and after the oth. of February, 1819, came up 1
as the special order of the day: and after a short j
speech from Mr. Shockley, in opposition to it,
the bill was put upon its third reading and
passed —years 77, nays 30.
The call of the counties having been gone
through, bills for a third reading came up re
gularly, when Mr. Jackson of Walton, moved
that the four bills which he hud the honor
to introduce, contemplating a change of the j
Constitution so far as to give the election of
Judges of the Supreme Court and the Supc- |
rior Court, of Solicitors, &c., to the people, be
referred to a select committee. Agreed to.
Nothing of importance done in the Senate
to-day. The time was almost entirely spent 1
in quarrelling over some resolutions in refer- j
cuce to the Wilmot Proviso.
I
Saturday, Nov. 27, 1317.
Hear Sir ; The Senate have had under con
sideration to-day the report from the Commit
tee on the state of the Republic. This report
is upon the subject of the Wilmot Proviso.
I am net authorized to say what position the
Committee have taken, as I have not seen their
report. I am informed, however, that to the
Democracy at least, it is objectionable, inas
much as it sets forth declarations which they
as a party, arc not, and cannot be satisfied to
endorse. The Preamble, I understand, de
clares that they, the Committee, will abstain
from any utterance at this time, on the Wil
mot Proviso, as connected with the acquisition,
of territory, for the reason that they may not
all agree. Mr. Dunagan endeavored to-day to j
amend the report by -striking out the above !
clause, and declaring the war to have been |
commenced by the act of the Republic of '
Mexico, and as such, that our Government is i
not responsible for its consequences, and ought ;
to prosecute the war with the utmost vigor ,
until Mexico shall agree to pay all the de- 1
mauds due the United States on account of
spoliations upon to our citizens, as well as in- I
d enmity for the expenses incurred by this |
Government in the prosecution of this war, ,
nnd if Mexico be unable to do so in money, i
the United States should insist upon her ced- j
ing territory sufficient to satisfy so just uud j
reasonable a demand.
The amendment of Mr. D. called forth con
siderable argument, in which Mr. Foreman,
Mr. Chastain, Mr. Glenn, Mr. Lawton, Mr.
Williamson and Mr. Terrell, participated. Mr.
Foreman is a sound sense kind of a man, has
Very proper ideas upon this subject, and docs
not*fear to give them utterance. His style is
rather boisterous than otherwise, and while he i
was speaking this evening, I heard a very j
good joke passed off at his expense. In one
of the rooms immediately under the Senate!
chamber, about three feet square of the over- i
head plastering tumbled down, and it was said |
that Foreman (who stood while speaking al
most directly over the spot from which the
plastering fell,) made so much fuss and stamp
ed go hard,’that he had jolted the plastering
from otf the wall.
Mr. Chastain delivered a plain, practical and ;
argumentative speech. He supported the |
amendment, and assumed the position that |
the war was brought on by the act of Mexico 1
that the President in ordering the march of 1
the army from Corpus Christi to the liio j
Grande, had only done what he was constitu
tionally required to do, and that if he had not
done so, the party which now abused him for
doing what he did, would still have abused
him. Mr. C. is a gentleman of fine sense, a
good legislator, and a mild and pleasant speaker. ‘
The other speakers I had not the pleasure
of hearing. They all failed to settle the dis
pute about the amendment, and the Senate ad
journed until 10 o'clock Monday morning,
without taking any action upon the subject.
Yours, &c., P.
Death of Mbs. Place. — We were shocked
yesterday morning by the announcement of
the death of Mrs. Place—the Josephine Clifton
of other days. She had been indisposed for a
week or more, but so little apprehension was
entertained for her safety that her death pro
duced a sensation like that of the recital of
some sudden and fatal casualty. She died
yesterday morning, about 8 o’clock, of a vio
lent hemorrhage, which snatched her away be
fore those about her person could com
prehend that danger menaced her. Thus has
perished, in the high noon of life, a lady
whose morning was a succession of profession
al triumphs. Her noble figure commanded
an admiration which her talents fixed. The
career of no theatrical person has been less
chequered bythe vacillation of public taste. —
She shone forth a star at the beginning, and
though she seldom performed of late, her loss
is felt as the dimming of one. Neither her per
sonal nor prefessional superiority had tasted
of decay. It requires an effort to reconcile the
mind with the solemn truth that the “magnifi
cent Josephine” as she was styled, is—dust.—

We regret to announce the death of Capt.
John Nock, well known to our readers as a
popular and gentlemanly commander of several
steamers on our river, and also in the Florida
line for many years. Ilia earthly ties have
been sundered in the prime of life. The dis
ease which caused his death was hemorrhage
of the lungs. The shipping in port will this
day display their colors at half mast as a mark
cf respect for his memory. —Savannah Georgian,

of all on ship-board not cleared on the 23d inst. a
stock of 130,794 bales.
We left the market on Friday last with a good
enquiry, and still an upward tendency in prices,
which had recovered fully § a | of a cent from the
lowest point of depression, immediately after re
ceipt of the telegraphic summary of the steamer
Washington’s advices. Since then the demand has
continued very active, and factors have been able
to dispose of their lists readily, as fast as placed
upon the market, while at th“ same time prices,
though exhibiting a good deal of irregularity, have,
particularly since Saturday, presented a constant
upward tendency; and the closing rates of yester
day, to which our quotations have been made to con
form, show a further advance since our last report
of $ a | of a cent per lb, or a recovery to within a
fraction of the position which the market held on
the receipt of the Caledonia’s advices, some ten
davsjsince. The total sales of the past three days
have been 14,5C0 bales —viz—4 800 on Saturday,
including a list of about 1500 bales, closed late in
the evening on Friday, and not before reported;
50C0 on Monday and 6000 yesterday, and the pur
chases have been principally for England, the Con
tinent and the North, the demand running almost
exclusively upon the qualities ranging from Ordi
nary to Middling Fair. The absence of transac
tions in the higher grads leaves us without a basis
for quotations applicable to them, and we are still
under the necessity of representing them as nomi
ral, though they are held at materially advanced
rates.

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLI.
A REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
. geologists to be t- gveut rarity in nature and
! j kuown to them by the name of Tripoli, has lately
been discovered in this country, although but in one
: bed, of \ ery narrow limits, ail mv ned by the “Mount
, Eagle Manufacturing Company," incorporated for
j the sole purpose of its manufacture.
The article is excellent for burnishing and clean
ing all finished metallic and glass surfaces, such as
r gold, silver, brass, Britannia and steel ware, \vin
, dow glass, &c. Nothing lias ever yet been discov

DR CHRISTIE’S
MEDICAL GALVANISM.
AMONG the first thoughts suggested by the re
markable discoveries in Galvanism were
those regarding its relations to Medical Science.—
CAN IT AID IN THE ALLEVIATION OF
DISEASE! In replying to this question we an
swer it unhesitatingly in the affirmative. Galvan
ism has been found of the utmost advantage in
many diseases, and the beneficial results with
which its application has been followed in nume
rous and most afflicting cases, are described as ap
parently miraculous. When every means has been
tried with ut success, and the last lingering ray of
Hope has departed, the wretched sufferer has
been restored through its influence to comparative
health, comfort and happiness. The fact is pecu
liarly applicable to those terrible and prevalent
disorders called Nervous Complaints, in which me
dicine is of so feeble avail—being often entirely
useless —as in cases of confirmed Dyspepsia, Para
lysis, Tic Doloreaux, Bronchitis, Chronic Rheuma
tism. Ferrous Headache, and many' others. In all
these disorders DR. CHRISTIE'S GALVANIC
RINGS, BELTS, NECKLACES, BRACELETS,
6cc. are of immediate and certain benefit.
(CTCadtion. —The great celebrity' and success
of Dr. Christie’s Galvanic and Magnetic Curatives,
has caused them to be counterfeited by unprinci
pled persons. To protect fae public against de
ception there is but ONE AUT II oTtl ZED
AGENT appointed in each town or city-, from
