I.ATKST HATES IKO.M LIViKFOOI SEPT. ID j I.ATEST DATES FROM HAVKH SEPT. 2 j Extracts of letters received in this city , dated ‘‘HA VRE, SEPT. 15.- Cottons. —During the whole of the past week, our market has been characterized by a much greater degree of flat ness, than we have noticed for a long lapse of time. The accounts from the other side of the channel, and the depressed condition of Cottons in Liver pool, where prices are lower than with us, have been productive of considerable dullness in the transactions, which in some instances have been completely paralyzed. The demand being re* stricted to the urgent wants for consumption, and dealers being unwilling to go beyond this, notwith* standing that holders seem disposed to accede to lower terms, in order to realize promptly, the sales have been daily on an extremely limited scale, and prices have receded f 1 a 2 on all American de scriptions. The general want of confidence now prevalent, in consequence of the apprehensions excited by the increasing derangements in Engi land, acts prejudicially on business, and it is doubt ful under such an unpropitious state of things, Whether a further concession on the part of sellers, would be the means of inducing any great activi ty in the buying. On the other hand however, it must be observe J that the situation here is at pre sent less critical than in England} but from the se- 1 riom nature oi the crisis there, which is dailv as suming a more alarming character, and looking to its baneful influence on the commercial communi ty in general, there is reason for apprehending that i the year will not close, without our being in a greater or less degree effected by it in its progress. We are without any recent advices from the Uni- i ted States, hut are hourly expecting the arivul of the Cambria , and our steamer, with despatches to i Ist inst. “The sales of the week were 2,997 bales, of which 721 bales were Upland at f. 98.50 a 100.50. The imports during the same period amount to 1,118 ! bales. Stock this day, 10,000 bales of which 40,- 200 were United States.” "LIVERPOOL, Sept, 18.—Further commercial failures, including houses with liabilities on a very large scale, ha\ e occurred since the departure of the last steamer, chiefly in London; which with the continuance of the extreme money pressure causes a degree of gloom and depression in busi ness generally, rarely witnessed here. The hea viest stoppage was only known to-day and its pro bable effect is very imperfectly seen as yet. "The cotton market lias been extremely dull and has sunk fully per lb.; partly owing to the : general stagnation of the trade, which has forced upon the spinners and manufactures a further cur tailment of the consumption; and partly to the ac» counts by the last steamer being more promising as regards the American growing crop. Fair Up land was yesterday quoted G$J, fair .Mobile GJ, and fair Orleans 7Jd, per lb., but the lower qualities have declined in a greater degree, without how* ! ever producing any increase of demand, while on the other hand holders evince much more anxiety : to realize. It has indeed been quite impossible to ! sell to any extent for the last week, and to-day prices have become nominal or nearly so, ’*Fhe sales lor the week ended 10th inst. amount- ; ed to 18,50 C bales, and for the week ended last eve- 1 uing they amounted to 11,880 bales. Os these, 3150 ; were Upland at Orleans at Alabama and Mobile at tigaTL and 250 Sea Island at 13a19J. per lb. About 3000 bales were taken j for export, but the spirit of speculation is quite dormant. The stock id this port is about -180,000 bales, against 090,008 at same period last season; the stuck of American is estimated at 332,000, being a decrease of 155,000 bales. “I he harvest may be considered as virtually j completed, and no difference of opinion seems to 1 exist as to general abundance, but us liitle of the | new crop is yet available, and there being an ex tensive consumption demand, we have to advise a great reaction in the corn markets and important | improvement in prices. Flour has advanced to 29s j a3os for western canal, the latter price being now ■ pretty freely obtained for the best parcels, while I Philad and Baltimore command 27s Gda2Bs 6d; sour 23sa21s6d. Indian corn 255a33s per qr, chietiy Belling at 30s tor lair average parcels in sound con- ! dition. Am. wheat Gs Gda7s Gd for red and Bsaßs od for white per 70 lbs. The previous great de pression here brought some orders for France, the execution of which contributed to the rise in the first instance.” NEW YORK, Oct. 4.2$ P.lT—Crtton, a few sales at £ cent lb. decline. The market is not really opened since the news. Flour 6 cts. better than yesterday, though the news can hardly be the cause.—Genesee is offered at 55,75; new Michigan brought $5.88. Exchanges thought better of,but no sales; freights very dull. Stocks lower of course. By Telegraph. [ Correspondence of the Baltimore Sun. ] NEW \ORK, Oct. 4,6 P. M.—The Hibernia’s news was received yesterday, by telegraph, and tills 1 morning the Government Express, with let ters and papers by her, reached this city. The market has been considerably unsettled through out the day, and operations have consequently been light. So far, it is said, that but few orders for breadstuff's, have been received. There is an upward tendency, with sales at an advance. The operations haye not exceeded 3,000 barrels, at $5 75 for old Genesee, and $5 87£ for new Genesee, Southern is held at $6 a$G 12£ tor all common descriptions. W heat has also improved, and the tendency is still upwards. Sales of 3,000 bushels have been 35 for prime white Genesee, and 51 12 a 51 25 for red. Corn has also partaken of the general improve ment, and sales of 10,000 bushels have been made cents, according to quality and descrip- Fhe decline in Cotton reported by the news, was quite unexpected, and has depressed and wholly j 9 1 unsettled the market. The tendency has been downward to-day; but no sales have been been made. The failures in England have revived the ru- ! mors of similar catastrophies here, and some few are suspected of being in a tottering condition. J. Cotton market in the early part of the week was quite ae- j live, and sales were freely made at 10| to 11c.— ! Since, in consequence of a decline of |c. in other j markets, we have been affected in some degree, and we quote 10 to 10Jc., principal sales, 10. J. COTTON STATEMENT. ! Stock old Cotton, Sept. 1 82 Received week ending 2d inst 304 il Previously 95 —399 j . 481 i Shipped this week, 104 " Previously, 27—131 I Stock on hand,.. 350 | MACON,Oct. s,— Cotton.— The business of the past week was rather spiritless. The receipts * were 890 bales, which were principally stored on planters’ account —parties generally evincing very ; | little desire to operate. There is very little change I in prices. We quote to-day 10e., and for strictly prime and for square bales, probably a fraction more could be obtained, say 10J. The following are the receipts ol Cotton in this city for the month of Sep tember, 1347. 890 balesu Stock on hand Ist October, 1847, 3,013 Received by Macon and Western R. R. 28 Flour—s% a 53 per 100 lbs. Corn —3o a.35c. per bushel. The demand being confined entirely to home consumption. Bacon —9 a per lb. Lard— lo all c. per lb. NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 2— Cotton. —Arrived ; since the 241 h instant, 13,146 bales, of which 74G j are old crop. Cleared in the same time 71G9 bales—making an addition to stock of 6277 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive of all on ship board ! not cleared on the Ist inst. a slack of 80,470 bales. At the time of making up our last weekly re- i i port the Cotton market had been brought to a [ j complete stand by the impossibility of negotiating Exchange, and the scarcity of vessels, though at 1 the same time there was little or no stock to ad- j mit ot any transactions of consequence. Early I in the week, however, fresh arrivals again gave | the market a moderate supply, and as holders , were desirous to sell they were induced to accept I rather easier prices, and also to afford buyers some j tew days time lor their payments, in consideration ' ot the sudden derangement of the Exchanges, which had put a stop to the usual negotiations.— Under these circumstances a fair amount of busi- 1 ness was done on Monday and Tuesday, about 35t)0 bales haying been disposed of on those two days. On Tuesday a brief telegraphic despatch, transmitted to the Baltimore papers, announced j the arrival of the Britannia at Boston, and on Wed- | nesday her accounts were received in full. The unfavorable tenor of these advices increased the | obstacles in the way of transactions in our ! market, and in the moderate sales which have ta ken place since their receipt—amounting to about 1 3500 bales—holders have been compelled to make a further concession in favor of buyers. Indeed at this moment the market is in a very unsettled | and embarrassed state, as the impossibility of ef fecting shipments to any considerable extent, or | of negotiating Exchange renders rates in a great measure nominal, while at the same time conti- j nued arrivals are causing an accumulation of stock I in factors’ hands. The total sales of the week | sum up 7000 bales, taken mostly lor England, j France and the North, and prices have given way | until they show a decline of j a | of a cent from ' last week’s quotations, and our figures have been reduced accordingly.
