aad sometimes hammer away and labor very [ hard to convince the jury of the truth of some thing which nobody thought of denying.— They always conclude their speeches, by ty ing up everything into a knot which nobody in the world can untie. Such is the charac ter of the bull-dogs—they are the best law yers, and after a short practice, are enabled to Retire into private life. The last species, the foxes, are those easy, af fable men, that could pull your nose without insulting you—they are keen, wily gentle men. who always “look before they leap,” and turn over a case until they see through the whole clearly. They affect an easy, indolent manner, speak very calmy, and coolly, and are never thrown off their guard, or permit them- | selves to get in a passion. Like hot lead they ; can insinuate themselves into every crack and I crevice of your good opinion—they can cheat j you before your face, and do it in such a gen tlemanly manner, that you are unable to re sist. They know every turn in the game, and can not only bring out their trumps at the proper time, but if you don’t watch them closely will turn a jack from the bottom. Description can never give us a correct idea of the lawyer —his motives and actions, are so . different at times, his character abounds in so many inconsistencies, that every one must ac knowledge a good lawyer to be a perfect para dox. * T. Cleared in the same time 10,194 bales—making an addition to stock of 3839 bales, anti leavir g on hand, inclusive of all on shipboard not cleared on the 30th ult., a s‘ock of 134,637 bales. It being currently reported, and generally cre dited, that the Acadia's accounts were in by ex press, and that they were of an unfavorable char acter for Cotton, our market on Friday was in con sequence brought to a complete stand, and quota tions were entirely nominal, though there tvas an evident tendency to a decline, as the few buyers disposed to operate at all claimed a very material reduction. On Saturday morning the news was made public, so far a? received, but it proved to be a very meager, telegraphic sketch, from which nothing very definite could be gathered in regard to the actual condition of the Liverpool Cotton 1 market, though mention was made of a further material decline, and further extensive failuies, , under the severe pressure for money. In this un i settled and uncertain stale of affairs some few sales j were made in onr own market (in all about 1000 I i bales.) at prices which indicated a decline of § a sos a cent from the nominal figure# ot Friday, : j low middling to strictly middling having been sold ! at G aG$ cents per pound. On Saturday some fur ther particulars were received, but they were merely telegraphic, and still indefinite, and the to tal failure ot the mail on Monday, w hen the ac- \ counts in full were confidently expected, restrict ed business to some 300 bales, though there was some inquiry, at low efforts. Yesterday the mail arrived with the commercial circulars and corres pondence. Soon after the delivery of the mail quite an active demand sprung up in our market, and the sales of the day amounted to fully GotJO bales, at prices which showed a recovery of the j greater portion of the previous decline, round lists ; of Middling having brought cents. At the close | there was but little offering, and factors were | claiming a still further advance. The total sales of toe three days have been 7800 bales; taken for } England, the Continent and the North, and though ' the market is very unsettled we have arranged our quotations to conform as nearly as possible to the prevailing rates of yesterday. The demand has been chiefly for the At lantic markets, and ia the Common to Fair quali ties, ranging from 3$ a3s cents per lb. but the ex treme range of prices is about the same as before I quoted, the market acquiring more firmness at the ' close —say for Inferior JA a 3, Common 3$ a 3£, ! Fair 3$ a 4, Prime 4$ a l|, ami Choice 6 cents per j lb. There are also still occasional limited sales of j Superior, made by the “new process,” at 6$ a6£ j cents per lb. We hear of occasional lots being 1 sold on plantations at about 4 cents per lb. but are unablo to learn of any transactions of much im portance. and understand that some planters are making shipments to the Western markets. Motasscs. —We left the Molasses market on Fri day last with a good demand, and but a moderate stock in first bands, the closing rates being 19 a 19$ cents per gallon. These rates continued to be steadily maintained on Saturday and Monday, du ring w hich two days about 1800 bids w r ere disposed of, the principal portion at 19 cts per gallon. Yes terday buyers, particularly for the North, entered the market more freely, and though some lew sales were made early in the morning at 19 cents yet the price soon advanced to 19$ for round lots, with small parcels at 19£ cents per gallon. The transactions amounted to 1100 barrels; making a total for the three days of 2000 barrels, the bulk of which was taken for the North, and the re mainder principally for the V’. est. We are ad- i vised of sales ol 50,000 gallons on plantation, above j the city at 14 cents per gallon. To the Public :—When a soldier in the American camp, in 1778, I. with many others (owing to great exposure) had a violent attack of disease of the lungs, by which I was disabled from duty for a long time. Since that period until recently, 1 have never been free from cough and a difficulty of breathing. Year after year I have expectorated over a gill a day ; often much more, and sometimes mixed with blood. For months together, night af ter night, I have had to sit or be bolstered up to obtain my breath. The weakness and debility, caused by snch constant expectoration, frequently brought me to a state bordering on death. I have bad skilful physicans to attend me> and every thing done that was thought likely to give me relief, without any beneficial effect. Last winter I had another very severe attack of inflammation of the Lungs which I fully expected would he the last, 1 then considered my case as past the aid of ruedi «inc, when I was advised to use Jayne’s Expecto rant. I did so with a hope that, as it had cured many of my acquaintances of various diseases of the lungs, it migh at least mitigate my sufferings.— Need 1 say how gratified I feel ? It has EFFEC TUALLY cured me. As soon as I commenced ta king it, 1 found it reached my case, and I began to breath with more freedom. My expectoration became easy, and my entirely left me. 1 now feel as well as «*ver I did in my life, and am better than I have been for the last sixty years. Now after suffering so long, and finding at last such singular relief from Dr. Jayne’s Expectorant, I feel anixous to inform mr fellow citizen* where relief may be had. East Livermore, August 12, 1845. Dear Sir:—Yon may publish this letter, or make such use of it as you think best. A year ago last fall I was taken sick with a severe cough—was very muchpressed for breath—lost my appetite and became very much reduced in general health —sweat profusely, and could not sleep nights. 1 applied to a physician, who done all in his power to relieve and restore me, but did not succeed. I was confined to the house most of the winter—often had long spells of severe coughing, raised some blood. Some time in the spring I commenced tak iug Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry. Before I had finished one bottle I was relieved; my cough re moved; my sleep restored; i bled no more. 1 have taken four bottles the past season; My strength and general health is now good.
