Tuts valuable preparation combines all the !
medicinal virtues of those articles, which long ;
experience has pfoved to possess the most safe
and efficient alterative and deobstfuent properties,
or the cure of Scrofula, KiAg’s Evil, White Swell
ings, hirers. Scrofulous, Cancerous and Indolent
Tumours; Mercurial and Syphilitic Affections, K!\eu

ments or of the Ovaries, Liver, Spleen, Kidneys, Jj-r.

and I Acer Complaint, Nen'ous Diseases, Dropsical I
Stcellings. Constitutional Disorders and diseases ori- j
ginating from a depraved or Impure stale of the
Blood or other fluids of the body. •
The proprietor of this Alterative would most re
-8 tectfully assure the public that he has not offered
tnis preparation to their notice without due reflec
tion, and close and rigid study, nor until after
twelve years’.experience had manifested its great
superiority over every other article of the kind,—
and he now recommends it with confidence, fully
believing that the above combination of medicines
will effectually eradicate from the system a class
ot diseases some of which have heretofore been con
sidered incurable.
lie has prescribed it in almost every variety of
diseases and with unparalleled success, especially ;
in cutaneous affections, cancerous, scrofulous and 1
scorbutic diseases, and diseases originating from
obstruction or enlargement of the glands or impuri
ty of the blood.
-Cancer and Cancerous Tumors.
He has used this preparation in upwards of twen
ty well defined cases of cancer and cancerous tu
mors, and in every case but one with perfect and
entire success.
Bronchocele or Goitre, (Swelled Neck.)
He has prescribed it iu over a hundred cases of i
goitre, and it has never failed iu a single instance to
completely remove the disease. Not a solitary i
case of failure. All were cured.
The success he has met with in curing broncho
eele and cancerous affections has convinced him 1
that these dangerous and horrible diseases may be j
removed with as much certainty as Fever and *
Ague. He does not wish to be understood as say- j
ing that they can be cured as soon as Fever and
Ague, but with as much certainty; and further, that
be has good reason for believing that this prepartfe
tion will not only cure these diseases when formed,
hut that it destroys the virus or poisonous principle
lurking in the system, from which that peculiar
class of diseases, as well as that of scrofula emanate
Scrofula—King’s Evil.
This preparation has been used in numerous
cases of scrofula, King's Evil, and scrofulous swell
ings, and always with the most decided success.
Skin Diseases.
He has prescribed it in a great variety of cutane
ous affections, and foumhit successful in curing salt
rheum or fetter, biles, blotches, pimples, morphew
and jaundiced skin, <Sec.
Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint,
It has been used in numerous cases of liver com
plaint and Dyspepsia, and with the happiest effect. I
Tic-Donloureux.
It lias been used in several cases of Neuralgia,
and in every case it was successful.
Rheumatism.
This preparation has been prescribed in a great
many eases of chronic rheumatism, and in every
case in which it was used until the system became
effected by the medicine, tiie disease was removed.
Gout.
A number of ca<es of gout have been nrnetf ?>v i
this preparation. Jn one of these cases, the man
bad been afflicted with it so severely for thirteen
y ears as to entirely disable him from business, and
for live months immediately previous to his taking
the Alterative he had been confined to his room;
hut before he had finished the third bottle, he was
enabled to walk about the streets and soon after re
turned to his business, from which he had so long
been excluded by his affliction.
Dropsical Swellings.
This medicine increases the powers of digestion
-excites the absorbents into healthy exercise, by
which watery or calcareous depositions, and all un
natural enlargements are reduced. It imparts
tune and vitality to the whole system, removing |
sick and morbid headaches, giddiness, wandering
pains and nervous affections.
In fact, in every case where the medicine has
been taken for some time, no matter for what pur
pose, the general health of the patient has always
been improved by it.
In conclusion, the proprietor would say that some
«f the most astonishing cases of skin diseases, can
cer, bronchocele. and scrofula, have been cured by
this medicine, that have ever been recorded; but
want of room in this sheet precludes their pubiica- i
tion at this time.
Cancer.
A n interesting case cured by Jayne's Alterative.
In the spring of 1831, a cancerous tumor appear
ed in the right breast of Mrs. Phoebe, wife of Peter
Stretch, of Salem N. J. It was examined by many
Phvsicians, and was considered by all as cancerous,
and besides bore all the characteristic marks of
one. All probable means of removing it were used
without the slightest benefit. It continued to in
crease both in size and painfulness, until all hope
of saving her life, but by a painful operation, was
abandoned, which, after a consultation of eminent
Physicians, was performed, Jan Ist, 1832, by Dr. i
John Rhea Barton, assisted by Dr. Redman, the
proprietor, and two other medical gentlemen. The
whole and entire right breast was removed, and af
ter examination of the tumor, was pronounced by
all present a cancer of the most malignant charac
ter. In about three months, after enduring incredi
ble sufferings, she was enabled, though broken in
■pirit, to get about again. She remained feeble,
and her general health was exceedingly bad, as in
deed it had been for several year* before. In the
spring of 1837, upwards of fire years after her breast
had been removed, a painful tumor made its ap
pearance on the right side, immediately over the
Earl formerly occupied hy the nipple of the right
reast, previous to it* removal. This tumor steadi
ly increased for several months, and became so
painful as to deprive her of rest. The glands un
der the right arm were enlarged; and scirrhus, and
ahan], irregular, and at times painful tumour, ap
peared in the left breast. ,\o operation could now
arrest the disease. Indeed her whoie body appear
td to he a mass of disease. Her case was consid
ered hopeless. She was of a very scrofulous habit,
eoth her parents having died of Pulmonary con
bumption. The experiment was now made with
shis Alterative. It was at first given in small doses,
three times a day, and the doses very gradually,
hut steadily increased daily, as long as she took it,
which was about six months, and the skin over and
around the tumour was wet night and morning with
a strong solution of lodine and Hydriodate Potash.
The tumour continued increasing in size for about
six weeks, and was at times very painfid, when the
pain suddenly ceased altogether, and the tumour
swelled out at the base, and became soft, and then
began to diminish, and continued gradually decreas
ing until every vestige of disease was removed.—
The tumour in her left breast, and those in her
right exilia were also dispersed. No cancerous or
♦orofulous tumours ever appeared afterwards; and
her general health? which had been so had for four
teen years as to make life a burthen, was effectu
ally and permanently restored. The proprietor is
in possession of the diseased breast, and those who
choose may examine it. He would also say that
he could mention over a dozen cases equally inter
esting, wherein his Alterative has subdued cancer
and cancerous tumours, but he has not room here
to record them.
Mrs. Sarah Young, of Quinton’s Bridge, N. J., had
a goitrous tumour on the left side of her windpipe,
as large as the half of an orange, which was cured
by using this Alterative for about four months,
Miss H S , South Fourth-street, Phila
delphia, was also cured of an enlargement of the
throat, which filled the entire space between the
chin and breast-bone, and extended around on each
side of her neck to behind her ears, and from her
•ars to her shoulders, and produced awful deformi
ty. It commenced growing when she was but five
rears old, and continued gradually to increase un
id she was nineteen, at which time she commenced
using this Alterative, which she took for seven
months, which entirely reduced the enlargement;
and she has now as smooth and pretty a neck as can
h« found. The proprietor is not at liberty to give
her name in print, but will refer persons to her.

I Dr. M. H oodnff- —Dear Sir .—I owe you an apol
°g.V for not acknowledging before this the receipt
ot a box of your Dysentery Cordial, which you had
the kindness to send me while in Columbus, tor the
use of my corps.
1 have found it a most valuable Medicine, and
only regret that I have not a supply of it. Where
ever my men have followed directions they have
invariably found relief. We have suffered and are
suffering much from Dysentery occasioned by the
wretched water we have to drink, but your Cor

With my sincere thanks for your kindness, and
best wishes for your success, I am your obedient
servant.

Dr. Woodruff —My Dear Sir A few days since
I received the Cordial which you were good enough
to send me. My friend, Col. Seahoni Jones, would
have part of it; the remainder I have laid aside for
use when I may need it.
On the other page I have added a statement of
my appreciation of it as a Medicine.
Having used the Cordial of Dr. M. Woodruff. I
do not hesitate to pronounce it a most valuable
; Medicine. Indeed, for such affections of the bow
; els as we sometimes suffer with in the South, 1
know nothing at all equal to it.

DR. LE ROY’S
VEGETABLE UNIVERSAL PILLS.
THE startling drawback on nearly aid Medicinal
Agents lias ever been that in their process of pur
gation and purification, they have aUo Debilitated
the System. Hence Purgative Medicines have al
ways been regarded as' at best but a Necessary
Evil; Patients resorting to them for the relief of
one disease at the expense of another. 7’o obviate
this, Physicians have long sought for an Agent that
would at the same time
PURGE PURIFY AND STRENGTHEN.
But their efforts were nearly fruitless, and they
had almost despaired of success when the labors of
science and research, were rewarded by a discov
ery which fully realized the fondest desires of the
Medical Faculty, and which is justly regarded as
one of the most important Triumphs that Pharmacy
has ever achieved. This important desideratum is
named
Dr. Le Boy’s Vegetable Universal Pills*
W hich Purify the Blood, and remove ail corrupt
and vitiated humors, and unhealthy accumulations from
the body in a manner never before rivalled, and
which yet produce no weakness or lassitude what
ever, but on the contrary, tone the Stomach, and
invigorate the constitution during the progress of
their operation. Dr. Le Roy’s Pills, in fact, unite
those heretofore irreconcilable, but most desirable
qualities, Evacuation and Invigoraiion, for they are
at the same time a STRENGTHENING PURGA
TIVE, AND A PURIFYING TONIC.
7he two principal ingredients in Dr, Lc Roy's
Pills are
WILD CHERRY & SARSAPARILLA.
So prepared that each promotes the beneficial ef
fect of the other, the former strengthening, while
the latter, through its union with various vegetable
ingredients, evacuates and purifies; thus they su
perinduce no torpidity or lassitude of the the Diges
tive Functions, and hence their operations are at
tended by no Re-action or Subsequent Costiveness.
Dr. Le Roy’s Pills are the most active and search
ing Medicine in existence. They at once attack
the very root of Diseases, and their action is so
prompt that in an hour or two after they are taken,
the patient is aware of tbeir good effects. 7’hey
not only operate on the Blood, but also on the chyle,
of which the Blood is formed, and this secures good
blood from the fountain head, moreover, they pro
duce neither nausea, griping or debility, and as a
family medicine they have no rival. Price 23 cts.

GALVANIC RINGS AND
Magnetic Fluid,
riIUIS remarkable invention, which has received
E the almost universal approbation of the Medi
cal Profession of Great Britain, comprises an en
tirely new application of Galvanism, as a remedial
agent, by means of which the ordinary Galvanic
Batteries, Electric and Magnetic Machines, Ac.,
are entirely dispensed with, and the mysterious
powers of Galvanism applied without any of the
objections which are inseparable from the general
mode now in use. The strong doses, and at irreg
ular intervals, in which Galvanism is applied by the
Machines, has been pronounced after a fair and im
partial trial, to be decidedly injurious, and it was to
rembdV this radical defect, that this new applica
tion was projected, which after unceasing toil and
perseverance has been brought to its present state
of perfection. The Galvanic Rings answer all the
purposes of the most expensive Machines, and in
many other respects are more safe and certain in
accomplishing the desired effect.
The Galvanic Rings, used in connection with the
Magnetic Fluid, are confidently recommended in
all disorders vjiieh arise frtffn an enfeebled or un
healthy stair of the nervous or vital system, and those
complaints are among the most painful and univer
sal to which we are subject. They arise, without
exception, to one single cause—a derangement of
the Nervous system —and it was in these cases that
other “ remedies ” having so often failed, a new
agent was greatly needed, which it is confidently
believed, has been found in the proper and judi
cious application of Galvanism.
The Galvanic Rings have been used With tmtife
success in all cases of Rheumatism, acute or chronic,
applying to the head, face or limbs; Gout, Tic-
Doloreux, Toothache, Bronchitis, Vertigo, Nervous
or Sick Headache, Indigestion, Paralyses, Palsy,
Epilepsy, Fits, Cramp, Palpitation of the Heart, Ap
poplexy, Stiffness of Joints, Spinal Complaints, Lum
bago, Neuralgia, Xerrovs Tremors, Dizziness of the
Head, Pains in the Chest and Side , General Debil
ity, Deficiency of Nervous and Physical Energy, and
all Nervous Disorders. In cases of confirmed Dys
pepsia, which is simply a nervous derangement of
the digestive organs, they have been found equally
successful. Their extraordinary effects upon the
system must be witnessed to be believed, and as a
certain Preventive for the preceding complaints
they are equally recommended. The Rings arc of
different prices, being made of all sizes, and of va
rious ornamental patterns, and can be worn by the
most delicate female without the slightest incon
venience. In fact the sensation is rather agreea
ble than otherwise.
The Galvanic Belts, Bracelets, Bands,
Garters, Necklaces, Ac,
In some cases of a very severe character and of
long standing the power as applied by the Galvanic
Rings is not sufficient to arrest the progress of dis
ease and ultimately to restore health. The improv
ed modification in the Galvanic Belts, Bracelets,
entirely remedies this objection ; any degree
of power that is required can readily be obtained,
and no complaint which the mysterious agent of
Galvanism can effect will fail to be permanently re
lieved. These articles are adapted to the waist, anus,
wrists, limbs, ancles, or any part of the body w ith
perfect Convenience. The Galvanic Necklaces, are
used With greater benefit in cases of Bronchitis or
affections of tbe throat generally ; also in cases of
Nervous Deafness; and with almost uniform success
as a preventive for Apoplexy , Epileptic Fits, and
similar complaints.
CHRISTIE’S MAGNETIC FLUID.
Is issued in connection with the Galvanic Rings,
and all their modifications. This composition has
been pronounced by the French.Chte'ofists to be
one of the most extraordinary discoveries of mod
ern science. It is believed to possess a remarkable
power of rendering the Nerves sensitive id Galvanic
action, by these means causing a circulation (4 fl*e
influence at the seat of disease, and thus giving ra
pid and permanent relief. No other composition in
chemistry is known to produce the same effect or
to impart a similar property to the nervous system
by means of an outward local application. The
Magnetic Fluid contains nothing capable of the
slightest injury, its application is agreeable, and it
is as harmless in its action as it is beneficial in its
result. The combined inventions are in every way
perfectly harmless ; they are at prices within reach
of all, and the discoverer only requests a fair trial,
as a test of their surprising efficacy and permanent
benefit.
Christie’s Galvanic Strengthening Plas
ters.
These form another valuable application
and the mysterious influence of Galvanism. They
are too important adjuncts to the genuine Galvanic 1
Rings and their modifications, acting upon the I
same principle, but having this advantage of more
local application. They are confidently recom
mended as a valuable addition in the speedy cure
of Rheumatism, acute or chronic ; in ail nervous
complaints, and as a positive remedy in cases of
Pain and Weakness in the Chest or Back, Pain in
the Side, Asthmatic Affections, and in Weakness
or Oppression of the Pulmonary Organs. In Spi
nal Complaints, their effects are of the most decided
character, and they have often been used with
complete success. They are also of the greatest
advantage hi Pains and Weakness of the Breast,
and are highly recommended for many of those
complaints to which females are especially liable.
As an effectual means for Strengthening the sys
tem when debilitated by disease or other causes;
as a certain aid in Constitutional Weakness, as a
Preventive, for Colds, and in all affections of the
Chest, generally, the Galvanic Strengtlxmmg Plas
ter, will be found of great and permanent advantage,
lu a few words, it embraces all the virtues of the
best tonic preparation with the important addition
of the Galvanic influence, which is neither impair
ed or exhausted, while tbe action continues. These
articles will be found entirely free from those ob
jections which are a constant source of complaint
with the ordinary Plasters in common use.

HOW AWFULLY CULPABLE^
TO NEGLECT USING THE GENUINE
DR. TAYLOR’S BALSAM OF LIVER WORT, j
375 Bowery, N. Y.
MUST those be who have Pulmonary Consump
tion. or any affection of the Lungs, Liver or
Chest, after reading the following letter, just re
ceived from a most respectable inhabitant of West
chester County New York.
Takkvtown, Aug. 9, 1844.
Dear Doctor—lt is difficult to find words to ex- j
press the gratitude which I feel towards you for
the interest you have taken to relieve me in my
distress. In the year 1842 I contracted a heavy
cold, which finally settled on my lungs; in a few
months after, I commenced coughing and raising
offensive matter, which smelt very had. Having
heard that Sherman’s Lozenges were good for a
coughs I tried a few boxes of them, but they bad
not the least effect on me. I then called in the
best physicians in tiie place, who attended me a i
few months, but without success; I then saw an ad- |
vertisement in one of the city papers of Wistar’s
Balsam of Wild Cherry, of which I purchased three |
bottles, at the corner of Fulton and Nassau streets, i
but 1 could not perceive the least beneficial effect 1
from it, on the contrary 1 think it was a great in- |
jury to me. Shortly after using it, 1 commenced
raising blood in large quantities; 1 was taken down
sick and confined to the house for three months,
during which time 1 lost my appetite and fell away
very fast; I was then induced to consult Dr. Curtis
i of New York, (one of the best physicians in the
city,) but he could do me no good. I again became
\ worse, and was confined to the house all last winter
and spring, and I gave up all hope of ever getting
any better, as I again raised blood and my cough
was very severe, together with a pain in my
breast and under the shoulder blade. My friends
now gave up all hope of my recovering, and thought
every day was the last. About this lime I heard
of your BALSAM OF LIVERWORT being good
for consumption , but I was like many others, and
was fearful that it might be a regular humbug; I
however finally consented to try it, as I thought it
could make me no worse. My brother then pur
chsed a bottle of it at 375 Bowery, N . Y., and 1
commenced taking it, and by the time I had used
one bottle full I could sleep all night, and in the
morning I had an appetite for my breakfast. I still
keep on taking it and find great benefit from it—the
pain in my breast is entirely gone, and I raise no
more blood. Within the last two months I have
gained in weight six pounds and much in strength.
I would therefore, advise all who have any aflec
tion of the Lungs or Liver to try the Genuine Dr,
Taylor’s Balsam of Liverwort, for I truly believe
it to be the best remedy in existence for diseases
of the Lungs or Liver. Should any one doubt the
above statement relative to your valuable medicine,
let him call on me, and I will convince him of its
virtues. Yours, respectfully, DE REVERE.
Beware of counterfeits, the only genuine has an
engraved label (over the outside wrapper of each
bottle) with the signature of Dr. GLRDON J.

The great demand for this most important work,

j for the married, as it discloses important secrets
which should be known to them particularly.—
Here every female can discover the causes, symp
toms, and the most efficient remedies and most
certain mode of cure, in every' complaint to which
her sex is subject.
It is an important question to the manned why it
is, that w'e behold so many married females sickly,
: debilitated, and prostrated ? as, also, the causes,
i and whether they are susceptible of remedy. They
i will here find those important matters, connected
j with discoveries in medical and physiological sci
; ence, which meet this question.
This work is destined to be in the hands of every
wife and mother who has a regard for her own
health and welfare, as well as that of her husband.
The revelations contained in its pages have al
ready proved a blessing to thousands as the innu
merable letters received by the author will attest.
It is of course impossible to convey more fullv,
in a public journal, the various subjects treated of,
as they are of a nature strictly intended for the
j married or those contemplating marriage ; neither
| is it necessary, since it is every' one's duty to be

ings to which a w ife, a mother, or a sister may be
subject, can be obviated.

NO MORE WHITE, GREY OR RED
HAIR.
A REMEDY which enhances considerably the
beauty and alters the appearance of the coun
j tenance from that which is much disliked. It is
j pleasing to have efficient means to remove these
j defects. To effect this change of hair so much
1 wished for, is the grand and never failing property
of JULES HAUEL’S VEGETABLE LIQUID
HAIR DYE, which the proprietor can with justice I
state, is far beyond any thing of the kind ever yet
known in this or aiy other country. Its properties
are very powerful though very innocent. This
chemical result is a wonder, as it enables persons
to dye instantaneously their hair without the least
inconvenience. For changing red or gray hair,
whiskers, eyebrows, &c. to a brown, black, or
ches'nut dolor. The slightest evil consequences
need not be feared from its use—it is altogether
harmless. This composition is the only one sanc
tioned by the science of chemistry to dye, in an in
delible manner, the various gradations of colors,
without danger or inconvenience and has justified
the liberal patronage and unlimited confidence of
the public. If black is required, ask for box mark
ed N., if hrmni, box marked B.
