BY JAMES GARDNER, Jr.]
The Infant’s Appeal.
A BRIEF BUT THRILLING SKETCH.
In the year 1836, the inhabitants living in a
district bordering on Rock River, in the North
ern part of the State of Illinois, were much
incensed by the depredations of a band of
horse thieves who infested that portion of
eountrv. Every exertion had been made to
discover the men engaged in this nefarious
business, but hitherto, in vain, and valuable
animals were stolen, and lost to their owners,
in defiance of the utmost vigilance and care.
During such a state of affairs, the citizens
residing in the region of the thieves, became
thoroughly excited, and were wound up to
such a pitch of indignation, that a body of
men were formed styled Rangers, whose ex
plicit duty was to expunge the districts of all
suspicious characters, and endeavor to put a
Stop to the depredations of the horse thieves.
fchortly after this band commenced opera
tions, word was conveyed to the leaders of
the Rangers that a valuable horse, which had
been stolen the night previous, could then be
found on the premises of a man named Burt,
locked up in the stable. Although Burt here
tofore had been looked upon as an honest
man and an upright citizen, yet the Captain
deemed it his duty to at least examine his
farm and learn the truth or falsity of the re
port.
Accordingly he summoned some half dozen
of his Rangers to meet him at a spot not far
from Burt’s house, and before morning, set
out for the same place himself. Daylight was
hardly discernible in the East, and the hazy
light of coming dawn had not yet penetrated
the bottom, where the suspicious man resided,
as the Rangers, charged wiih the fearful mis
sion of life or death, silently approached, and
surrounded the dwelling. Leaving three of
the band to guard the entrance, the Captain
proceeded with the others to the stable, broke
open the door, and found the missing horse,
as had been stated, safely stalled inside.
Not a lingering doubt now remained of
Burt’s guilt, and with a stern determination
to make such an example of him as would
deter others from a like transaction, the Ran
gers returned to the house. In the mean
time, Burt had arisen, and upon coming to
the door, was seized by those in waiting, and
upon demanding the reason, was informed
that a stolen animal was found in his stable,
*nd that he was considered a thief. Mutter
ing something about “he knew it would come
to this at last,” he quietly submitted to what
ever his captors had in store for him.
A short consultation was held, and it was
resolved to hang the criminal upon a large
elm tree that grew in front of his own house,
it being deemed that such an act would strike
terror and dismay into the ranks of horse
thieves.
Burt had asked half an hour to prepare for
his death, and the sun had arisen in all his
golden majesty, ere the fatal moment had ar
rived which would launch him into eternity.
In vain had his grey headed father and mother
pleaded for his life, with trembling tongues —
the old lady tottering forth from the dwelling,
and kneeling in suppliant mood to his appa
rently merciless captors. In vain had the
wile of his bosom knelt in tears of agony, and
entreated them as husbands to spare his life—
for each Ranger had suffered more or less in
person, and they deemed the example abso
lutely necessary to deter others, and it seemed
as though Burt must die.
|gThe dreadful preparations were completed
—the half hour had expired—and the crimi
nal was arranged under a limb of a stout elm.
over which a rope was thrown, one end being
jiosed around the prisoner’s neck, and the
other held by three of the Rangers.
Then came a moment of dreadful silence ;
that awful stillness, which preludes the
launching of a fellow being into eternity—
while the three strong men who held the
rope’s end, gazed fixedly upon t! : ; ’attain
for the signal. It was given by raising tue
right arm; and already the noose was tighten
ing around the doomed man’s neck, when the
wife of Burt issued forth from the house
holding an infant, a little more than a year
old, in her arms.
Rushing forward, she fell on her knees di
rectly in front of the Captain, and raising the
child with arms outstretched, towards him,
she exclaimed in tones that would have
pierced a heart of steel:
“If you will not spare him for the sake of
his grey haired sires, or the wife of his bosom,
spare him, in the name of God, tor the sake
of his infant boy !”
Another dead silence reigned like a pall
over the spot; then, as though inspired by
heaven itself, the child also stretched out iis
little arms towards its father, and exclaimed,
in a voice heard by all, the single word :
“Father!”
“ lne muscles of the Captain’s face quiver
ed in every fibre, and the men who held the
rope slowly relaxed the pressure around the
neck of Burt! when the intant again uttered,
in distinct tones:
“Father! father!”
■fUAnd then, as though despairing of success,
huddled into its mother’s bosom, and burst
into a sobbing cry.
It was more than the Rangers could stand,
and alter a short consultation, the rope was
taken from the criminal’s throat, and the band
left the spot; and Burt became a relormed
man thiough the powerful effects of his “ In

A correspondent of the Boston Journal in a
recent letter, gives the following account of
. thia‘C:ty of Spindles” as it was in 1821 and as
it now is in 1851:
“If the visitor wishes to go into the facto
ries, it is necessary to obtain tickets of admis
sion from the agents. * r . W. Paige & Co. and
A. Sc A. Lawrence & Co., before .leaving Bos
ton. On arrival, he will be admitted to wit
ness the vast operations in the Hamilton, Ap
pleton, Lawrence, Tremont, Boott, Suffolk,
and other mills, which together have a capital
of $13,000,000 invested,and give employment
to 9,000 females and 4,000 males. The annual
consumption of cotton is 35,000.000 pounds,
and wool 5,500,000 pounds; from which is
manufactured 80,000,000 yards cotton cloth,
20,000,000 yards calico, 15,000,000 yards
bleached and dyed goods, 1,000 000 yards
broadcloth and casimere, and 500.000 yards
carpeting. The annual produce of cotton
cloth alone, allowing it to be a yard wide
would extend over 50,000 miles of surface, or
twice round tbe globe! Such is the vast ex
tent of the manufacturing operations in Low
ell, where, previous to the year 1821, the
Merrimack flowed noiselessly throguh an al
most unbroken forest, disturbed only by its
, own natural ripple, as it rolled along on its
-way to be lost in the Atlantic.”

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA. THURSDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 20, 1851. j
PROF. A. C. BARRY’S TRICOPHE
ROUS,
OR MEDICATED COMPOUND.
INFALLIBLE lor renewing, i..vigo: ating and
beautifying ’he HAIR, removing the scurf,
dandruff, and all affections of the scalp, and curing
eruptions on the skin, disea-es of the glands, mus
cles and integuments, and relieving stings, cuts
bruises, sprains. Stc. With this preparation -‘there
is no such word as fail.” The first journals in
America, medical men of tbe big Lest eminence
prominent citizens of all protessious, and ladies’
who have used it for years in their dressing n oms
and nurseries, admit with one accord, that for im
parting vigor, gloss, luxuriance and curl to the
hair, eradicat ng scurf and dandruff, healing
wounds, curing contusions, sprains, stings, &c.,
and relieving diseases of the skin, the glands and’
tbe muscles,L has no equal among the multitude
of compounds advertised in the public prints, or
used in private practice. In cheapness as wed as
efficacy, Barry’s Tricopherous is unrivalleu. The
immense cash sales of the article have enabled
the inventor to supply it at retail, at 25 cents per
bottle, which is from 50 to 100 per cent less than
the pr.ee of any other preparation for the hair now
in *ise. The scien.ific treatise on the hair and the
skin, (embracing valuable diiections lor the cul
ture and preservation of Nature’s choicest orna
ment,) in which each bottle is enclosed, is alone
worth the money.
The affinity between the membranes which con
stitute the skin, and the hair which draws its sus
tenance from this triple envelope is very close.—
Ail diseases of the hair originate in the skin of the
head. If the pores of the sea p are clogged, or if
the blood and other fluids do not circulate freely
through the small vessels which feed the root with
moisture, and impart to the fibres, the result is
scurf, dandruff', shedding of the hair, graveness,
dryness and harshness ol the ligaments, and entire
baldness, as the case may be. Stimulate t'.e skin
to healthful action with the Tricopherous, and the
toipid vessels, recovering their activity, will anni
hilate the disease. In ail affections of the skin,
and of the substrata of muscles and integuments,
the process and the effect are the same. It is
upon the skin, the muscular fibre, and the glands,
that the Tricopherous has its specific action, and
in all affections and injury of these organs, it is a
sovereign remedy.
Sold, in large bottles, price 25 cents, at the prin

Mr. J. E Marshall,—Dear t-ir: In compli
ance w th your request, I make this simple state
ment of facts. My boy Daniel stuck a t horn in
his foot about the first of last June, the thorn was
extracted, and no more thought of it for 15 or 20
days, his foot then btgan to swell, and in a tew
days it was opened. It discharged a large quanti
ty of matter. The discharge continued for eight
days, and then ceased His foot then re com
menced swelling and extended up his leg., thigh,
and hip, with violent pain. He then began to spit
from his lungs matter similar to that discharged
from the abscess on his loot. I then called in me
dical aid, and from the remedies used, he was all
ternately better and worse for eight or ten weeks.
During this time a large abscess termed upon the
hip, the discharge was large, and as soon as it
ceased, a general swelling ot his leg, thigh and
breast commenced, which was very hard to the
touch, and at times expeiienced much difficulty
in swallowing. Medical aid seemed of no further
avail, and was discontinued. I then had recourse
to your “Magical Pain Eradicator.” In forty
eight hours, from the time I commenced its use,
his foot began to soften ; the swelling on his hip
and breast subsided and I am pleased to say he is
now well.
I again used your remedy in a case of Nueial
gia, with great success, giving irmediate relief.
I have tried it also for Tooth-Ache, with my
youngest child, with entire success.
From the success I have bad in the use of your
“ Magical Pain Eradicator,” 1 have no hesitation
in recommending it to the public.
Yours truly, W. W. HUGHES.
The above statements of the use of “Marshall's
Magical Pain Eradicator” are kuown by me to be
true.

NORTH AMERICAN
ELECTRIC WASHING FLUID,
For washing in hard or soft water.
rriHis is the only genuine article to be found I
I in the world ; and possesses double the pow
er of any thing ever discovered for washing
clothes, at a trifling expense, doing away with
wash boards at once. In fact, it seems to be the
long sought Phi osopher's Stone, or universal sol
vent ; set ning a magical preparation, its opera
tion being of the most astonishing character. A
common sized washmg may be done with one gill
of this Fii.d, in less than two hours. It softens
and removes the dirt, leaving the articles of the
most brilliant whiteness. It being as harmless in
its operations as pure water, and clothing will
wear mueh longer than when tubbed to pieces by
the common method of washing.
This Fluid is a powerful agent, to be used in all
cases where soap is required, particular'y for
cleansing milk utensils, cleaning windows and
paint, scouring floors ; in short, it is beyond a pre
cedent, as its use is universal in the washing world.

The great celebrity wbicn it has already acquired,
not only in »he old, but in the new world—the ex

Ihe sales throughout every city, town and vil
lage in the United States, are without a parallel!
A circumstance not surprising, when the va9t
amount of human suffering relieved by its use is
considered. In Spinal Defects, the benefit usual
ly is of the most decided charf'cter. In Nervous
Complaints, nineteen cases out of twenty readily
yield to the penetrating stimula combined in this
valuable preparation.
In Rheumatism, either acute or chronic, the
claims of the Hebrew Plaster have long since
been universally acknowledged. Those who are
aboting under weak backs, no matter from what
cause the weakness may have originated—even if
such persons have been mi.-guided in previous ap
plications—in the use o. the Hebiew Plaster they
will find the affected part suddenly restored to its
original soundness.
As a supporter in cases ol constitutional weak
ness it will be found ot great advantage. It is
particularly recommended to Females who are
suffering Irom sudden weakness, r: general debili
