Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry.
The following lelter from the Rev. HENRY
WOOD, of Concord, N. IL, editor of the Cong res
sional Journal, a religions newspaper of a high
character, speaks volumns in favor of the good
qualities of Wi-lar’s Balsam :
Concord, N. If.,March 2, ’346.
Mr. S. W. Fovvle—Dear Sir: Two years ago
the past winter, a sudden and violent attack upon
my Jungs by exposure to cold, confined me to my
room and bed for several weeks; and when I re
covered I w is so much oppressed hy difficulty in
breathing, that I was incapable of fast walking and
violent exerci-c, and often uus unable to sleep or
rest upon a bed by night. The Buffering was fre
quently extreme, and judging from the inefllcacy
of the remedies used, 1 supposed the disease incura
ble. Being persuaded to try a bottle of W istar’s
Balsam of Wild Cherry, without the least confi
dence in its efficacy or that of any other prescrip
tion, no one can fully understand my surprise and
joy, vvh-ii I found the difficulty almost entirely re
moved before one bottle was used up. Having a
ui trial aversion to ra -dicine, and s-ldom using it
many form, nothing hut sympathy with my fellow
sufferers induces me to make this public si item*, nt
and recommend the article toothers similarly af*
tin led. Willi respect, yours truly.

from the high state of jicrlection to which the ap

produced which is calculated to be, and has been
of more benefit to the worl I, than any other dis

week by the almost unprecedented stringency of
the money market; demand in consequence limit

L! V ERI’OOL, May 3rd*—Since the departure
of flie las? steamer. 20lh tilt., there has been a
panic in the Money Ma ket with a pre.-ure quite,
unexampled oflitc years. Higher rates have been
paid on discounts of bills than even in 1837 and
1839, and during some days the most undoubted
paper could not be discounted on any terms. The
apprehended consequence of a continuance of this
state of things have been strongely pressed on the
Government and the Bank of England from vari
ous quarters, and though it is understood that the
la ter lias relaxed in some degree and discounted
rather more freely the last few days, yet the seve
rity of the pressure is only very partially relieved,
notwithstanding the accounts that the Russian Go
vernment is about to invest upwards of two mil
lions sterling of its gold in the English funds.—
From the situation of the. Bank it is evident that
it must maintain a very restrictive course, and there
seems no reason to look for anything but the con
tinuance of a very stringent money market and a
high rate of interest, at 1 asl until w c have a pret
ty satisfactory assurance as to the result of the next
harvest. This panic has of course been severely
felt on the Cotton trade of the country, causing
spinners tocotinue or extend their system of work
ing short time, until now ike consumption is pro
bably reduced to one-half; and a great degree of
gloom prevails throughout the manufacturing dis
tricts. Our Cotton market has been better sus
tained than might have been expected (under the
* influence of the short crop accounts) hut has de
clined id per lb. The sales for the week ending
the 30th til l .. amounted to 23,900 hales, of which
5230 were I pland til 6 a 6J, 10,100 Orleans at 6 a

Mobile at 51 a7, and 100 Sea Island at 12 a 20d
per lb. About 1500 bales were taken on specula
tion during the week. The busine.-s on Saturday,
the Ist inst., was7ooo bales, and to-day about 4000
have been sold. Os Saturday’s business 3000 bales
were taken on spero’ation, hut the spcculati ve de

I MOBILE, May 17— Cotton. —The receipts

e j period, 531 G bales. The stock on hand and ship
board not cleared is 112/2IS bales, against 102,260
i same time last season,
e I Our last review closed on a dull market ronse-
j quently on an indisposition to operate to any ev
j lent pending the expected advices fiom Europe,
I ' which was shared equally between buyers ami
; sellers. Middling cottons were quoted at lo| a
11 i cents. This condition of tht* market continued
1 up to Tuesday evening—the sales for the three
i, i days reaching only 1500 bales, and prices remain*
| ing without apparent change. About the middle,
! of the day on Wednesday a good demand sprung
• ( up. purchasers taking some i‘2oo bales at full
J | prices, ami creating the impression that the C’ale
! donia’s accounts had been received by private cx-
I press. On Thursday the telegraphic advices hy
the steam r came through, which though brief,
were sufficient to show an advance in the Liver
i pool market, and during the day 1000 bales chang
j »-d hands sit a slight improvement in rales. The
; I circulars and private correspondence came to hand
s by Friday’s mail, and although they concur in
giving a considerable advance in the prices of
f cotton, there is some little discrepancy in tlmir
, details w hich it is not for us to adjust. After their
examination, some 1200 bales were disposed of at
prices indicated by our quotations though the mar
*• ket is unsettled, many factors claiming an advance.
I : which buyers refu-e. The sales of the week
1 amount only to 4.900 bales. The advance in this
market, is about fc. on last wvek’s quotations.

The period has arrived when it is proper to rc-
I fertolhe indications in regard tothe prospects of
j the planters for the new year. Until within some
• ; ten days the general tenor of advices from the
. | country was favorable, the stands for cotton and
j ; corn both being considered good. Since then,
j however, we regret to learn that the cold nights
1 j and prevalent north winds have, had an injurious
i ! effect upon the young cotton, giving it what plan
. | ters cad the “sore shin.” and producing insects
i that have already w rought injury to the plant. On
j the river and low lands many planters have been
| compelled to plough up and replant their grounds,
r I and the uplands have also stiff-red the same way,
s though to a limited extent. The crop is backward
for the. season, and should the prevailing cool
weather continue much longer ir must abridge tlie
■production. These remarks apply to the region
that looks to this place as a market.
» Freight*. —Foreign are exceedingly dull. A few
! hundred hales have been shipped to Liverpool al
• ; 9-16 d.. within the past two days. To other for
| cign ports there is nothing doing, nor has there
j been an engagement for two weeks—and it has
■ | been fully five months since an American ship was
, j taken for Liverpool. Coastwise—For New York,
| owing to tlie scarcity of suitable vessels, the pac
j kets have all been enabled lo obtain an advance.
I The shipments of the week have been nt Jc. The
• ; arrivals from sea have been quite few for some
I i time past, and the tonnage in port is unusually
| small compared with the wants.
