Reported for the Constitutionalist,
Charleston, Feb. 19, P. M.
Cotton— The market continues in a very
depressed condition, and prices are in favor of
buyers. The sales to-day reach 800 bales—
extremes 9 to 12J cents.
New-York, Feb. 18, P. M.
Cotton. —The market is unchanged.
The steamer Pacific, from New-Orleans, ar
rived to-day.
The fugitive slave, Shadrach Williams, was
arrested in Boston on Friday, but was subse
quently rescued from the Marshal ia Court,
by a mob of negroes and whites. Several ne
groes were arrested and held to bail.
The House of Representatives, to-day, a
dopted a substitute for therßiver and Harbor
Bill, which is nearly the same as the bill re
ported last year, and passed it—yeas 104,
nays 87.
New York Trade and Money Matters.
The Dry Goods Trade has assumed a state of
considerable activity, and more so in foreign
than in domestic goods. Stocks are fair with
out excess, prices are firm with much buoy
ancy and the demand is wholly for distribu
tion and consumption, there being no symp
toms of speculation apparent, and jobbers are
operating so as to check, if possible, the up
ward tendency. Shipments to California con
tinue active. Unbleached Shirtings and Sheet
ings are in steady but yet limited demand for
the season, with great firmness in price.—
Bleached goods are in moderate and increas
ing request at full prices, with, some tendency
to advance. Drills are in request at steady
prices. Osnaburgs are much wanted, but are
scarce. Denims are in fair inquiry and steady
in prices. Stripes are in moderate demand
and firm. Ticks are firm with increased ac
tivity. Printing cloths are very firm with a
fair but not active business. In this branch
as in others, dealers delay thet purchases as
long as possible to prevent any advance in
prices. Prints are active at firm rates. Gin
gnams, with a slight stock, are steady in price
and meet a fair demand. Lawns are in good
assortment and supply, and command full
prices for a demand yet moderate since the
recent public sale. Cotton Pantaloonerv is
in demand and firm; the stock is limited.
Muslin de Laines are in request for the Sou Eh,
and the supply is ample at steady prices.
Cloths are buoyant and stocks are moderate,
enabling holders to be firm at their advanced
prices. Casimeres are in demand with a
very light stock; fancy mixtures and plaids
are very active and at full prices. Satinets
are in good supply and in active demand at
ste dy prices. Sheep’s Grays are moderately
active, with a scarcity of the better qualities.
British Goods are active. Cottons, Woolens,
and Linens, are selling briskly at steady prices.
The importations show a fair per ccntage of
increase on last year, but meet a good demand.
French Silks and Fancy Goods are active and
buoyant in price, with a large demand in
prospective. But in ail foreign Dry Goods
there appears by the Canada’s advices to be a
falling off in the shipments to the States ; if
so, the bulk of importations are therefore here.
The value of the imports taken lor consump
tion last month is about $9,250,000 against
$7,250,000 in'Jan. 1850, which is a considera
ble increase, and one greater than was expect
ed : but it is not so great as it appears to be
for two reasons : one, of the increased cost of
goods this year over last, so that the same
quantities are represented by higher amounts,
and secondly, that the January imports in
clude what in part were expected to arrive in
December, so that the comparison should be
instituted tor two months, December and Jan
uary, in each year.
The auction sales are active, and realize
prices very satisfactory to the owners.
Exchange is in firm demand for the steamer
at 9| alO percent. Francs, 5 12£. The sup
ply of Bills is good.
Freights are steady but not active. Cotton,
l a 3-16 d ; Flour, 9d.; Dead weight, 12s. 6d.
a 155.; Rosin, 9J., with small engagements.
The receipts at the Sub-Treasury to-dav
are $43,060 ; Payments s*> 45 j. ijuiunce
$4, ■684,273.
The imports at this port in January show a
considerable increase over the same month of
last year. The figures are annexed :

Hr BLISS’S COMPOUND COD LIVER
OIL CANDY—The first action of this Candy is
to sooih the organs of voice, and finally to allay
all pulmonary irritation. It certainly stands unri
valled as a remedy for ail affections of the throat
and chest, and, unlike many other remed es for
the same diseases, it does not disagree with the
stomach of the patient. We have never uspd any
remedy that is so powerful, and at the same time
palatable to the taste, and we say this, having ful
ly tested the Candy. We would earnestly en
treat ou' - friends suffering under colds, to purchase
this Candy. Call for Biiss’s Compound Cod Liver
