Let Massachusetts abrogate it at once and
pronounce it a nullity. Let her go out of the
Union, unless she chooses to conform to the
laws. The laws would only derive their au
thority from assent —the government had
none but moral strength. He did not wish to
see the military power of the country exerted
io crush a State, for its disobedience of the
laws.
Mr. Foote related a conservation with the
President on this subject. The President had
deolared that he would use the most prompt
and vigorous measures to sustain the law. —
The Cabinet have had a consultation on the
subject, and orders have been given for the
employment of military force, in aid of the
civil authority, if necessary. It appears that
when a riot was apprehended in Philadelphia,
upon the occasion of the arrest of a fugitive a
short time ago, the President gave orders for
holding in readiness a large military force.
If the reply of the President to Mr. Clay’s
call, should come in to-day, there will proba
bly be another discussion.
The Senate took up the postage bill, and re
jected the amendment providing tor the rate of
two cents pre-paid.
Preaching to the Point. —Passing along
one Wednesday night—for evening at the
South is our afternoon —in Montgomery, Ala
bama, I stepped into the Presbyterian lecture
room, where a slave was preaching :
‘My Bredren,* says he, ‘God bless your
souls, ’iigion is like de Alabama river, in
spring comes fresh, an’ bring in all de ole logs,
slabs an' sticks, dat hab been lying' on the
bank, an’ carrying dem down in de current.—
Bymeby de water go down—den a log cotch
here on his island, den a slab gits cotched on
de shore, and de sticks on de bushes—and dare
dey lie, with’rin', and dyin’ till comes 'noeh
er fresh. Jus’ so dare come 'vival of 'ligion—
dis ole 6inner bro't in, dat ole backsl der bro’t
back, and all de folk seem cornin’, an’ mighty
good times. But, bredren, God bless your
souls; bymeby ’vival’s gone—den dis ole sin
ner is stuck on his ole sin, den dat ole back
slider is cotched where he was afore, on jus’
such a rock; den one arter ’nother dat had
got ’ligion lies all long de shore, an’ dare dey
lie till 'nother 'viral. Beloved bredren, God
bless your souls, keep in de current !'
I thought his illustrations beautiful enough
for ' more elegant dress, and too true, alas ! of
others than his own race.— Chari's. Herald.
The London correspondent of the National
Intelligencer says:
••Lord Eosse is said to have made surpris
ing dLcoveries with his mamoth telescope,
and some of them in direct opposition to
Newtonian philosophy. We have lately met
with an old book which relates that Alexander
Neckham, who was born in 1157 and died in
1217, Btated that the reason why the walls of
the Anglo-Saxon castles have often an out
ward inclination was on account of every hea
vy body tending to a centre, and that there
fore build ngs erected on the earth’s surface
ought to represent a continuation of the radii
of the earth. Now, without saying a word
respecting the correctness of the writer's de
ductions, it certainly appears to be a fact from
the extract, that the principle of every heavy
body tending to a centre, or, in other words,
the Newtonian principal of gravitation was
known to Englishmen of science full five hun
dred years before it was taught by Sir Isaac
Newton. We are tempted to join with Solo
mon, and say, that there is nothing new un
der the sun.”

ITT BLISS’S COMPOUND COD LIVER
OIL CANDi l’he first action of this Candy is
to sooth the organs of voice, and finally to allay
ail pulmonary irritation. It certainly stands unri
valled as a remedy lor ail affections of the throat
and chest, and, unlike many other remedies for
the same diseases, it does not disagree with the
stomach of the patient. We have never used any
remedy that is so powerful, and at the same time
palatable to the taste, and we say this, having ful
ly tested the Candy. We would earnestly en
