,SuMhTiiiNO Nlw.— Ihe Fans correspondent f
of the New York ('currier rUs Etats Unis , M.
Gaillardot, has in his lust letter, the following !
ya<- age, which lets us into a secret, new, at |
least to u>, and we believe a large majority of
American citizens, in the diplomatic history of
the country, to wit, that a treaty guaranteeing i
the independence of the Island of Cuba, exists
between the United States, France and Eng
land, in case of its separation from Spain :
“The proclamation of'Gen. Taylor, in rela
tion to certain expeditions projected against !
the Island of Cnha and Mexico, has produced
here very earnest sensations. The courageous .
probity of old ‘ Rough and Ready’ has been
•y much applauded ; and the Constitutional I
has thought proper to call the attention of |
those a Tahiti us personages who covet Cuba, |
to the fact that, according to a treaty between
the I nit< I States, France and England, that
island, Uke Ilayti, must remain independent
ir, case it ever he severed trora Spain. The
island of Cuba, then, cannot belong to the
American Union, except by violation of a mu
tual agreement between the three great mari
time powers. Treaties certainly may be an
nulled, but this circumstance is not, on that 1
account, a matter which the annexationists
ehoul 1 neglect.”
Horn's Last.— On a rainy day this wag was
heard to exclaim
“Well my unmbrella is a regular Catholic.” j
h “How so:” inquired a friend.
“Because it always keeps lent.”
