wounded officers at the favorable account here
given.
The headquarters of Gen. Scott arc licre in
Tacubaya, where Gen. Worths's division is
also quartered. Gen. Pillow is at Mixcoae,
two miles .south. General Twiggs at San Angel,
about four miles south, and Gen. Quitman at
San Agustine. Some sickness prevails in the
army, but the health of the troops may be put
down as generally good.
The wounded officers are all doing well. A
day or two since botli Lieut. Hamilton and
Ilcllaway were reported us in a dangerous con
dition, but I believe that all danger is now con
sidered as over.
A feeling of gloom overspread our city yes
terday when the story was current that Gen
erals Worth, Pillow and Smith were killed.
Three more gallant spirits have not figured
upon the glorious theatre where American
valor has shone so conspicuously. The rea
der will perceive however, that the death of
the latter is the only one spoken of with cer
tainty. May it prove that even in this the wri
ter (a Mexican) is mistaken, and that they all
•arrive to honor and be honored by their
country. The largest estimate in figures of
our loss is 1700 —and this too is a Mexican
estimate. It is very reasonable to suppose
that it is greatly exaggerated. As to Gen.
Scott’s loss being from one-fourth to one-third
of his army, we look upon this conjecture as
altogether destitute of probabilify.
Now that the city of Mexico is in our pos
session the question arises, what terms shall be
next offered to Mexico? Or shall this govern
ment now hold the entire country, declare it
conquered and establish a provisional govern
ment over it, with such laws and municipal le
gulations as may suit the exigency? This lat
ter seems not only in itself the best policy for
the present, but the only alternative left.
When our Congress meets, “the assembled
wisdom of the nation” may devise and direct
a permanent policy in the premises. Since
M. ixico has chosen not to make peace, except
on terms wholly inadmissible by this country,
the next alternative seems to be, war unto sub
jugation. This result may prove ultimately a
blessing to that distracted country. It will
be the means of annihilating the power of her
present military despots, and of introducing
among them more of the genius of true Re
publicanism and of our free institutions. They
may then for the first time, become a happy,
enlightened and prosperous people.
The following, from the Baltimore Sun of
the 2Dth ult., accounts for our failure to re
ceive telegraphic despatches from points fur
ther North.
The Telegraph between this city and Phi!a- :
delphia still remains out of order, the break,
we learn, being beyond Wilmington, Del.—
We are consequently without our usual com
mercial despatch from New York.
