The Smiths Dethroned. —From a para
graph in the Household Vords, we learn that
the books of the Register Office in England
disclose the fallacy of that time-honored be
lief which has so long given to the family of
Smiths the honor of numerical superiority
over all ofher families. The Smiths must
hide heads. The Jones’s
will hererrter occupy the throne. The regis
try of births, marriages and deaths in Eng
land and Wales, for the year ending June
30th, 1848, shows the names of 13,420 Jones’s,
and only 12,637 Smiths. The next name of
most frequent occurrence is Williams, 8,743 ;
then comes Taylor, 6,440; Davies, 5,589;
Brown, 5,585; Thomas, 5,278, &c. &c. It
may be that the Smiths have imitated the
house of Braganza, and transferred their
sceptre to the new world.
