters of affliction, let us
not give ourselves, with reckless indifference,
to the potency of that which oppresses us;
but rather let the beauty and the perfume of
hope be seen in a rose-leal upon the flood, a
leaf in which our spirit may sail securely,
although the lightning flashes from above,
and the earth trembles from beneath.
We might pursue this subject to any
length, without fear of being charged with
repetition, from a want of apt similitudes.
The matter is a most fertile and beautiful
one; but v\e proffer it thus briefly, that it may
excite useful reflection, rather than by a
needless verbodity out-weary it. A simple
stone, the record, of a sentence, will some
times awaken deeper attention chan a gigan
tic edifice and a finely turned homily. The
brief exhortation. “Remember thou art a
man,” must sometimes have reached wish
greater force, the heart of the monarch ol
old, than if he had assembled bis priests. Ins
magicians and his soothsayers, to hold forth
on the state of m rtality, and on ail earth’s
vanities.

Dear Sir: lam well aware that persons of

DR. WISTAR’S BALSAM OF WILD

have been predisposed to itmyself. About one yea
ago I was quite sick fora number of weeks, con
fined to my bed when the pain in my side would
allow me to lay. My physician pronounced my
disease Liver Complaint; my liver was very
much enlarged, I raised blood several times; the
pain in my side was so severe that the cars pass
ing in the street by the door affected tpe. J was
cupped, hied and had various other remedies ap

my physician said he could not cure me. f ex

the workmanship in consideration. 1 util war
rant my gins to make cotton equal to any made on

true stapie of the cotton and, making it perfectly
free of knap and clear of moats. 51 y gins will he

All orders addressed to the subscriber will meet

I will say to the planters who may favor Mr.
i Hammack with their patronage I will exert all the
I ability 1 have in superintending the shop; and
| every gin sent from the shop shall he in complete
' order, and warranted tube the cheapest gins ever

Dear Sir: I have used the Gin bought of you
for two years ami 1 very cheerfully recommend it
to the Cotton planters of Ogleihorpe and otner
1 counties of Georgia. It turns off sufficiently fist
! to make good Colton —H being 50 saws—will throw
out about 800 lb. of lint a day. The quality of lire
Colton has in Augusta ranged half cent h.gber at
each of my sales than other sales of those days, and
it inis been pronounced by those considered com

Gin. V ours very respectfully,

Oglethorpe Countt, April 22,-1847.
I have used for the lasi three years a machine
that was made by S. R. Crenshaw, of Crawford*
ville. I consider itoiie of the best Gins I have
ever seen. Two small mules will gin, with a
great deal of ease, three bales perday, and i do not
j think there is a gin m Georgia that can excel it in
i making fine cotton. In fact, 51r. Crenshaw has
j sold a great many gins in this county and Elbert,
j and 1 think that every man who has purchased is
j perfectly satisfied. All of his gins which have
j been sold in this county, and they are nut a lew,
j run light, pick fast, and w hat is better than ail,
I w hen the cotton is carried to market it sells for the
1 very highest price. C. S. sJerriwetukr.
