ADDRESS
CE THE
Carrier of the Consiitulioaaiist.
JANUARY I, 184 L
My Gentle I’at runs :
Still another year
lias rolled our sorrows and our glories past;
Now seemed the time like summer sun-light clear.
Anon with cold unpitying cloud- o’ercast.
Pass in review the memories wliich stand
J.ike dial figures on the time gone by,
And there behold the glories of our land.
Dashed with its sorrows—the Almighty's hand
lias mingled them for his own purpose high.
There’s not a sea but bears a flag of ours,
Whose teeming commerce swarms on ev’ry shore;
Among the greatest states, the mightiest powers,
That dag is known the boundless ocean o'er.
The policy was wise llnit p-u. w each port
Open to all the nations of mankind ;
For, powers that once repelled, now smoothly court
The ship that’s wafted from some distant port,
Though with a native or a stranger wind.
' "
ft i* our glory that we stand alone.
Far from the shores whore liberty must sleep;
Here, like a beacon light, cur stars have shone.
To light her worshippers across the deep.
Ilerc sl all they shine through ages yet untold,
A light to the oppressed of all the wori f,
Till, like a mighty torrent, strong and bold,
1 be mass shall sweep with power all m-eojitrolled.
And fierce oppression from the eartl be mrled.
Vet there is one bright star in that dark sty
Os European tyranny and wrong;
A sacred champion lifts his voice on high,
• u firm defiance of the feudal throng.
Ft ”* A Mria's threat, the holy chief disdains,
A" In* diverer of his land will he,
'I- hat and sfia cho Freedom's magic strains:
o£ **
■arouse thee, oh! alia! rend thy chains,
8 e worthy of thine ancient fame:—be free 1
Behold <»ur country ! Prominent she stands
Amidst the sovereign pr.tions of the world;
Plenty and peace smile on our own broad lands.
Our banners on a foreign soil unfurled.
Out garnered stores profusely scattered forth,
I’ofeed the starving millions of the East,
- tochmn io Southern Europe, and the North,
J he ruby price that Liberty is worth, —
And statesmen muse while they behold the feast!
Yet, while with charity’s dispensing band.
Our treasure to the mendicant we throw.
No hostile footstep shall pollute our land.
To claim that treasure as a conquering foe.
T was thus the Mexican our boundary crossed,
To sweep away our array from the soil;
They met, and fearfully—the day was lost !
And. like a huge bark on the breakers tossed,
They crumbled, shattered with the dread recoil. !
Then rang from North to South, the battle-cry j
The bugle’s blast from East to \\ est rang out;
A thousand banners were unfurled oa high.
A hundred thousand bosoms swelled the shout.
Freedom’s bright hosts, a wild, impetuous flood,
Rushed to the con diet with those mongrel hordes,
And when, upon that treacherous soil they stood,
I.oud rang the soldier watchword—Blood for blood 1
And flashed, rclentles* ; from their glittering swords.
Onward they pressed, eager, and undismayed,
Gray veterans seeking foes they once hare met.
While many a vo%v was breathed on virgin blade,
That never had, with foemao’s blood, been wet.
Soon the bright steel its vengeful office found,
And fearful is the story of that day;
.For many a darkdaced soldier bit the ground,
While loud our bugles swelled the glorious sound
Os victory cu the wails of Monterey.
j And Westward ho I another column poured,
O’er California’s prairies to display
j The star-lit banner; while our navy moored
Their harks in anvienttSan Francisco’s bay.
> I Thus fell their boasted strongholds one by one,
j Before the mighty vengeance of the Irec ;
! And WestwarJly, the noble task was done,
When Sacramento’s bloody field was won.
And proudly waved our flag o'er Santa Fe.
i
i And now the bird of Peace lu-r pinions spread,
And crossed the Gulf, her mission to fulfil;
To join the requiem for the gallant dead,
And claim the living for our brothers still.
J But heard you not the message buck she bore,
The proud defiance ringing to the sky ?
While thirty thousand crossed the desert o er,
To lave their native hill-sides with their gore,
. Or, back from Buena Vista’s field to fly ?
'Then rang again the bugle through our land.
1 3 ~
Ten thousand heai is sprang Mi ward at the call,
■ And Vera Cruz beheld the faithful hand.
Salute our banner on the Castle wall.
At Cerro Gordo’s steep and guarded height,
Loud Loomed the cannon of t!u* Northmen bold,
The deadly lire, the frantic leader's flight,
' And Io! is to!d another glorious fight,
Another matchless victory is told.
On. on. o'er Churubusco's bristling height.
And o’er Contreras, conquering they pressed ;
Chapultcpec, the last, the bloodiest light,
Sent many a gallant spirit 9f its rest.
Thus,ever, back a proud defiance hurled,
The stubborn Spaniard to his Northern foe.
O’er fields of blood our banners were unfurled,
An 1 then, was echoed through the startled world,
Oh I what a victory was Mexico !
Once more, she gentle dove her olive bears,
And vvoos the conquered land again to peace;
With them, together, we’ll bedew, in tears,
The graves where lie the noblest of their race.
These are the sorrows, the Almighty’s hand,
lias mingled with our glories of the year :
There’s notan eve in all this wide-spread land,
That will not droop for that departed baud,
And give ihrir graves the tribute of a tear.
An empire conquered ! a whole race o’erthrown !
Eternal honor to that gallant band.
Who, thus, their country’s banner have upborne,
And spread such floods of glory o’er the land !
j Vet, not forgot, that stern till helmsman true.
Called to the deck, the embayed bark to save ;
Manned bv a sturdy Democratic crew.
The noble vessel beats the breakers through,
Whilst treason’s tempests vainly round her rave.
j Hail to thee 1 patriot ruler of the Free 1
Thy task, unsought, unbought, will soon be o’er ;
Each pledge redeemed, thy memory shall be
Bright on thv country s pages evermore.
A rescued people shall thy worth proclaim,
And millions yet unborn shall sound thy praise ;
Commerce unbound, o’er earth shall spread thy
name,
And Agriculture, Plenty, Freedom, Fame,
Their proudest monuments shall, {rateful, raise.
.My gentle patrons, may eternal pence
.Smile, on our land, to glad each coming year.
While all your wealth, and all your joys increase,
And all your dearest hopes become more dear.
Farewell 1 Time’s restless v. Lug brooks no delay,
Cut " Onward, onward ever i” is his call;
To bear the abstract history of the day,
Vour Carrier, true to I imc, must.wend Lis way—
Farewell! A happy New Year to tou all 1

ou.nurL iir.ANHAMS LIVER AND
DYSPEPTIC MEDICINE.
IN offering this valuable me Heine to the people
oi (Georgia, for tlie relict and cure of many dis
eases incident to a Southern climate. I do not claim
so it infallibility; neither do 1 say it will cure ajl
Hi ea.-es. But in Chronic Liver Affections and
JJ spepsia, I can confidently advise and recom
m nd it' use, from my personal observation and use
Jl he article in my own practice. This article is
la.orabiy received wherever it has been used. I
am allowed to refer to Mr. George Heard of Troup.
Mr. John Warren of Columbus, Mr. McKnffee of
Cobh. Mr. Asbury H ill of Athens, Mr. William D.
Terreil of Putnam, Rev. John 13. Dawson of La
rrange; to w hich a great number of names might
be added, who bear their testimony to its value;—
Hr. Henry' Branham has used this rnedit in j in his
own case, and has prescribed it to manv others,
fives it as his opinion, that it is one of the safest
and most valuable medicines that can be used in
Imperfect digestion, liver complaints, constipation
ind irregular =tate of the bowels. It is useful in
billions complaint-, so persons recovering from bil
ious fevers.and in sick or nervous head-ache. To
iregnant women, who are subject so costiveness,
■ his medicine is well suited. In regulating the stale
it the stomach and bowels, and promoting digestion,
it i“ particularly' useful.
I could append a long list of certificates, but for
boar, prefering to roly on the virtues of the medi
cine to sustain itself. The medicine is a gentle and
certain cathartic, tonic and sudorific.

gins.
rgillF. subscriber will continue, the manufacture
JL of GINS on his usual extensive scale; and
•mbraces this opportunity to thank his numerous
•ustomers for their liberH jpatronage heretofore.' —
The estimation in which his Gins are held muv be
cnown from the fact of his having sold more than
two thousand within the last three vears; probably
'en to one over anv other factory in the State.—
This evidence of the superiority of his Gins, is ac
•minted for, by his being the first to introduce the
iate improvements, and keeping the lead, by year
ly adding new ones. His first and second improve
ments, made the quality of rottdn perfect, though
mme were rather slow, las third made them suffi
•iently fast, it then only remained to make them
nore durable and convenient, which has been done
effectually, by several new improvements the pre
sent year; besides, be has ’he exclusive right of the
Mate. ami the privilege of other sections, to furnish
Reed's Patent Water Boxes, which are believed to
»e ten times more durable than any ether, bv those
who have made a fair trial of them, and arc infalli
bly secure against fire by function. His fine Gins,
.rill gin Mastodon Cotton as well as any Saw' Gin
can. ilis agents will visit planters generally, and
exhibit specimens of Ids late improvements, and
point out thotr ad\ antages. in time, for all to en

or, enga . men; can be made bv letter, directed to
him at (Hinton, Jones county, Georgia. Gins, will
be delivered at trie purchaser's residence in an"

where they will be left at the Rail Road depot,
most convenient to the purchaser. All w arranted
to perform well if used according to the printed
