following correspondence between the Committee of Arrangements and Mr. Webster, has been handed us for publication. AUGUSTA, 7th May, 1847. To the Hon. Daniel Webster ; Sir :—The citizens of Augusta, received with more than ordinary pleasure, the intelligence of your intention to visit the Southern States, dur ing Spring. Considerations personal to yourself, awakcn'ng a feeling of national pride, and blending with a cherished attachment to thut portion of the confederacy with w hose destiny your own is most intimately connected, have excited an earnest desire to greet you as the guest of their city. In the hope that you will obligingly add to the estimation in which they hold you as an American Statesman, the charm of personal acquaintance, they have depu ted the undersigned to invite you here, and to render you their hearty, though unpretending, hospitality. Not permitting ourselves to anticipate disap pointment, we have only to request that you will xindly inform us, at what time our fellow citizens may hope to see you. With assurances of the personal gratification ws feel in the performance of this dutvg^* We are, repeclfully, Your fellow-citizens. [Signed hy the Committee ] CHARLESTON, May lOth, 1817. Gentlemen. —Your exceedingly obliging and friendly letter of the 7th inst., has been received. The kind and warm manner in which you tender me the hospitalities of the citizens of Augusta, cannot but excite grateful feelings, and hearty returns of good wdl. 1 hope to see Augusta, and its citizens, and enjoy a day among them, in such intercourse as may be most free from constrain! •nd formality. lam bound hence to Columbia ; and my purpose is to travel from Columbia to Au gusta, on Saturday next, to stay in Augusta un til Tuesday morning, and on that morning pro ceed to Savannah. Circumstances haveoccurred to occasion me so much delay at the North, that I must expedite my journey, as far as practica ble, for the residue of the time remaining at my disposal. lam quite aware, that there are men and things, very desirable to be seen, between Augusta and Savannah; but such is the neces sity ofthe case, that I shall tic obliged to go to Savannah, when I lea v e you, in the most expedi tious manner. I shall be expected in Savannah, on Tuesday, the 18th, at night. If anything should occur to detain me longer at Columbia, 1 will endeavor to give you notice. I pray you, gentlemen, to accept my thanks, for your personal civility, and allow me to recip rocate all regard and good wishes. DAN’L. WEBSTER. Addressed to the Committee. Inrrcnur ot Pont Office ICevonue. We learn from the Union, that for the quarter j ending March, 1817, compared with the quarter for the some period last year, the increase of lev- ' time at the Baltimore post office, was S3,HB; at | Annapolis $513; Boston $1,503; Philadelphia $3,797; Richmond $522; Cincinnati $1,559, with a proportionate increase at others. The Union, in j giving the returns from nineteen offices, says: The comparison of the above offices, and thirty or forty others, indicate an increase of the reve nues of the department for the of the year 1815, of a little over 17 percent. We are satisfied that the above statistics will j afford great pleasure to the friends of the low- { postage system. It is undergoing the same im- ; in this country as it has done in Great Britain. The revenue is annually increasing, and we have no doubt at no very distant day the post ! office will support itself wit hunt drawing upoutlic general treasury for any support. . A Good Business* The New fyteans Delta of the 7ih inst, say? — The profit made by Ihe Cotton planters on the Bagging and R >pe which was used around the last crop of Colton, amounted to more than one mil. lion of dollars! This enormous profit, which al most exceeds belief, is easily calculated, by esti mating the gross sales of the Bagging and Rope on each bale, when sold by weight with the Col ton, and deducting therefrom the first cost per yard and per pound. Thus: 6 yard of Bagging on each bale, averaging *1) lbs. weight per yd., will weigh 91 lbs., w hich, at 1‘) cents per lb., will ne 97 cts. 6 pound* of Rope on each bale, at 10 cts. per lb., will be *"» 60 cts. The gross sales of the baling, therefore, w ill he, per bale, 157 cts. From this deduct the average cost, at last year's prices, of— -6 yds. Bagging, say at 10 cts. per yd. 00 cts. 6 ibs. KJpe, say at 4i cts. per lb. 27 “ Total cost of both, per bale, 87 cts. The difference between the gross sales, say $1 57 psr bale, and the first cost, say 87 cts. per bale, is 70 rents. From this deduct 5 cents per bale, for pro rata, commissions, freight and other expenses, | which will leave a nett profit of 63 cents per bale. I 1,800,000 bales Cotton, at 65 cents profit per bale, will give the grand total of $1,170,000 clear profit : on the Bagging and Rope, over and above all costs I and charges. Democratic Convention.
