SPECIAL NOTICES.
THE NEW "STORK DAY BOOK
SET Mr, Stimson, one of the editors of the
New York Day Book, is now in town, staying at
; the United States Hotel. The day Book is highly
spoken of by the Southern papers, as one which
has taken strong grounds in favor of the constitu
tional rights of the South, and has been the means
of arousing a strong union and anti-abolition feel
ing in the North. It is recommended by a large
number o' the leading merchants of New York, by
many of the leading statesmen at Washington, by
the Charleston Courier and Charleston News, Co
lumbians. C.) Telegraph, Savannah Georgian,
and other Southern papers.
The Daily Day Book is the size of the N. York
Herald, and as a commercial and business paper,
is not surpassed by any in the country. It is also
an amusing and useful family newspaper, indepen
dent and truthful, and governed by no parties,
cliques or factions. The Weekly is a double sheet'
containing forty columns of solid leading matter,
and is equal in every respect to the best papers in
the world.
The price of the Daily is $5.00 per annum, and
the Weekly is #2.00 per annum. 1 j an 8

Augusta Market> January 8-
REMARKS —ln presenting this morning our
usual Monthly Letter Sheet, we would call atten
tion of Merchants and Planters to our Tables. Our
Export Table :hows a deficiency to British ports
of 349 bales} au increase to Prance of 32,123} an
increase to other Foreign Ports of 12,322} and a
decrease to Coastwise Ports 0f40.743 bales, being
an increase in Shipments to all ports of 4,059
bales.
The Recepts, at ail the ports, it will be seen are
896,150 bales,against 921,620 bales last year, show
ing a decrease in receipts up to the latest dates
received of 25,470 bales.
The Stock on hand at all the ports sums up
497,468 bales, against 508,591 bales last year, show
ing a decrease of 11,123 bales.
The Receipts at Augusta and Hamburg from the
Ist Sept to Ist inst. were 120,697, against 141,433
bales last year. The hipments to Savannah and
Charleston, 84,872 against 100,574 bales last year.
The stock remaining on hand on the Ist inst. was
heavier than that held at the same period last year,
being 55,295 against 54,678 bales last year.
COTTON —Since our last report we have had
a quiet market. Both buyers and sellers seemed
disposed to withdraw from the market, until the
Niagara’s news came to hand, ai.d the only trans
actions which took place between Wednesday
last and Monday, were such lots as were put on
the market with orders to sell, and were, gener
ally, sold at easier prices. On Monday afternoon
the Niagara’* advices came to hand, and being
favorable, showing a further advance of f a
in the Liverpool market, the general supposition
was that they would have a favorable effect on
our market. After their receipt on Monday, we
heard of no transactions, and yesterday, Tues
day, their effect on the market, was to make pri
ces so unsettled that we cannot, with safety, give
quotations. All we can say is, there is a differ
ence existing between buyer and seller of about
i to i cent on the different grades. Yesterday,
the sales reached about 600 bales, and 13£ to
was all buyers were willing to pay for fair. Most
holders, however, refuse to sell the same quality
under 13| a 13£ cents. In this state our market
closed last evening. The sales of the week reach
about 3,300 bales, at prices rangiog from 12 to 13§
cents—principally at 13 to 13j.

GROCERIES —Our market is well supplied
with every article in the Grocery line. For the
season of the year our merchants have done a good
business, and so far as we can learn, orders are
daily increasing from Merchants of the interior who
have been in the habit of trading with Charles
ton and New York. We are not interested
with this line of business in the remotest man
ner, but from what we learn from our merchants,
weekly and monthly, and from our knowledge of
their business and the transactions in the same
artic'es in New York and Charleston, we have no
hesitation in saying, that so far as regards the Augus
ta market, Merchants from the interior i/tfiey wify
only examine the stocks on sale and the prices ask
ed and make a comparison, with the necessary ex.
penses and delays added, will give our market the
preference, and save money by so doing.
CORN. Our market at the present time is bet
ter supplied than it has been for some weeks past,
both with Georgia and Maryland Corn. As a
consequence prices are lower, and Maryland and
Georgia can now be purchased at 87£ cents per
bushel. By retail it is selling at 90 t 095, accord
ing to quality and quantity.
COFFEE. —The stock on sale is fully equal to
the demand, and for new crop Rio, holders are
bow asking a 12£ —the majority the latter
price by small lots.
MOLASSES.—New crop Cnba at the preseat
time is scarce and in demand at 27 a 28 cents. —
ere a lot of 50 or 100 hhds. put on the market,
perhaps it would not bring over 26, but at the pre
sent writing no such lot is offered, and 27 cents is
the lowest price holders are willing to take by the
5 or 10 hhds. New Orleans Molasses is scarce, and
in demand at 36 to 37 cents per gal.
FLOUR.—Our market is well supplied with
Northern Flour, which is selling from $6 to #8
per bbl.—fancy brands B£. Augusta Canal Flour,
which is equal to any brought to this market, is
selling at $6 to 7 per bbl. by the quantity, and
sby retail. We would call attention to the
hlour ground in this city—those who have used it
pronounce the best brands equal to Hiram Smith’s
which sells in this market at 8£ to $9 per bbl. In
these times, $1 to $1,50 saved on a barrel of Flour
s a consideration, and those disposed to encourage
Southern manufactures should give our Mills a pre
ference, particularly when they offer as good
an article as can be procured North, for a less
price.
FEATHERS.-There is a good demand for
this article, and holders have been able to get S 3
cents per lb. by the small quautity or large,
feome holders are asking 35 cents by the small
quantity.
—The stock on hand is fully eaual to
the demand. Sales from stores are making by
small lots at $1,20. From stores most holders are
asking $1,25 per sack.
BACON.—The stock on hand is light, and for I
Western, holders are asking for Sides a B^c. —
principally the latter price. But very little new
Bacon has come to hand, and new Hams are re
tailing from stores at 12£ cents.
DOMESTIC SPIRITS—Whisky is still scarce
and holders are asking 37£ cents per gallon.—
We quote Northern Gin at 38 a 40 ; N. E. Rum
36 a 37£; and Monogahela Whisky at 50 a 62 cents
per gallon.
STOCK ‘.—None offered for sale.
SUNDKIES.—Market well supplied with North
ern Cheese, which is selling at 9 a 9£ —Dairy, 11
a 11J cents ; Irish Potatoes, 3£ to $4; Onion 3, s3£
per bbl.
EXCHANGE.—We have no change to notice
in rates, which continue at par for Sight Checks
on New Yoik and other Northern cities.
FREIGHTS.—The River is now full, and in
good navigable order. We have no change to no
tice in rates to Savannah or Charleston, which re
main at 50 cents per bale for Cotton.
SAVANNAH, Jan. 6.— Cotton. —The market
was very quiet on Saturday, ihe sales amounting
to only 40U ba es, at prices ranging from 12J to 14
cents, the buik at 13 a 13§. We notice no change
in prices.

CONSUMPTION,
THOUGH often hereditary, it ses more
frequently from causes which few medical
writers have yet noticed. The higher classes are
more subject to it than the lower, who have to ta
bor for their support by exercising their arms, by
which means the viscera of the chest and all the
organs of the stomach are developed. These are
the regions where all the vital organs are seated.
The upper classes, on the other hand, generally
exercise ‘heir lower limbs, which can never be
done but at the sacrifice and expense of the upper
extremeties and chest. Alas! consumption and
premature deaths are but 100 olten the results of
their error.
WISTAR'S BALSAM OF WILD CHERRY,
is the great remedy for Consumption, and the best
medicine known to man for Asthma of eve ry stage,
Liver Complaints, Bronchitis, Influenza, Coughs,
Colds, Bleeuing of the Lungs, Shortness of Breath,
pains and weakness in the Side, Breast, &c, and
all other diseases of the pulmonary organs.
From the Cincinnati Daily Times.
We would advise cur readers who are laboring
under ar\ affection of the lungs, to make immediate
trial of this truly excellent medicine. The most
intelligent and respectable families of our city
have adopted it as a favorite family medicine; and
persons predisposed to Consumption, who have
used it, speak in the highest terms oi efficacy.
