I.J Cotton. —Before closing our remarks it may be expected of us to make some allusion to the probable supply for the coming season. — This we have ever deemed an extremely deli cate matter to touch upon, as it involves in terests of vast importance, and is wrapt in so much uncertainty at this early period of the season that an indulgence in any thing like a positive estimate would' be an unpardonable presumption. Nevertheless we may bo per mitted to speak of present prospects, so far as regards the region of the country tributary to this market; and these Ave are happy to state, would seem to indicate a more favorable result than was attained last year. It is true that the crop is late, generally; and in many sec tions complaint is made of damage by rust, and the ravages of the boll-worm, which arc consequences of the excessive rains in June and July, and to which avg have frequently alluded in our usual market re]>orts. But within tire past few weeks the weather (with the exception of the last few days, when rains again been rather frequent) has been 1 highly auspicious for the maturing of the crops; ! and should a long and favorable picking sea son ensue, it may reasonably be expected that something like an average yield may be secured; though it is confidently asserted that, xvhat with the backwardness of the plant, the dam age by rust, boll-worm, &c., under no future circumstances can a full crop be made; and l even the present comparatively favorable pros pects would be blighted to a serious extent by an early frost. In addition to this, and as a further modification of the comparatively en couraging prospects alluded to above, we are sorry to remark that within the last day or two well authenticated accounts have been re ceived from the interior, declaring in positive terms that the real caterpillar or array worm —the same species that caused such destruc tion to the crops last year—has made its ap pearance in several sections of Louisiana, and ! Mississippi, producing much alarm among the i planters. It is hoped, however, that the late- ; ness of its appearance —which is not so early i by nearly one month as last year—will enable the plant to make such progress, before the | worms, by successive reproductions, become ; very numerous, as will protect the planters from the sweeping destruction which blighted their hopes last year. It cannot be disguised, however, that much apprehension prevails; and the progress of the next few weeks will be watched with intense interest. The first two bales of the new crop came to hand on the 9th August; being two days later than the first receipt last year; and the total receipts of the new growth up to this date are 1089 bales, against 140 bales to same date last year, 6846 in 1845, and 5720 in 1844. The quality of that received thus far promises avcll j for the character of the crop; being generally i of good staple, and mostly ranging from Mid- i dling Fair to Good Fair. Since the first two or three bales, which, as usual brought fancy | prices, some 350 bales have been sold, at 11A a 12A cents per lb. The sales of old crop du ring the past few days have been at 10| a 11 cents for Middling to Good Middling; but ] since the reports of the appearance of the cat erpillar the few lots on hand are held higher, 1 and the mark*. { is unsettled. His first and second improve ments, made the quality of cotton perfect, though some were rather slow, his third made them suffi ciently fast, it then only remained to make them more durable and convenient, which has been done effectually, by several new improvements tbe pre sent year; besides, he has the exclusive right ol the State, and the privilege of other sections, to furnish Reed’s Patent Water Boxes, which are believed to be ten times more durable than any other, by those who have made a fair trial of them, and are infalli bly secure against fire by firiction. His fine Gins, will gin Mastodon Cotton as well as any Saw Gin can. His agents will visit planters generally, and exhibit specimens of his late improvements, and point out their advantages, in time, for all to en gage, and be supplied before next ginning season, or. engagements can be made by letter, directed to him at Clinton, Jones county, Georgia. Gins, will be delivered at the purchaser’s residence in an' part of the State, except the Cherokee counties where they will be left at the Rail Road depot, most convenient to the purchaser.
